Amidst those questionable steel and alloy tanks from overseas (the Pacific side) I spotted a jewel...a genuine Lyta tank!...or is it? ...just thought I would mention it in case someone had to have it...I already have mine.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLDSTAR-BSA-PETROL-TANK-/172457760348?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276

Looks like a beaut...some period water slides...one hard to see on the tank top pic if you check it out ..referencing the IOM Clubman wins I think...

Awesome! Some great patina...Needs a good home....

Cheers,
Dave

Hi All,

Lyta or Lyta ?????

The tank in the link has a feature that I was told was unique to original Lyta tanks ?

This one also on eBay does not have the feature and also does not have the relief for the GP carb (for a twin maybe?)

http://www.eBay.co.uk/itm/LYTA-ALLOY-BSA-GOLD-STAR-PETROL-TANK/142226711844?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D38661%26meid%3D6c5da991fdcd4edab1de25db341b7c21%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D222358526624

Spot the difference ??
Hmmmm ????
John

Hmmm...no vent but that could have been an optional item...it is from today's tank manufacturers. The base not symmetrical on the first link, is symmetrical on the second. Probably could have been had without the GP relief for the twin as you say..but don't know.

Too bad the gentleman selling the first one didn't put 'Lyta' in his eBay title - I think it is being missed and is under-priced. I think the second one is overpriced but it sure is getting noticed!

There is no doubt some variations in a given tank over time....too bad they weren't stamped or numbered...although how many BSA gearbox mid covers now sport 'RRT2' that did not originally? (Please...let's not go there...)

Dammit...I am away from home so can't compare my tank...anyone else have a purported original Lyta to compare...?

Cheers,
Dave

Ok, here's a pic of the bottom of the first tank (Tank #1):

And here is the second tank pic...(Tank #2)

Hmmmm....more input required...where would you put your money? I (think I) know where mine would be....but...

Something else to consider...any marking on the gas cap?

I have an original Lyta tank that I bought from the man himself (mr Hichison) in the UK many years ago.
The bottom of the tank has the cutaway for the carburator like the one shown above. However, it does not have the vent tube.

Peter,
Would it be possible to get a pic of the bottom of your tank, since its providence is known....

Cheers,
Dave

Looks to me like the ol' man might have made two different Lyta Goldie tanks. The one I bought - from the man himself - (definitely for a Goldstar) is a slightly different shape in profile, a more shallow slope down at the rear than the pic at the top of this page.
Might he have made different patterns for the Goldie and the A65 I wonder? Or perhaps there are fakes out there.

Possible to get a pic Jools?....straight on side pic and ideally one of the bottom if not a great inconvenience or if it is not currently on a bike.

Here is the side view of the second 'Lyta' - Tank #2 - is that more in keeping what you have?

Update: This tank was on eBay back in Nov....went to 1,271 pounds and didn't meet reserve! Lots of people seem to think it is genuine...

Hmmmm...here is another (we will call this Lyta 3):

Looks a bit different from both, more similar to #2 but knee cutouts appear larger and it appears taller and a bit more rounded...the plot thickens.

These are hand made so probably no two exactly alike and maybe changes to the pattern over time?...but how much variation is to be expected? Is one of these correct?

I for one would like to see one that came from the builders hands...

This came from the builders hands himself. A friend brought it back from the UK in the late '70's and hand carried it all the way. It is yet to be mounted on a machine or have fuel put in it but will be going on my '57 Clubman. Some of the details that indicated a Lyta tank were:

1) The fuel tap bosses were welded to flared out openings in the tank, not just welded straight to it.

There was a cutout, like Peter referred to for clearance of the throttle cable.

And there should be pads welded to the inside of the tunnel to snug the tank to the antisway rubber pads on the frame.

I also thought the big tanks all had the vents but maybe Peter's was requested to be left off.

OK, so I took the tank off the bike and made some pics, as said, it has no vent tube, and I do not recall that this was requested or even discussed at the time.

