The van was sociable, and good for anyone who wanted to drink a lot, but we'll survive without it! Might even be a nice little walk in good weather, work off some of that pasta and wine ....

Now that I can take a deep breath after the season.

I see you guys are discussing the dates of May 15th & 16th for 2015 for my annual British Invasion, so I am blocking off that weekend next year for Brit Bikes only. As usual for those that haven't stayed with us before you must call or email me to book, if you go online it will say that we are booked.

Six months and counting!

Hey Windy...do you know if people are planning to go early to yer campground? Reason I ask is because Mike Cheyne from England has leave from May 13th to June 3rd and wants to come over. Would anyone object to making it the following weekend? May 22-23...would make it easier and better for him anyway.

Melissa?

I have not heard anything yet as to early arrivals but the two goons from NH usually come early along no butt from kneebraskie. as to a change of date I am not looking to do that as the mid month has been the norm for as long as I have coming on it.

Well...last May it was 16th-18th! Obviously, whenever you want to have it is when it will be. Just thought I'd ask as I think it will be hard for Mr Cheyne to make it that weekend. My memory is far from perfect but I seem to remember it varying some from year to year.

Cheers

Like every year, the date conflicts with one of my dual sport rides. Being with webmaster for the DS rides consortium, and that my local club "works" the event, I really have to be there.

Tried to do both the Year of the Fog. After a predawn ride down the mountain Sunday in the fog, and an interaction with a law enforcement professional, and the mental fog from the fog, I was unable to complete the DS ride.

Gonna do the DS weekend, which also allows my 12yr old daughter a ride weekend of her own on her bike.

Just cant do both rides and be able to enjoy them.
Besides, my BSA still isnt done {although I expect to start changing that in a few weeks, with the help of a buddy!{

Want to send me a "need" list and I can see what I can come up with? January isn't that far away and I'll have extra room in the chair.

I really dont think it will be a parts issue. On the last ride the tranny would not shift into any gear above 2nd.
I am thinking it is a problem with the shifter quadrant, probably a spring.

Just a guess, been sitting for almost 7 years now. Before that, it sat for 24, when I put a few thousand miles on it. It sat before that from the mid '70s...

I have a buddy who is probably as good a Brit bike mechanic as I am a painter, he's gonna help me out with it. He'll be joining us at Broxton as well.

I have a parts engine with the tranny cluster and shifter already out. If I do find a parts need, I'll be sure to touch base!

I have a dozen or so complete transmissions....and a cutaway case (thanks to Hp by Stan for that idea) so you can see how your trans works before it goes back in your engine.

But...these things are really simple and your buddy will probably find the problem. Some times a broken indent spring will cause it to hang up....but when it has happened to me it was stuck in one gear and that's all I could get....made for some interesting rides home. smile

Just let me know if there's anything I can send your way...just trying to help.

It shifted once ... the first couple conflicted with Mother's Day, I think, so since then it's always been the third weekend in March, however that falls. Easy to remember and I know not to schedule anything else on top of it ...

If I can help by picking up Mike the Geordie at an airport and bringing him straight there, I'll do it ....

Probably no way to help unless Mike can get off a week early. I will be checking with him. If he can make it early I will be pickin im up in Columbus, most likely. If he can't than I guess he will be missing it because he said he gets home on the 13th. Too bad...we'll find other things to do.

Will you guys have room for one more next year? I was so envious looking at all the pictures from the past rides. Finally have my T160 sorted and would really like to make the event in 2015. Hopefully someone else from Florida would like to ride up too.

Union called my cell, wanting me to bid vacation for 2015...I told them I needed the 15th thru the 17th of May, and it's set...Any other date I would'nt be able to make, not that THAT'S a big deal.., but just had to bid according to what I've read here. I don't have a Vintage British Bike right now, kind of in-between (have my eyes on one, and will be in my garage next weekend, but NOT MINE, Hey, it's a start!) I do have A British Bike, however, my beloved 2005 Triumph "America" that I will be bringing, unless things change and I'm able to "acquire" this bike I have my eyes on. The "Pastor" is 70+ years old, and has some illness, but speaking to him on the phone about the bike, he says he has too much "attachment" to it to sell to me. I have talked him into letting me bring the bike to my "toasty" garage for some TLC, and to get it out of the weather, he say's "Come and get it", so hopefully I'll go get it this weekend...It's the '72 T120 I fixxed up for him a couple of years ago for a Church service, (The "immaculate resurrection") and only a few serial numbers away from my first T120. Hopefully I will somehow inherit the bike, or he may let me "borrow" it for the 3 State Ride...We'll see, but not holding my breath....

