Probably a dumb question, but just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. My tach isnt working. Its a rebuilt one aprivatepeace503 on eBay; nice unit. In troubleshooting, I found that the Tach actually works (hooked a drill up to it), but its the rev counter drive not turning. I have verified that its sitting in the case correctly (mated to the oil pump). So here's the dumb question. The oil pump should spin the drive when I turn over the engine, right? There's nothing special about the counter drive itself (no moving parts). The entire thing just spins, right? So, is my pump is bad?

I've been considering replacing it with an SRM pump anyways due to the extreme wet sumping issue I have, so I'm merely just trying to confirm that I understand what's going on.

Thanks!

These bits get broken when DPOs try to remove the inner cover without withdrawing the tach spindle first,, the oil pump drive spindle has a fragile female drive like a deep screw head, the tongue of the tach drive engages in this, probably the driving part of the screw head end is broken if its just spinning, if the oil pump itself is not spinning your motor would wreck itself fairly quickly.
You can buy this part separately to repair your pump., but it needs stripping down to make the repair.

Here are the things that drive the tach cable.

Came across a picture of my pump when I first took the bike apart. Its indeed broken off. I should have thought to look at my old pictures before I posted this. smirk (and it would have been nice for the engine builder to mention it....)