I first laid eyes on a Lyta tank in the shop of Eddy Dow in Banbury around 1973,actually a Renault car dealer with the Goldstar department on the top floor, they had a Goldie on display with a Lyta tank and they supplied me withe the name and adress of the maker. Mind you, Goldies were just no more than old bikes in those days, and I wondered if the purchase of a Lyta tank was a wise investment, but I bit the bullet and ordered one. It arrived at my home a few weeks later.
I can't remember anymore how much I payed for the tank, but it was (at the time) quite a substantial sum.
The original Lyta sticker got damaged, and I removed the remains long ago. (stupid me)
I also made brass adapters to accomodate fuel taps with 1/4BSP thread.

Great! Many thanks Peter and Boomer for your pics. And the fact that they both can be traced back as original is awesome. From them we can see some must-haves to be a genuine Lyta:
- flared out at fuel tap bosses
- non symmetrical reservoirs on the bottom
- re-enforced at the front for rubber mounts
- cut-out for cable for GP carb cable (at least for GS single)

The shape of both of these is the same. Interesting that the first tank in the thread has all the above criteria but appears to be a different shape...was there a 4 gal Lyta? I suppose if you were getting a custom tank you could request a GS base and change the top portion?

Tank #2 on eBay uk does not meet the above criteria...hmmm.

Great stuff. I'm on my way home tomorrow and a little concerned about flipping over my 'genuine' Lyta to see what it will reveal....

Did anyone check to see if the fuel lid had any markings/brand name?

Cheers,
Dave

The Lyta decal on mine is a waterslide. It came with the tank and I put it on when I got the tank. On close inspection you can see a slight crack through it where it has dried out.

The BSA on Peter's is seen on several BSA tanks and maybe Peter can tell us if it came with it or he added it. It looks similar to the one used on Victor alloy tanks. I believe I have seen it on this tank before.

The only markings I could find on the inside of the lid were:
ENOTS.BHAM ENGLAND

The tank did not come with de decals,I applied these myself, I got them in london from Pride&Clark many years ago.

I bought one from the man himself about 85 or 86 and hand carried it all the way back to California. One thing I noticed was the very good welding. I think he was gas welding these where the modern knock offs would be tig. In appearance the Lyta is nicer than the new ones. I tried it on my CB and to me it looked too big and out of proportion to the rest of the bike. It looked much better on an A-10.

For what it's worth my Lyta tank came with my original Gold Star, so is at least 20 years old, and passes the genuine Gold Star Lyta tank tests mentioned by others in this thread. The brass plate inside the fuel cap that holds the gasket is stamped:

ENOTS
MADE IN ENGLAND

180-degrees from that on the same plate is stamped:

BENTON & STONE LTD.
BIRMINGHAM

The ID of the fuel inlet tube is 2-1/8".

The tank also has a vent tube as well as a 'LYTA' waterslide decal, but I have no way of knowing when the decal was attached to the tank.

My lyta tank has an alloy QA filler cap of the same style as chrome caps on Goldies, a wing nut to tighten and split pin to hinge it to the tank. There is no cut out for the cable but it's location has been carefully marked on the alloy with a scribe. The tank was believed by former owner to have come from a Daytona goldie prepared by factory but no evidence to back this up. It's had very little use by marks on it, has reinforcements where the rubber pads fit in the frame but is not flared at base of the tap weld. Both cut outs on base are the same shape.

Inside the cap is stamped Westwood P PAT 9752/53. Westwood components was early 1900s and taken over by Cycle Components Manufacturing Ltd. It was run by Charles Sangster, father of Jack Sangster. They went bust in early 1930s and Jack Sangster, MD of Ariel, bought all the assets from the receiver. Not had any luck finding details on the patent pending though. Jack Sangster does have a patent on the Goldie forks, mine are stamped with a patent number on the sliders where the top bush is located I think.

Sorry if photo is too big, not quite got photobucket sorted out!

That cap is exactly like the cap used on mid '60's A50/A65 fuel tanks, part number 68-8083.

What do people make of this one?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/gold-star-G-50-velo-manx-vintage-lyta-gas-tank-/182400871141

The not very tidy welding shows marks of being done with a DC tig welder especially around the carb cable cut out. what I think are genuine lyta tanks are gas flame welded aluminium. Also the lack of fuel tap holes seems strange, the usual pressed out flange for them would have to be done before the tank is assembled unless someone forgot! Im not saying its a fake, im saying im not sure about it.
