Thanks for the information! The partnumber 040138 is correct, but when I measure the bolt, the outside thread diameter is 12.55mm. This should be 1/2" (=12.70mm) or 31/64" (=12.30mm). TPI is 20. In the old-britt they refer to 040138 NORTON, Bolt, 3/8 x 20, 1/2", Gearbox Drain Bolt.
So is the bolt I have still the original one?
The bolt has a magnet in the core on top.

1/2" x 20 is UNF, so it looks as if the gearbox drain has already been drilled and tapped oversize.
The original drain plug thread stayed at 3/8" x 20(BSF) right up to the end of production I believe, as my 1975 850 plug is the same, also there is no magnet on it.

The original drain bolts (that I have seen) are distinctive as the flats of the hexagon are slightly thinner than a normal bolt head as the face of the hexagon is machined to a shallow dome shape.

Thanks for the replies, it will be helicoil and I will use an original bolt.
