Does anyone have images or drawings of the Matchless/AJS factory? I'd love to see what it looked like. All I can find on-line is references to its address:

Collier, Henry & Sons Ltd. (engineers), 44 Plumstead road, Plumstead SE 18 http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/wiki/1919_Post_Office_London_Location_Suburbs_Directory

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/matchless.htm

There's lots of images and even videos of Triumph and BSA, but none I can find of Matchless/AJS. Of course Triumph and BSA both were much larger operations, and made a lot more bikes and more importantly revenue and profit than Matchless/AJS, but hopefully there are some images out there.

Plug 18 Plumstead Rd, Greenwich, London SE18 7BZ, United Kingdom
into google maps, nothing left of the orginal building as it looks to have been built over and now is a small industrial estate.

"Of course Triumph and BSA both were much larger operations "

These words will come back to haunt you ? - AMC were at some stage the worlds largest manufacturer of motorcycles. In the early 1950s when AMC was AJS, Matchless, Norton, James, Francis Barnett and a couple of others. Manufacturing was not just at Plumstead then though...

Lets not forget there was a large recession, in the motorcycle industry too, in the mid 1950s, and afterwards the Triumph BSA empire emerged as the biggest. For a while.

There are lots of Plumstead factory pics, if you hunt around.
Yodel if you can't readily find any.
As mentioned above, the factory was demolished and a housing estate built there.

A"Motorcycle Apprentice" by Bill Cakebread is an absolute must foranyone interested in Matchless / AMC history. A thoroughly fascinating read.

No images, but I read that Boy George (George O'Dowd)'s father worked at the Matchless in London.
I enjoy looking at photos of the factories and workers at much as pictures of the bikes, so thank you for posting.
If I was young and had any money I'd immediately buy a 600 twin Matchbox engine and frame, and build a road-going G45 "replica". I think it's one of the great beauties of motorcyling.

Here are some posted on Worldwide AJS & Matchless Motorbike Owners! (Facebook page) https://www.facebook.com/groups/22528289585/

Spares and Service dept in Burrage Grove. Pic taken from roof of factory. Pub at the end of the road (Queens Arms) is pretty much the only building left.

Speaking of spares, I thought that it is interesting that while 25% of Matchless machines were sold each year in the USA, the Americans used 75% of the spare parts that the factory produced.

I think they were not as competent at bodging as the rest of the market grin
