Hello
Despite lining my new fibre glass Spitfire tank with Caswell sealer and draining it before laying it up it has started to leak on the right hand lower seem. The tank has only ever had about 3 to 4 gallons of petrol (super unleaded so low ethanol) in it and was drained after a quick run up and down the road (Sep 2015). The bike was then stored at my mum's and I've just got it out with the intention of putting it through its first MoT it on Saturday since it was taken off the road many years ago.

The residual in the tank was enough to cause the problem. I'm not impressed with the Caswell sealer; even the bit near the filler (definitely nowhere near any residual fuel in the tank) feels soft and not bonded to the fibre glass underneath.
I might try a different sealer if I can clean the old stuff out but the long term solution will be to get a aluminium tank made I think. Can anyone recommend someone to do it in the UK?

Thanks

CAB

I have done a couple of A10 tanks with POR15, each stage is crucial especially the cleaning and etching stages. When you have emptied all the sealant it is best to leave the tank upside down so any pooling will stay at the top and not get softened by fuel sitting on it

Remove your wallet from the darkness of your pocket then follow This Link.
A few months later you will have a beautiful tank, not affected by fuel and so beautiful you will not want to paint it

WOW, that's beautiful. $1,000 USD plus shipping??? OUCH. I can't afford it, but definitely a work of art.

Works for me. You must take the pint of Guinness out of the link in order for it to be "clickable" so to say.

You gets what you pay for. Lyta tanks always flared out the penetrations in the tank where any boss or fitting was welded. This relieved the stress of the welded joint. The tank center mount that is smooth on this one would have me worried let alone any thing else unseen.

Hello Stuart

I live in Bristol but the bike is kept in Cornwall. I pulled the tank off and rinsed it out to bring it back to work on and a good handful of loose chunks fell out of the tank.....

I have spoken to Holtworks but there is a 30 week wait for the ally tank. It's a bit annoying since the bike now has an MoT and once I get it registered (hopefully with the original number) I was hoping to ride it. Presumably it was taken off the road before 1983 when I think V5C registration documents were introduced.

Plan B is to line a spare Mk 4 Spitfire tank that came with the bike with a different product and then get that painted and remove the ethanol from the fuel with an Ethan-nil kit.

BBB lists both alloy and fibreglass tanks, but all seem to be out of stock for now. The fibreglass tanks are said to be ethanol tested. I know nothing more about them or if/when they will be back in stock.

Hello
The Mk 2 tank that I had the problem with came (new) from Burton's. I'm pretty sure that the tanks aren't 15% ethanol proof.... Mine has only ever had super unleaded which is 5% ethanol as far as I know certainly not more than 10%....
