Left French France on Friday, all hot and sweaty, got to Blighty and the weather was perfick, after a shower I placed me size 11 on the already fully freighted FORTY INCHER, and off I did set...

Just a short 20 mile bimble brought me to a village in Kent called Newnham, and that fine village has its very own sports club, a massive field for the fit, to run about and get hot and bothered. And there is also a club house, so they can have showers, and the like. The Men of Kent section of the VMCC, have been having a camp there for the past 60yrs. Now I'm not sure if that's correct, perhaps they've been holding their Sittingbourne Run, at some other place, all I know is, it's been going 60yrs and I was attending the 60th one...

Got to the venue, and noticed that the squeeking I'd been hearing, wasn't the Bus I'd been following, or indeed that bloody Spanish truck that cut me up, it was ME. The rear brake had altered it's adjustment somehow, and the shoes were in contact with the drum a tad, this meant the brake was NEARLY about to catch fire, the paint on the drum was all nice and smoking... laughing

So off with all the gear, up with the canvas hovel, THEN, and only then, adjust the brake to have a fault free weekend. After all that I had me a look see...

This camp has a lot of campervans and trailers, as some of the bikes/riders are quite old...

Managed to get the Hairy Mong to actually BUY me a beer, not only buy it but pour it as well...

So after the Ale, a quick mooch...

And finally living proof, if any was needed, that the FORTY INCHER is alive and well, albeit a tad rusty and dirty...

Worry not, for this is NOT the end of the yarn, just the beginning, more will follow on a screen near y'all soon... bigt

I'll tell you, that VMCC knows what kinds of bikes to ride to a rally to give it a proper flair! I'd love to have followed one of those old poppers (or any of the others) to the rally just to hear the sound, watch them wobble on bumps, and smell the burning oil (or brake drums, as the case may be).

Hope the Mong isn't playing a trick on you and putting "used" beer in your mug, looks mighty suspicious and his arm is in the way. Good thing it's not American "Natural Lite" he's drinking, you'd never know the difference!!

The Velocette!! ... Love that Velocette!
Your A10 looks just great too, a mile eater for sure.
Is that The Mong's KX? Figure so, 'cause even over in the homeland they are a rarity me thinks.
Thanks Shaun.

That Velo looks like one of the real "road warriors" in that group. Don't see many of those in Velo form .... !

Well, just to keep all across the old Bliney educated, yes that is proper ale...its brewwed 1/4 mile up the road from the campsite..all proper in an old barn..Just open the tap and out it pours. Infact, as its actually an whole touring week, I arrived the day before the Kent Hillybilly Shaun. And after a days bimbling around with lots of well used properly ridden old bikes, it was anounced that we were off for a wander up to the brewery. so up we all strolled, the fella in the brew house handing us all a pint each. Very nice and very lovely it was too..so's i had to ask him for more..or it would've been rude of course. MORE ! he says, of course, you can all help ya selfs to as much as you like! Well fancy that ! It was like going into a pub and the landlord saying ' welcome in boys, feel free to help ya selves to as much ale as you like, and its all free!' Well the sun shone, then the sun set...and many a fine yarn was told.....
And as all of you who knows that Hillbilly well, will know that he's other name is the Buddah, on account of his ability to sit in one place and direct all and sundry and to educate them on the many and various reasons why we all owe him ale, I can assure you all,I spent possibly MORE of my fair share of time buying him ale....

Well, you shouldn't have given THAT little secret away, you could have used that "free ride" for the next year "Your round, Shaun, remember them 6 pints I bought you back in June, a special brew that was and very expensive, I haven't recovered yet, yes please you can put a drop i' there lad .."

Gotta think quick!!

bigt

After a bit of back-n-forth correspondence, I believe all pieces of the puzzle are in place. I'm expecting my VT title for the T-bird any time now.

Now where was I...? Oh yes, so Friday night was spent eating the fish & chips we pre-ordered, and quaffing cheap good Ale, ALMOST perfick, except, one of our guitar playing chums, had left it at home.. mad

So the Ale powered sing-a-long never happened, so we had to do it, Acapulco or whatever it is when you sing without music.. laughing

All in all a bloody good night was had by all, next morn we awoke to perfick Sun shine, so out with the Primus and on with the Full English, once that was put away, we got to call to gather around, thence followed the *Talk* about the run, and how to do the 'Drop of System'...

