Greetings all,

I'm new to the forum. I ride a Rickman MkIII A65 BSA Metisse purchased from the Kirk F. White collection many years ago.

I now have a new Rickman project: a Rickman Yamaha MkIV Metisse. It's an original unbuilt frame. I have a few challenges putting this together and was wondering if any forum members own one of these or know someone who does. My biggest challenge is fabricating an exhaust system for this machine and trying to come close to what was delivered from the few complete machines sold. I've had no luck finding much in the way of pictures.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!

Best to everyone.

I can't recall ever seeing a Rickman Yamaha. Does it use a 650 twin engine like this one https://motorcyclephotooftheday.com/2008/12/17/rickman-framed-xs650-dirt-bike/ or ...? If it's a 4-stroke, fabricating an exhaust system should be fairly straight-forward, if not particularly easy.

Yep - just like this. I've seen a couple of Metisse with Yamaha 650 engines, but this is a 2-stroke DT1 engine as Andy pointed to. The MkIV frame I have is swiftly coming together. I have three DT1 engines I'm cleaning up to select the best one. I can't imagine finding a Rickman Yamaha expansion chamber for this bike (although manna from heaven is always welcome) so I'm planning to fab one in my shop. I have no idea how the exhaust is routed, mounted, or sized other than what I could discern from the pictures on the AMS website and a poster from the original offering of the bike by Rickman in the late 80s. I know that the exhaust exits through the left size number plate. Another unknown is whether these machines used a stock MkIV Airbox or something custom to work with the exhaust system. All of the glass for this bike is BRG by the way - I believe the assembled bikes were offered in white. Historical information on these machines is very hard to come by, so I'm scrounging around for anything I can find.

The one Andy posted the link to is build 4 of 11 complete bikes in the description which suggests not all were white.

I noticed that too. I found a snippet of news from a long time back suggesting the kits were green and the completed bikes were white, but as you say here are pictures of a original complete bike in BRG. With some help from the UK I was able to obtain the build record on this frame which was an order for Steens. I have an assembly manual for the MkIV frames from Rickman... doesn't even mention these DTs. I'm grateful for the AMS pictures and it's helped me at least get an idea of what I have to build. Right now I've got an engine in the frame and am building a mockup pipe so I have something to go by.

Here's a picture of a Rickman advert for these bikes:

Maybe they still have some of those $89 expansion chambers back in the warehouse...
