Our friend Ben Strain died today. Apparently a medical emergency of some type while driving. His son Dave asked me to notify his many motorcycle buddies. I have no other details yet.

In shock, I called the farm. A nice lady I did not know answered in a quiet voice that said it all. frown
Terrible news. Condolences and love to Miss Peggy and the Strain family on this dark day.

My heart is filled with sadness

and secret tears will flow

What it means to lose you

No one will ever know

Since you'll never be forgotten

I pledge to you today

A hallowed place within my heart is where you'll always stay

In memory of my friend and hero

May you rest in peace

Thanks for letting us know, Bill. Thoughts go out to Peggy and the rest of his family.
A real gentleman, so reminds me of my grandfather. Don't know his age, but must have been pushing 8 decades, and still loved to ride the old bikes and hang around with the young uns. He will leave a mark on all that knew him.

I really wish this was not true..... As many great memories as I have, I was looking forward to many many more. I enjoyed every conversation I ever had with Ben. He was a wise and great man .....

I died as mineral and became a plant,
I died as plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was human,

Why should I fear?
When was I less by dying?

Yet once more I shall die human,
To soar with angels blessed above.
And when I sacrifice my angel soul
I shall become what no mind ever conceived.
As a human, I will die once more.
Reborn, I will with the angels soar.

And when I let my angel body go,
I shall be more than mortal mind can know.

I have so many memories of Ben and Peggy, he was one of the first bb.c's I met in 2003 and even had the honor of being a guest in their house.

The highest praise we can give some one like him is to say "He was one of the good ones."

Ben was one of the best, a gentleman, a friend, a mentor .... I think he would have been 80 this year, but he was doing everything he wanted to do, on his terms, right up to the last minute.

Hard to believe the number of things he had done and the amount of work, and play, that he accomplished in his life. Soldier, dairy farmer, horseman, vintage bike and car enthusiast, caregiver, friend to everyone, it's a huge list.

I'll think of him every time I throw a leg over one of my Britbikes ....

Don't have words for this. One of the first I met at the OVBSA club. He encouraged me to join this great web site of Morgan's. Glad I did. I will miss him.

Of the many dear friends I have made on Britbike, Ben was the one I was closest to. He was like an uncle to me.

I will miss our meals together at Mid Ohio and the Three State.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I will miss riding in his truck listening to his stories of being a dairy farmer, dealing with his elderly father, how to drive a Model T Ford, and his road trips when he was in the army. All told with a bluegrass CD being played in the background and dear Peggy sitting in the back seat.

[Linked Image]

I will miss his singing and guitar playing - we would play at Mid Ohio every year in the evening and at the Three State when I could attend. He would bring his old banjo for me to play. He loved traditional bluegrass and had a wonderful voice.

RIP Ben, you were the best.

Back on the mainland!
Thanks for posting this sad and difficult news, Bill.

Met him at my first TSMR and he was a kind and generous man to a fault (not to mention a helluva musician!). Just reading these comments and looking at the photos tells the story.

My deepest sympathies to Peggy and the rest of the family. My condolences to all of you who have lost a close friend.

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” ― Shannon L. Alder

Keep the good memories close,

Sad news indeed. Another empty seat at Mid Ohio. Tarvin, Bonzo, now Ben. We must remember to cherish the times we can get together. There are so many wonderful people we have met through Britbike. Sadly, we and the hobby in general, are not getting younger. I hope when I go I can go like Ben. Godspeed Ben.

Oh NO...Not Ben.... frown

Not one of the best, Ben was THE best, first met him at Brimfield MA. And we were friends from the get go, me and him were always the first up of a morning. Always remember chatting with him in the Lannis homestead over coffee, never did ask how he lost that finger...?

God speed old friend, thank you for the great times... bigt

Me and Janette are thinking about Peggy & family at this sad time... frown

Only meet Ben once at the Inter Rally in Petaluma in 2014. When I mentioned on here that I thought it would be fun to try to come out to the York Meet one year he invited me to meet him and Bill and ride along with them to the show. I barely knew him but feel a great loss. My heartfelt feelings go out to his wife, family and friends. Tip a cow hiya.

had the big pleasure to meet him in 2014 on our way through the states and at the three state mountain ride after the International BSA Rally in California.

I didn't know the man, but he seems to have affected many of you fellows in a very positive manner, and that pretty much sums it how he's referred to as "one of the good guys".

