Anyone have and idea of how many Spitfires Mark II were made. I understand the early ones had GP Carbs so an early number ( what ever that would be ) may say it was equipped with them.
Would the BSA register have that figure and how do I send them a note.

Thanks,
Richard

1965 BSA A65 Lightning Rocket "Clubman" (restored)
1966 BSA A65 Spitfire MK-II (restored)

Frame numbers were shared across the entire range and bikes were made in batches.
Thus 130101 to 130201 could have all been East Coast Spitfires while 130202 to 130666 were all Lightnings followed by .a batch of Thunderbolts 130667 to 130800 then another batch of Spitfires 130801 to 130999, etc etc.
East Coast bikes left the factory first followed by Canada , oft the same spec as US East coast .
West coast followed and if necessary a second batch of East coast.
In the middle of this UK models & Europen/ general export made to sales orders and after all that bikes for Southern Hemisphere countries .
Prior to the 1950 we ( Aust & NZ ) used to get the new season bikes first being our peak selling season is November to Febuary.
Thus the factory could use a protected market to sort out production problems & tweak specs before the Northern higher volume sales but progressively this was reversed so we got last seasons left overs as our new season modles.

True, but 130,000 looks a bit high for the unit twins, even for 1966

According to Koerner's figures(The Strange Death of the British Motorcycle Industry, p 142), Australia was the higher volume market for the industry as a whole up to 1950 by a very wide margin.
There's a big gap (1951-1957) in the numbers, but we went from 22,000 in 1950 to 2,000 in 1958.

I am amazed how cheap these are. a few million will get you a totally rebuilt one.I don't fly or have any interest but a big lottery win would see me buying one of these.
