Well…after the bike warms up I can get in 3rd
after one or two downshifts to neutral…but when cold
it's not happening
Checked the Quadrant for a jammed spring..not that
Could be worn selector button..?..Cam plate…?…Bike is
65 T120 unit...

…Hoping for some suggestions:
What should I be looking for in particular
that would deny an upshift from 2nd to 3rd..and sometimes 3rd to 4th..?
I have to downshift to neutral,in the first case,up to 2nd and try for 3rd
sometimes 6 time before it will finally shift to 3rd…when the bike is warmed up tho
maybe 2 tries will get me 3rd..or first try…but then occasionally 4th won't follow..?
…The usual culprit for shifting problems,in my experience, is just a broken quadrant spring
But all appears well with the springs, pawls..et cet…so..if I have to into the Trani itself
what,in terms of wear, should I examine..[replace] that might cause this problem as described..?
Selectors..buttons..Cam…All have done significant miles and no doubt there's wear..
[ I replaced the main shaft about 2 years ago]…but my experience with spotting wear as trouble
[past spec] is limited..and i'm not sure what bits precisely to suspect…Tho the little experience
I do have in this area..tends to suggest button/cam wear..?…Tips appreciated
Dan

Work in progress:
With the outer cover off again
I discover I can select all gears up an down repeatedly
by activating the Cam arm [using a lever]..
It seems the problem is not 'internal'
but with the shifter Mech. as I'd originally thought
Not the springs binding or broken..or,worn Quad spindle bush..or grooved retainer plate
but looking carefully at the plungers..The top edges are worn..
I'm going to replace these tomorrow
and I'll post back the results…

You may have a binding shift quadrant. The "O" ring is a very thin one but if you install one too thick, you will have shifting problems. The lever will never return to center where it needs to in order to pick up the next tooth...

Cheers,

Bill

Does the gear lever go solid when you can't get 3rd? ..or is it floppy like "nothing is there".?

Pics??

...normally the usual suspects are the gear change plungers.
You can renew the older ones welding on the top and then doing again the shape.

Recap,
..Plungers are worn, each with a small chip at the edge ,
Return springs look good and measure right :
So I go to Rabers and find two clean/used plungers
and a set of springs just in case I was wrong not to see the culprit there as per usual
Back to the garage:
I change the springs, now following my original Suspect
and put the 'questionable' plungers back in the quad..not the 'replacements'
Just to see..Fit the outer case dry..no bolts…and the shifter now works..up
and down ..all gears…Button up..take a ride..All good….
Yeesh….[ It was the springs ]…!!
Thanks All
Dan