What was his bb.com username?

Sorry to hear the sad news.

He was "Greenspring Farm", and "affected ... in a positive manner" was the story of his life. He was ALWAYS a positive influence.

No Name Man and Ben and I were hanging out in our motel room at York this past January, just talking about stuff. We got into a heavy political and sociological discussion, in which it soon became obvious that Ben and I had diametrically opposite beliefs. We talked it all out, both said everything we wanted to say, shook hands, and went on to talk about something else. He was just that kind of guy. Wise about SO many things about life! I'm really going to miss him; he never missed a gathering of Britbikers ...

Ben, AKA GreenSpringFarm, is the purest, nicest, sweetest person I may have ever known. And I mean that straight from the heart for all time and not just in the emotional moment glow of this current state of shock. He's genuine in the deepest, realest sense that the word conjures.

I'm just looking thru my photos- what an emotional ride this is... Weird but so far I can't find all that many photos of him! I mean to put that in context, I have a few thousand pics to sort thru in photo albums at photo bucket and at zenfolio. And more in my external hard drive!

Alas I can never find the right words at times such as this.

There are acquaintances and there are friends, there are good friends and to quote Mistress Peggy there are friends for life and Ben is one.

In his own quiet, unassuming way Ben was the friend who encouraged us to do things we never dreamt of, helped us along in many ways and ……… and ..….
It is just eleven years that Ben and Peggy have been a part of our lives.
The last thing we ever expected was for our friendship with Ben to end in such a way

Our thoughts and prayers are with Peggy, sons Dave & Rob, daughter Beth and their children

I've only gotten to know Ben through you gents' touching posts. I'm all the more saddened by not having the opportunity to have met him. To each of you and family, prayers for you all, Godspeed to Ben.

Lannis is correct. Obit in the Observer Reporter after 4 AM.
Viewing hours Sunday from 4-8 and Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 at Lee and Martin Funeral Home. 73 Highland Ave, Burgettstown PA.
Funeral Tuesday 11 AM at Paris Presbyterian Church. Same town. Luncheon following.

Ben's son Dave would like to know if any of us could ride bikes in the procession to the cemetery. I would be willing. Anyone else? That would be (correction) Tuesday after the luncheon. About 1/2 hour away.

I've only met Ben twice - the two times I attended the TSMR - and had the privilege of a half an hour alone with him at the 2015 gathering. I came away thinking: now here is one of the nicest men I have ever met in my life - I hope he considers me as one of his friends as that is certainly what I consider him. I was thinking that one of the worst parts about missing this year's ride is losing the chance of chatting with him again. Now I will miss that chance forever and it is very saddening. Can't imagine how his family feels. My most heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends.

I don't quite know how to say what I'm thinking. In the last two months I've had to deal with so much of this kind of thing. Ben was a hero to me.I'm just numb

I'm devastated to hear this, Ben was such a sweet and caring person. My heart goes out to Peggy and their family. After 17 years of the Three State Ride you guys are like family to us and losing any of you is like losing a part of our own family. This coming weekend won't be the same without Ben and Peggy. I'll miss seeing Peggy taking photos throughout the weekend and hearing Ben playing music in the gazebo.

I run into so many people who think it is all about the motorcycles, but we know differently. The people I have met through motorcycles mean more to me than any motorcycle. I only met Ben in passing. Not a friend in a Worldly sense, but I still consider his passing a loss to my greater family that I share mutual interests. Ben truly touched his many friends in a very special way...God Speed

Darn the Angels have gathered another friend.

Best to brush them off so as to not spoil the fun too soon.

But if they must.

Handle with care.
Gently lift him thus.
Many miles and friends
where that one came from
who have nothing
but fondest memories
and tears.
Handle with care.

I can't really add anything that hasn't been said. I am truly shaken to my core. Ben did things for so many of us without hesitation or expectation. He endeared himself in our lives in a way we can only hope that we have to others ourselves. But I fear I will never approach being the gentleman, the giver or friend he was. I regret I can never tell him that.

I'll be about 100 miles away from Blowing Rock this weekend, damned schedule conflicts, but I will raise a glass.
I did so enjoy the pickin' under the gazebo at my one time at the TSMR.

Ben was a big fan of bluegrass great Don Stover.

