As I delve into the world of my 1940 silver star, I have encountered an oddity that I haven't ever heard of before: the "oil indicator button" (PN 66-8234). This is a button on the instrument panel in the tank and is directly supplied with engine oil. I am guessing this is a crude oil pressure gauge? Maybe spring loaded and it pops up when you have oil pressure? It seems it was fitted to all of the "deluxe" models of the late 30's with an instrument panel. Anyone know more about this or where I could find one?

Alex -

All the old pre-unit Triumphs have one of those. They're built onto the back end of the oil pressure relief valve, and while they're standing out proud, you can glance at it and tell whether you've got pressure or not ....

OK, I admit it, I'm addicted to brake fluid.

But I can stop any time I want.

I was thinking of incorporating one of these into my 3TA in place of the standard (non-button)OPRV, I can get a used one for $10, are there any leakage issues with them?

Hi Alex.
I believe this button is actually bakelite, but like you said, is directly fed with oil. Early M20's had them during the war attached to the timing cover by your right foot.

I am guessing the tank indicator was a similar set up. You could try contacting Henk at the BSA WM20 site for more info!

The one on my '59 3TA has the oil pressure button. The only issue is the rubber tube the button is mounted in can sometimes leak. Mine did, but I got a new tube and it has not leaked in years.

Alex,

Ah, your are NOPGS member #3. You swore an oath to avoid all use of oil pressure gauges in your lifetime. The penalties for making this device work will be severe and swift laughing :p

A crude attempt from many years ago to infiltrate our membership and very quickly picked up by our own Gage's Great Uncle the late Lord Nohelpmehere. It has been rumored that these devises were the fore-fathers of the modern hashish pipe. Though I certainly can not confirm that information.

Had that little device had any connection to hashish pipes, I would have known about it . . . I wouldn't have remembered it, but I would have known about it.

I really must go out to the shed and have a quick look at my "51 BSA C11 . . . now just exactly what is this thing called "oil pressure?"

I know I'm really late to this party, but just got into a '39 Silverstar myself and went looking for this part (66-8234) to no avail.

Mine is leaking at the base of the bakelite button. Would anyone know if the part is rebuildable? Looks like it is sealed around the base of the button. Or where I might find a replacement?

Oh wow, can't say I've seen one in such detail before. I'm sure there are ways to rebuild it, even if, say, a new button has to be made. I would love to get some detailed dimensions off that item...since I plan on replicating one for my project.

Wow, that's news. When's the move? There's a pretty active club up there, VME, that puts on a lot of rides and different events. They're big show/ride/event, The Isle of Vashon, will be around Labor Day weekend.

I start up there September 1 so it might be tough to attend this year. Any other time count me in, definitely the next.