Never had any trouble with this on a VMCC event, like NEVER, always have trouble with it on a BSA club run, but NEVER with the VMCC. THAT, my pedigree chums was about to change... shocked

Today's run was to collect some French lads, fresh off the boat, a nice gentle type ride, around the lanes of Kent, to a fine Ale house. Where we would wait for the French, so off we set and when it was MY turn to point the way I took these...

Never had to point the way again, there were so many on the ride out, wonderful stuff, out in the lanes in the Sun shine. Then we came to the pub, too early for Ale so coffee was drank, and for them that never had breakfast, food...

After about an hour, the French people showed up, so I had a quick mooch around their machines...

There was a few more there, but we got the call to leave, I was told to look after a French man, along with a few others. Seems they don't do that *Drop of Thing* and they might bugger off, leaving no one pointing the way. So I got me French man, and introduced meself to him, in my school boy French, he replied in PERFICK English, but with a 'Marcus the Accent' accent...

Then it was off out into the lanes, all was going well, until... shocked

More later... wink

I like seeing those oddball French machines, you never see them anywhere else.

Their cars are all over the world (except the USA), top notch machines in my opinion, we owned 3 of them when I were a lad ....

.... but you never see French motorcycles outside of France. The Brits and Italians and Germans and Swedes and Spaniards and even the Russians sent millions of 'em all around the world, but nary a French motorcycle to be seen except some Motobecane mopeds or the odd Solex and such.

Our southern border is ony one small country away from their northern,
but I don't think I've seen more than two or three, at a classic bike meet, here either.
Some classic bike restauration and selling houses offer them on their websites, but the public has more interest in the Brits, Germans and Italiens.

Maybe the French industry stopped earlier than the Brits? I don't know if that is of influence...

UNTIL... Yes you guessed it, we got to a junction, and NO BUGGER was there.. mad

And about 12 others were behind me, them having French with them as well, so NOW what..?

Some went left, some went right, so I went straight on. And met up with some others, who were by now looking at maps, I dug out the Crab Peeler, and said we should carry on. So off we set, didn't see anyone else, and the miles clocked up. We were now getting low on fuel, so at the next petrol station we topped up, the French lad asked me if this was normal. No I told him, it's happened cos someone couldn't wait longer that 30 seconds on their own, they get scared being out in the countryside, he smiled knowingly, then we were off. Around the city of Canterbury with it's cathedral, so at least our French chums saw that, and eventually we pulled into the camp ground...

I immediately started the search for the idiot who buggered off, and once I found him I was shocked, SHOCKED I tells ya, it was a lad that should've known better, so me and the Hairy Mong gave it to him good and proper. Don't think he'll leave his post again in a hurry... bigt

Once that was all sorted I had a look around, I could smell something lovely in the air, and found this...

A feast fit for a King was on the go, and it was FREE for them that entered the rally, so as it was nearly done, we Ale'd up and waited for the call. It was lovely, and best of all, I had me THREE trotters, AND a pig's ear to munch on. Even managed to get the fourth trotter for Marcus the Accent to sample, he turned his nose up at first, but later, loved it.. grin

Then a lad struck up the music and off we went, quaffing Ale and enjoying life, we sat down next to a lady who spoke with a heavy French accent, a bit like Marcus uses, anyway, I asked what part of France she was from..? Turns out she's NOT French but Canadian, comes from Quebec, but she's married an English lad and has lived in Kent for over 35yrs.. laughing

So we're chatting away, and she says I love your Coon Skin, we have them in Canada, oh yes I says, well this one comes from Virginia, well she says, I've got a Beaver coat, in fact, she says, it's a SHAVED BEAVER.. blush

Well need I say more, the table erupted, and the Hairy Mong shouts out, I LOVE shaved beaver, and there she was, sat there in all innocents, chatting away. Me trying me best to keep a straight face...

What a great night we had, next morning it was the Sunday run, where even more show up, Baza57 along with Bro Tony came, so I hooked up with them, and did yet another 100 miles around the lanes. Just a few shots before the run...

And the lad that started the run off...

While we were out on the run, and to make it a tad more interesting, they handed us a quiz, where you had to find out the answers on the run, or general knowledge questions. Great fun, and I copied most of the answers from Baza, but one of them he got wrong, and I found out that I'd WON this because of it...

At the end of the ride, we were all presented with one of these...

What with it being their 60th year and all, a bloody good weekend, good company and a great time. Here's to the 61st.. clap

Have a look at this Youtube thing, one of the lad's did if you want to hear the bikes, there's a video after the first couple of photos, and that terrible squeak you'll hear, is that bloody Bombay Express the Hairy Mong has. It's that Indian front brake he has on it...
