I am planning on getting my Bonneville back on the road. I would like to swap out the inner head bolt washers with the larger 82-2184 washers as used on the outer head bolts. I understand this is pretty much a must do item.
I figured while I have the rockers off, it would also be an ideal time to update the head bolts to the later T140 style for ease of torqueing the head in the future. John Healy, I believe mentioned he supplies a kit for this. I have done a search but can not find it anywhere. Does anyone know if such a kit still exists and who sells them?
If not I am figuring updating to the 72 head bolts should do the same thing. I understand I would also have to swap out the rocker bolts to the shouldered version. Thanks in Advance!

I'm not aware of a kit, but it should be easy enough to do. Did they already convert the threads from CEI to UNF in '71?

His business is a wholesale distributor called Coventry Spares. You could call him and see if he still produces the kit. I'm sure he could recommend a dealer in your area and send them one if so.

Yes, both the 1972 bolts and the T140 style studs will require shouldered rocker box bolts and they're different. 5/16" for the 1972 and later 650's and 3/8" for the T140.

The 650's were CEI through the end of production. The kit studs are CEI on one end and UNF on the other. I remember reading the thread about these studs when they first started producing them. The prototypes were early 650 inner head bolts with the heads cut off and the blank ends then threaded UNF.

Thanks, Bike Vice and JubeePrince for the replies.
I will reach out to John Healy to see if the stud kit is still being manufactured.

From John's previous reply on an earlier thread:
'The kit consists of 4 new heat treated head studs - one end threaded CEI and the other UNF; four T140 head nuts and four thicker hardened full size head bolt washers which have provisions for "O" rings. The "O" rings help keep oil from flowing down the head studs. Used with CovSeal rocker box gaskets it solves a lot of issues with the 1971-72 stock set-up'

It seems like a great solution to the problems associated with the original head bolt design.
My bike is very large mileage (>1400)so I am hopeful for a minimal depression, caused by the small washers, but you never know...

Excellent info, Eric, thanks! beerchug

Somehow missed that one, b/c I usually pay close attention when John speaks. When it comes to these old bikes, I trust him explicitly and implicitly.

Those studs sound very much like the original fittings for 1974 T120RVs.
When I restored mine there was nothing like it in the parts books.
Had to use the 72 T120 and 74 T140 and guesstimate the rest.
But certainly all CEI at the bottom and Unified at the top.

I refrain from pushing my parts on this site. We have been supplying this kit (71-2362AK), and individual parts, to dealers for some ten years.

The kit includes the UK made hardened CEI-UNF stud (71-2362A), a thicker hardened washer (82-2184A) which includes a quad viton seal to replace the undersize washers that dent the head, and the factory nuts and rocker box bolt to replace the 1971-1972 ones.

Yes they are still available as kits or as individual parts.

Thanks John H,
As of yet I have only been able to find the washers with seal, 82-2184a. I will try searching for the studs/ kit using the parts number.

I checked in on Moore but it looks like he is out of stock.
I also checked in on some of the other site sponsoring venders but none seem to recognize the part numbers. I have a line on some 72 head bolts which should work well, not as slick as the kit, but along with the larger washers will accomplish my goals.
Thanks all

Check with Mitch Klempf?

I'd call directly instead of perusing the online site....

Hopefully your source has the rocker box bolts as well. I recently had to buy 1. $10.00! I wouldn't want to have to buy 4.
