Only to keep them from falling out during assembly. You can wood wedges or rubber tube down the tunnel instead.

Its a lot easier pushing a length of hose over each follower than trying to fiddle the circlips on. when I had an A65 they went straight in t' bin

I just paste them with a small dab of grease or assembly lube which easily washes away. Always worked well for me and easy is a good thing.
