Here we go. A CB34 Clipper frame, side oil tank when CB34 frames normally had no mounting points and a story of Hap Alzina building machines from parts.

I think this Hap guy will be my all time hero!

Interesting bitsa. There's nothing Catalina about that bike. Alloy Clipper frame, probably the Clipper gas tank, certainly not a Gold Star tank, A65 rear wheel, Triumph front forks and wheel, nice engine but its a road going engine not a Catalina. The GP carb looks to be a GP1 and by '62 they were using the GP2. Looks like a pile'o'parts someone threw together.

As far as the "Wader" mag I was under the impression that the tag has to say "Wader". I don't think all competition mags are "Wader" mags.

Says "Realistic Reserve", but that's not so. The Start Bid is already above the "realistic" price for this particular bike.

I stopped believing for a little while this morning. Journey is really going to be upset.

I went back for a more detailed look and can see the homemade battery box welded in that might explain the oil tank mounting. I think that Lannis is on the money about value.

Well with four hours to go and this bitsa is approaching $12K and it still hasn't reached that "realistic" reserve. What a joke, I hope the new owner realizes what he is buying.

From the eBay listing:
the frame number is CB34 which did cause me some concern at first but after talking to David White who was a BSA sales manager back in the day I am now less concerned smile
I am told that Hal Apzin in the USA built 50 or so goldies towards the end and Stan said this is one of them.
triumph twin leader front wheel and forks,
a standard oil tank ... I have a central oil tank which looks like it will fit but its not a genuine catalina tank may be a rarer one???

He's "less concerned," he "was told," "tank may be rarer," "looks like it will fit." The engine doesn't have a 'C' so it's not from a Catalina, the low number on the CB34 frame means it's not from an Alloy Clipper, it has the wrong oil tank, as well as the wrong forks and front wheel. Actually, no part of this bitza is a Catalina.

With 35 min. to go the bid is ~$14.3k, which is ~$7k higher than non-running bitzas like this sell for, at least in the U.S. However, it's hard to have much sympathy for the bidders because the information about what's wrong with this bitza, and what it's worth, is readily available for 0.5% of the current bid price.

Highest and final bid was $14,357.15. I see in his add that he would ship it back to the US.

Don't you mean Hal Apzin?

Sorry I misspelled Hal's last name.

Or, as he is known in the UK, Hal Apzin. Not to be confused with the musical Hellzapoppin'.

Just goes to show that the 'rubbish' bikes you Yanks forced us to build against our better judgement in the 60's weren't all that bad if they now sell in UK for double the US price. T120TT's being another example. Needs also to be genuine but as they are so rare in UK the gullible are more easily fooled.

Except the eBay "Catalina" was built in someone's garage, not in the factory, using a mix of parts from different models and marques.

When I stated a difference in price of $7k that was between what that Frankenbike bike sold for and what I believed it should have sold for given informed bidders. I wasn't comparing it with an actual Catalina in the same condition. If it actually had been a Catalina with the proper major bits, albeit with that Triumph front end, a price north of $10k would have been reasonable. Maybe as much as $14k, although that seems a little on the high side for a bike that appears to be in that condition.
