Do you have the proper head gasket for the year bike. The late 500 uses a very thin head gasket. If you you use the earlier thin one you can have this problem.

I had the same thing. Same pushrods used in the same position before I did a top end job, so I knew something was wrong.

Make sure the pushrods are seated properly in the cam follower (use a lot of grease to feel them stick) and use a tool (zip tie, popsicle stick or something) to make sure the rockers sit exactly in the pushrods. I thought I was okay about 3 times before I got it right.

I repeatedly had three out of four valves adjust properly and the fourth be too loose. Best to pull the rocket box up a little bit and try to re-set the pushrods.

What's the big picture Charlie?

Is this a new head, new valves etc. or is it just new adjusters?

Thinking the valve stems might be hanging in the guides or maybe the wrong length.

Out There!
Measure valve heights from spring cup to top of valve stem, they should all be about the same.

Most likely a pushrod came unseated.

When people who should have known better cautioned me about the dangers of motorcycle racing, I always told them that a fear of death is nothing more than a fear of life in disguise.