This song is for Ben:

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/Mxbiu2AuX0Y[/video]

Things in Life

Look up, look down this lonesome road
Hang down your head and cry
For we often lose some things in life
That makes us wonder why

Oh the fairest love I ever had
Now sleeps beneath the clay
I live in hopes and dreams of her
That we’ll meet again someday

I often sit and wonder why
Life has to be this way
But after all is said and done
I’m sure God has his say

I’d like to be a small part of life
With some few things to achieve
Just to know I’ve been a fruitless cause
Would give my poor heart grief

Now when they lower my casket down
In some lonesome grave to rest
And you take your last look at my face
You can say I done my best

Oh, this is so sad to hear. Ben was such a great person and he will be missed so much.
Our thoughts goes to his family. Rest in peace Ben!
I'm enclosing a few photos from 2003 the first year we met in person.

Wow, Morgan, that picture under the banner is probably unique - I don't know of another event, place, or time when Bonzo, Tarvin, Ben, and BritBodger would have all been in the same picture.

Lots of memories there.

I own the photo under the banner and I consider it one of my treasures. In one of the other photos you can just make out my dad........the only time he made the trip to Mid Ohio with me....he's another empty chair now too.

I'm headed out this afternoon and will bring a bike......PLEASE if you can........come ride with us in Ben's Honor. I can't think of a more appropriate way for us to honor this wonderful man. He gave us something to remember.....lets show his other family how much that meant to us.

Mr Healy's post is so spot on......and I thank him for it.

Consider it........please.

I don't know what happened but somehow the post about the procession got "un-edited". I mistakenly had typed Monday. 3 minutes or so later I noticed and edited it to Tuesday. before I did that though, Lannis had noticed and posted a question. I replied saying I screwed up. the next day those two replies were gone and I didn't see that the error had returned! Not important, just weird. As long as everyone knows the procession is Tuesday following the luncheon. Sorry for the confusion.

I know you'd be there if you could brother.

Folks, it's sorta short notice but if there is ANYWAY you can come ride with us PLEASE do. You didn't have to personally know Ben to be welcomed into this family. Come introduce yourself, you'll not regret it. For those of you that know this group.......you know where this is coming from and please do what you can to add a bike to the honor line. It won't matter what you're riding, just ride.

This is much harder than I expected.....I'm not sure how I'll hold up once I see all your faces again....we've been through a lot together and Ben was there through most of it. It was tough enough talking to Mike Baker this weekend about it. Having you guys together is going to be wonderful but tough too.

Come join us......please. If there is anything I can do to help make that happen just contact me at 336-977-3658 or dad1150@aol.com. We could probably come up with a bike or two if need be.

Thanks to all who have expressed the emotions, sense of loss and appreciation for having know Ben much more eloquently than I ever could. Heading out soon for Burgettstown and bringing a BSA for the procession. Can't say I've ever gone off for a gathering with as heavy a heart as this one. God speed Ben.

Like others who knew Ben... I am not finding the words, but what I can easily say is that Ben was a true, genuine, and kind hearted gentleman.

He will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him, and those who didn't will no doubt wish they had the pleasure of knowing Ben..

Ben was just that kind of person.

Wish I could make the service... my heart will be in SW PA tomorrow.

Jim.

Shaun...
Today is a sad day. Between all the elements of the event this afternoon .... and from what I gather concerning the turn out this weekend... well let's just say that there's a whole lot of real nice folks who feel the same about our friend Mr Ben as we do.

I turn, once again to Rumi, who is rumored to have written:

We all have a limited amount of time in this realm, Judging by the amount of lives Ben affected in a positive manner, Ben didn't waste his

Tom was there and took a lot of photos that I'm sure he'll share soon.

We had the honor of following Mr Ben's Triumph which was on a trailer and being hauled by one of his sons.....the truck and trailer were right behind the vehicle Ms Peggy was riding in which was right behind Mr Ben. I can't put into words what an honor that was.

This is what it looked like from my view

[Linked Image]

It took us a better part of an hour to arrive at the cemetery. The whole way all I could think about was how many miles I'd ridden behind Mr Ben......I think we were all thinking about that.

Sorry for the fuzzy photo but this is Rich and Tim behind me. Out front was Bill Edwards, Don Roe and Lannis.

[Linked Image]

When we made the turn into the national cemetery it was a pretty powerful view that I'm sure Tom has captured and will share.

Goodbye Mr Ben, thank you for the friendship...... you'll not be forgotten.

