Want to Buy: parts for SMITHS ATRC Tach

I have an ATRC tach with innards that someone has brutalized sometime in the past.

While I would buy a whole instrument to get the parts I need, I could get by with only the dial assembly. The dial assembly separates easily from the drive/rear portion when the bezel is un-screwed.

Any and all SMITHS parts considered.

Thanks,
... Gregg

What is a complete ATRC worth?

Are there different models, mine was from a Manx. I don't have the gearbox that was on the cambox.

ie I may have one to sell but tempt me, I had planned to keep it for one of my ...haha, 'projects'....blablabla...etc

pm me if you like.

Hi Bodger,

I think my message notifications are turned off, so I missed your reply. I'll PM separately.

The ATRC as used on the Manx came from a fairly broad range of instruments that Smiths made, and numerous versions were made for many applications. They came also with many different diameter dials and pointers.

The ATRC operates under the same principles as the more common Smiths magnetic instruments, but they feature better internals, making them better for high revving engines (some were made with 20K RPM dials for the early Japanese racers). That said, the mechanism did not abide sustained vibration very well, and a resilient anti-vibe mounting was/is vital.

The one I have here has suffered nasty internal damage some time in the past, although it is fine cosmetically. I need to find a replacement for the internal needle/pointer assembly (or more), in order to make for a viable repair.

Cheers!
...Gregg

Freddie, you have an interesting version of the ATRC: it has a counter-clockwise scale rather than the more usual clockwise reading.

Of the more common bikes, if it has a 2:1 internal ratio, yours would suit a pre-unit Triumph; if 4:1, a Royal Enfield twin.

This tach is very nice, and my need is mainly for ATRC internal parts relating to the common clockwise dial assembly.

Thanks for posting the photo!

still have mine for keeps (sorry)..but could I ask?

How do I tell what the ratio is?

Which direction does the cable have to turn, or are the cables all the same direction (I doubt it.)

Mine from the Manx is 9000 clockwise.

When I install it should I first send it to you for a checkup and see what it might need? Tempting to just bung it on and see if it works but I really would rather not break it if it is that delicate. It has sat boxed up since about 1971.

Thanks, I hope you can find the parts for the one you are fixing..

Hi Bodger,

Thank you for your well wishes, and here are some answers to your questions:

1. How do I tell what the ratio is?
- Most often the ratio is printed on the dial
- If not, you the instrument can be dismantled to count the poles on the internal magnet
- Also, one can derive the ratio by driving the instrument at a known/accurate speed, and observing its indication. I do this at the start of an instrument's calibration runs.

2. Which direction does the cable have to turn, or are the cables all the same direction (I doubt it.)
- No sure I understand the question correctly, but the direction of rotation is set by the way the instrument's head is built.
- The construction of the actual inner cable is woven, and being constrained by welding at both ends, it can rotate in either direction.

3. When I install it should I first send it to you for a checkup and see what it might need? <SNIP> It has sat boxed up since about 1971.
- If your instrument has been sitting for 45 years, I can almost guarantee the lubricant will be perished. Best to send it in and have it serviced first.

Best wishes,
.. >Gregg
