Hello all!

Up for sale is my 1966 BSA A65 Lightning. According to the engine & frame numbers it falls as an early production 1966 model. Frame & engine numbers do not match. Bike is being sold with a "Bill Of Sale". Engine is locked. I do not see any broken fins on both the barrel and cylinder head. No cracks on the cases. Frame looks straight and is not cut. I have to many projects and must let this one go. I am in Lancaster, CA if anyone is interested. Thanks

How about posting the engine number, LH side, below the cylinder base flange. the motor has a few features that look like it might be a '67, so was curious to know................

a 67 would have A65 frame numbers. a 66 is still running A50 frames. what I am curious about is, wouldn't there be a number stamped on the lower left frame boss?

I have witnessed a rash of ground off BSA numbers lately. some some so blatant I cant believe it.

The Engine does appear to have 67 features. A65L 218 is the engine number. Thanks

Yep,..... you're correct. Early 1966. Carbs, timing and rocker covers looked later is all. Lots of good stuff on that roller......Where is Lancatser again ?? ;-)

Hey hack, 1966 would have been stamped with an A65L on the frame for a Lightning.

I have one in the garage, so can confirm.

There is also two mounting tabs on the right hand side of the
frame below where the side covers would go. Almost looks like a mount for models that came equipped with high pipes.

so I have to respectfully disagree with you guys.

the chart doesn't paste like it shows, but you can go click on the home page BSA info on this britbike.com website to see for yourself.

one thing is certain. The frame number is located for BSA's 1969 and earlier on the left side of the frame, on the front engine mounting lug.

its a flat surfaced lug. if its been ground off it could be rounded like the lug on the right. I have seen numbers stamped ALSO on the shroud plate covering the left side of the neck. but it should match the frame lug numbers.

Not a bad start, here's how I know...

Before

After (and it wasn't even finished)

It ran pretty well with no more than a carb clean and new oil after sitting for almost 30 years

Oddly enough, everybody is right.
1966 unit twins started off with A50C frame numbers, and switched to matching engine & frame numbers some time during the model year.

It's very possible that the engine did indeed come with this frame from the factory as they are 101 digits apart from each other.

Yes....This posting had me thinking, so I checked sources online..Most places say that 1966 models had the nonmatching numbers..I thought maybe there was a problem with the numbers on my bike...I did find a couple of sites stating that the matching frame and engine numbers started late 1966...

My '66 mus5 be a late version, it's numbers match. Another interesting bit is the frame # stamped on the casting. The casting is rounded and rough. My '67's stamp on the same casting has a flat milled surface. The '67 I assume is an early one by its low #. I'm not sure how much separated these two, but somewhere inbetween anoth change happened.

I was sure there was a thread which had worked out the cutover.

Gary E did the hard work on engine and frame numbers some time back.

According to this thread , BSA switched to matching numbers for the twins starting from 3217 in November 1965