I got a phone message from Ben's brother Ken last night thanking us for being there. He also told me that they had another brother in the same cemetery, just over the hill from where we were. It was very moving to see all those white headstones and to think that Ben was getting ready to join them.

There were 6 riders and 2 that made the trip without bikes. To be honest, there wasn't a lot more room left at the church and the way it worked out was fine.

I figure each rider was carring the thoughts and best wishes from at least 10 of you.......so we actually had 60+ riders out there in spirit.

The family kept thanking us.......we were the ones who were thankful. Beautiful ceremony, beautiful family, beautiful country you wouldn't have expeced any less.

It's a day I don't want to do over again....but I have no regrets. Mr Ben's Triumph on the trailer with his boots and helmet was very touching and I'm sure Tom will share some photos of that.

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it......thanks to Bill Edwards for putting it together.

Thanks to Ben Strain for being the man he was.

Going thru my. photos now...
I will post a few here as I get them sorted, but I must say that I honestly feel like I need to show them to Peggy, or send a set to her... before showing them to the whole world on the internet. Some photos I definitely will not post. Just too personal. Call me old fashioned, guys. I'm really sort of struggling with this... maybe it's the emotion of the moment or something but I feel like it's a matter of respect for the family... Like I need their permission to post photos of their family event....

For once I am struggling to find the right words... doesn't happen often, I know.

BUT meanwhile, for those who never attended a full-honors Military funeral, the significance of the riderless horse with the empty boots in the stirrups may be lost on you, but Ben's riderless Daytona, with his boots turned bacwards on the pegs... it was a deep and thoughtful touch that says a whole lot, not only about Mr Ben Strain, but about the family he's raised; who these people truly are. Having been through 2 full military funeral services, one for my grandfather & one for my father...
the image of the riderless bike with Ben's own boots on the pegs backwards... is etched straight into my heart. I'll not forget it.

[Linked Image]

Look closely at this image and you'll see that the flag in the background is flying at half staff. I noticed this straight away as we puled into this rural National Cemetery. I looked around on the 'net last night. Turns out the PA Governor ordered flags at half staff statewide in honor of a well loved fire chief who lost his life in the line of duty recently!

Far as I'm concerned the flag was flying low in honor of Ben.

I think there are a good bunch of folks representing BritBike forum in this picture. Mainly old members which Ben also was/is.
We all wish we could have been there but you guys did it in person. Well done. A sad event but something good came out of it.
Our old member John Blue re-joined us for this occasion. Anki's message to everyone out there is that LOVE is GREATER than everything!
She said this today on our 31th anniversary.
Ride safe and god speed!

A fine tribute indeed, you all did Ben proud.

I'm glad I had to opportunity to meet and talk briefly with Ben at the 2014 International. His caricature grin was so prominent I recognized him instantly .
We spoke of his life, the bikes and the trip he commandeered with the others across America to arrive in Petaluma.
Honored to have met him and shook his hand. Truly a good man.

For decades I'd followed the East Coast goings on with much enjoyment.
Greenspring Farm, the indentured servitude of Bryan and Marie.
Pickin' and grinning in the rain on a porch or Gazebo. Ben was always there.

Thanks for all the thoughts and updates and a special thanks to those that attended the services representing the Brit Bike Family.
In a sense I guess were all following Ben down that same road.

Thanks to Ben's family for arranging such a fitting celebration and remembrance of Ben's life and the things we all did together! clap

Thanks to No Name Man for bringing his bikes so we'd all have something to ride in the procession in honor of Ben. bigt

One interesting note .... as we were returning to the church, Bill suddenly pulled over to the shoulder on his B50 just on the US22 overpass. The AMAL float bowl drain plug had fallen out of the bowl as he rode, and of course the bike cuts off and gasoline sluicing everywhere. mad The guys walked the road back and actually FOUND that little brass plug on the highway, and Bill borrowed a penny to use as a screwdriver, put it back and we were on our way. 2c beerchug

I joked to Gordon that if it had been my drain plug on a regular ride, it would have bounced over the rail into the eastbound lane of US22. Gordon responded that if it had been HIS drain plug, it would be caught in the tread of an eastbound semi headed for Philadelphia, going away from us at 60 MPH. blush

I think maybe Ben may have gently stopped that plug, and pointed the boys in the right direction to find that thing .... wink

We'll never forget him.

