…your Alternator studs begin to break at the boss…you drill out..helicoil..make studs of 5/16 welding rod..they last ..but the boss's crack after 6 months..
more troubles..
and rather than weld up an re-tap
what can be done as in rigging a DC generator instead..?
running on just the Batt. for now

I saw a chopper with a Chevy alternator run off the drive chain.

Possibly you could make an aluminum generator support like was used on the A65 (67?)?

…riding Today some 30 mi. the bike actually felt better at the throttle on just the battery..sans the disconnected alternator, as if the advance was sharper?..{ maybe the Box' likes' unconverted direct DC ? ]….Don't Know..But,
i'm going to see if I can get 100mi on just the battery… [ I use a Pazon which won't get Wonky like a Boyer at 11 volts…It's good down to 9 volts ]...i'll have a second batt. stowed while testing…but if I can…?.. Do a 100mi..?..to Heck w/ the Alt. !! ….If I can do 50mi…?...and 15- 20 of that.. w/35watt headlite [ coming into Winter]…?…Heck…I'm OVER the alternator…?..The Batt's set up as Easy to remove..Easy to re-install...I'll Charge overnite…[ If need be ] and be done with Alternator,Rotor and Reg/Rectifier Griefs..
It's just perfect…[ for Me ]..If, andI believe it, after today [ 30 mi cost me just 0.5 volts on Batt ].. that 'just 'the Batt. will suffice for that 100mi a day,or less, pattern of riding I keep to ?…Heck..?… I'm IN.. so,…PR will say... It's not going to be' Long Range' this way…But ?….I can carry Two Batts .. and I'm fine with that …Damn it's just become a whole lot Simpler …and, initially,….I thought,…OMG,...it's all over...

It might pay to take a solar charger with you. They're only about $30.

The magnetic drag on the crank from an alternator has a significant effect on horsepower; that's why flattrackers run complete loss ignition. So it's not surprising that you can notice a difference in performance without the alternator.

If you're going to run complete loss ignition, you may want to invest in a deep-cycle battery, the more amp-hours the better. "Regular" batteries don't like to be deeply discharged, and will have a short lifespan after being run down a few times.

…Yes, It's more Pep..and of course freer revving too, Mark..
I have a lithium/ion batt ,which has the deep cycle protection,on the bike about a year now…no problems there.
Believe its a 10 AH..Best Batt. I've ever had…

Did the 50mi test Today..no headlight..but plenty Stop light stops in & out of Town…Started with 13.33V and ended with
13.03V….Amazing
Then w\headlight To Home another 2 or 3 Mi…No problems..just a Big Smile..
I'm not gonna Charge it Tonite
Take her another 50 mi Tomorrow..take readings..See how many Mi. I make over next few days..? [Days ? WoW ].. till the Batt reads 11V,or even
10.5v..and that'll be my guide for Range between charges…Gonna put a Volt Meter on the Handlebar too..keep watch..
All in All…This is looking Good...

I'd be careful with that Li battery, they don't go down gracefully.. just cut dead at a certain voltage.

And nothing to do with the weight of the components and the additional components - all potential failure points to a racer - necessary for an alternator to charge a battery ...? wink

Years ago I owned a smaller than usual Lucas Generator with brackets & clamps to attach it to your frame or girder fork & it was driven by pressing its rubber wheel against your tyre ..... Yes , like a bicycle dynamo !!
It was a 3 brush gen with a cut out under the end cover.
Presumably this was sold to update acetylene lighting ???

Elijah.

Regards,

My LSR 650 Triumph has run with and without an alternator at the track...If there was any difference in speed it wasn't noticed.
760 Watts per HP is used to rate HP...But it doesn't work out in real life with electric motor power consumption. One HP 120 volt DC motor draws about 1200 watts, one HP 120 volt AC single phase about 1800 watts.
Total loss electrical is fine unless you need a headlight on for more than a brief time.

Feel like a fabricator? My small Kubota diesel tractor has this alternator, about 3 inches in diameter and 75 bucks on eBay. You could modify the primary cover to mount it partially external ,direct driven off the crank. Get a two wire version and use any permanent magnet regulator capable of 210 watts.Tell bystanders it's a magneto...

650 Triumph modified production LSR record holder 133.1 MPH... Twin 650 engine Triumph LSR that goes sorta fast...

Flat trackers eliminate it because a narrower primary cover can then be fitted, preventing the engine from digging in and lifting the rear wheel!

When people who should have known better cautioned me about the dangers of motorcycle racing, I always told them that a fear of death is nothing more than a fear of life in disguise.

…Got a 110Mi. on the batt…at that point..9.7 volts
It took a full ReCharge [Good]…
but it seems Now,to be Safe,I have a {limited} Daily Range
of 50-70MI…and just a few Mi available Headlite on after That..

That Tractor Alternator looks a Good Ticket back to Longer Range Biking
Looks Mountable..Tho I run Belt & no cover ..some Ring & Bracket could do..

Sounds like you have your range scoped out. If it were me, I'd be carrying another fully charged battery as a spare if I were planning to go this route. At least the kind you're using is spill-proof.

Good luck

…One back-up behind Downtube [resting on Swing arm pivot]…the Primary thats Wired in.. just in front of Down tube resting on the Tranni flat…each foam
cushioned and retained but easily removable for Charging ..and,a plus, the LI's are surprisingly light…Two would not Tip the scale on
one Gel,or Lead Acid..

Just read that you run a belt and no cover. No cover and alt. stud problems, imagine that! I gotta ask, is all this just in the pursuit of being "different"? Jack

…Don't understand Either Comment, Jack
You Know the Primary Cover does not Support the Alternator or the Studs…and the Bikes never been over on it's side.
Removing the Rotor I found the Crank end cracked in the Key slot
the Rotor pin had some play, minuscule, but, the Rotor Accentuated It..
The eccentric Spin was making Periodic contact with the Alt.
Which caused Stud Failure..Boss's Too…
What I'm about Now has
Nothing to do with Difference "trying" ..?
Just trying to Keep the Ride Going..which
seems to justify
the[ different] arrived at solution; thus far..?
I'd have to split case to weld…an might just as well go with 'new' case..?
but not yet..