Lannis

Still going thru photos... obviously there are at least a handful I feel OK about posting, so here's another. This is us at breakfast... Bill seemed in a hurry to get to the restaurant, to eat before the funeral... what he DIDN'T tell us was that a half hour later, LUNCH would be served! Think that boy's got a darn tape worm in his belly that consumes at least half what he puts in there! laughing

from L-R it's Gordon, Fay, Don, RichB, myself, Lannis, Bill, & Wade

Just a short while ago I was talking with Ben's son Dave and later with Peggy.
At the end of the chat with Dave he asked if I could do something for him ....... to go to BritBike and thank everyone here for their kindness, their support, the photos from past times and with special thanks to the folks who rode along with Ben on his last road trip.

Bryan, I know this was hard on you and Marie. You two have a special bond with Mr Ben and Ms Peggy. To the point where watching you four together was like watching two sets of twins.

I'm down to two motorcycling heroes now.....

[Linked Image]

Hope you two get to visit with Ms Peggy soon....please take care of yourself and give Marie a BIG hug from me.

OK adding a couple more photos here...

Ben was (as you know) big into bluegrass. He was an accomplished musician and avid fan of the style. I'd seen him and his local SW PA musician friends playing on several occasions, and it was no surprise to find them set up to play in the church basement hall during dinner.

[Linked Image]

Ben was also a car nut, and has a couple old cars which he and Peggy would drive around, to attend various regional and local meets. Also no surprise to see an old car in the church lot.

This gentleman came wheeling in on his well loved and hard ridden Beemer. Said it has I believe a MILLION miles on it? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here. PLEASE.

The guy didn't ride with everyone over to the graveyard, and I didn't get to talk to him at all, really. Seemed like an interesting guy tho!

Lastly but not leastly, here is Gordon's lovely blue BSA reflected in the oh-so-shiny chrome of Tim's motor:

Now that is a GREAT photo.

Yes sir, it's me. I couldn't turn my back on this thread.

Oh my......I remember Ms Peggy and Marie cooking pancakes on the grill at the campground.....one of my fondest motorcycling/Britbike.com memories.

Even though I never saw Ms Peggy ride a motorcycle....I realize she's one of my heroes too.

AND.....you sir are every bit the wonderful man Mr Ben was......you two were SO much alike. He was very proud to call you his friend.

My heart goes out to both of you during these tough times.

Just learned of this sad news.
Not much I can say that already hasn't been said about this fine man.
I always looked forward to visiting with Ben and Peggy when I could make it down to the BSA rallies or Mid Ohio. Sometimes bring them a bottle or two of home made wine for them to enjoy back home. I always liked to talk with Ben but I loved to listen even more. Funny how powerfull those softly spoken messages were. Made me lean in and tilt an ear so as not to miss a single word. Going to miss that.

This year's ride will not be the same. I enjoyed Ben and his wife very much and was looking forward to seeing them again. His guitar added to the evening. A toast to Ben at this year's TSMR is in order.

I talked to him Lannis. My dad had told me about his bike before. He had 494,000 on the odometer. Close enough to a half million for me. BMW should buy that bike back and replace it. That is awesome.

Guys,

I really want to thank you all for the kind words, the photos, those that rode in my dad's procession. I've met a few of you before like Tom, Lannis, Gordon, Allan, Bill, and Mike Carter. I can't say enough what this all means. I.going to try and pay attention on here, because I would really like to attend the one state mountain ride this fall. My dad loved you guys.

Rob,

This is Gordon ( I don't want to try to explain the John Blue thing) . There are no words to express how much we loved your dad. (and Mom) If either one of them were around.....everything was going to be alright. We were a family and we're going to miss that.

I also can't tell you how much of an honor it was to be able to ride along with him for his last ride. It's something I will never forget and I thank your family for that honor.

I took some photos I would like to get to you. They were taken out of love and respect. If and when you get a chance, drop me a line at dad1150@aol.com and I'll send them to you.

You attending the One State Ride...........what a wonderful idea and a great way for you to honor your dad. I attended all of them except one and the ONLY reason I would go was because of the people that would be there. Family, friends and heroes........it didn't get much better.

The hole that was left by your dad's passing will be something you'll never get over but I hope in time at least you'll learn to deal with it......it's something your dad would want.

Take care....give your Mom a BIG hug from us........Gordon in NC