YO Windy

Hey man there's a few things I want you to get ready to do to my bike this year...
I'll send a list at some point, and we can dial in in.
It'd be convenient to work it out that the bike was finished right around time for the TSMR.

Yes, still have you in my phone. I'll PM a list, and then call later in the Winter to set up my bringing it down to you, maybe sometime in April? Or what ever's convenient. The bike is going to be on display in New York til Mid February, and I might "shop it around" while it's up there to see if anyone else wants to use it.

I'll be in touch then. Thanks!

That would describe "Weezies" in Richmond but that's a looong way off the Parkway!

You sure it was "Weezies" or was it the Tuggles Gap restaurant?

If there's a "fried food only" place near the Parkway, my name is probably on the wall somewhere ... !

I think the place is in Buena Vista Lannis. A very long downhill run off the parkway on route 60 with a well needed gas stop at the bottom.

I know Buena Vista well, have eaten in all 6 restaurants there, and the only one that might qualify with the description given would be "Kenny's", an old burger/chicken/biscuit joint that does good breakfasts and everything else is cooked in a grease fryer.

If Richrd saw the large lady cooking in the back, it might easy have morphed from "Kenny's" to "Weezie's"!

That's 15th through the 17th of MAY, there, soldier.

The ride would still be fun a month late, but a little lonely .... !

Lannis

OK, I admit it, I'm addicted to brake fluid.

But I can stop any time I want.

Since I live fairly close I usually get to ride the course at least one other time each year. It is different but I enjoy all day rides through pretty country by myself.

I do try to pick a nice day rather than have to ride on a set date regardless of the weather.

We picked May because it's "just" before the season starts up there. Blowing Rock is a resort town and in the middle of June...it's elbow to elbow with people and so is the Parkway. Not to mention how many people are on Hwy 58 in June.

In 14 years I'd have to say we had more good weather overall than bad.

Wishing you all blue skies, warm weather and empty roads.

there's only two kinds of weather, dangerous and good. I can only think of two years that were not good.

It's the people that make the event special, the riding is secondary but plenty of fun no matter what.

The weather doesn't matter if there's sunshine in your heart.

Not being able to see on the Parkway from time to time is just a fact of life up here. It tends to spook the tourists more than it does the locals. I think if you do the research....speed is still the danger here.....and to me, our "dangerous" years were back when Windy still wore full leathers. wink

Trying to decide logistics on this trip from Douglasville, Georgia to Blowing Rock. Basically I have 2 choices. Load the bike on the truck and drive to Gainesville to a friends house and ride from Gainesville, up through Clayton and US 23 to Asheville and pick up the parkway in Asheville, OR, load the bike, drive it to my Aunt's house in Gastonia, and ride it in from there....Much more risk in the first plan, but bike is running fine, and I will purchase new points and plug wires, so I SHOULD be alright (what I said last time), or play it safe and launch out of Gastonia. Bike is COMPLETELY stock with all original electronics, and running great....Any input appreciated....

the road from gastonia to blowing rock sucks as it is a 4 lane and divided in some places like an interstate but stand a better chance of getting help if needed. just saying.

Ah....you damn tourist laughing

There are a LOT of different ways to get from Gastonia to Blowing Rock....IMO a couple of them rival anything you'll find on the TSMR.

Use your imagination...better yet....try a map wink laughing

I hear ya Bryan.....and DON'T look for those STRAIGHT lines....go for the twisty ones bigt

DPO.....bite the bullet and just drive the darn truck to Blowing Rock....that's NOT a big deal and will give you a little more comfort knowing your truck's close if you need it. bigt

PLENTY of people drive up/down/over. You'll never beat Barb's record anyway....and with Richrd out there second place will be tied up for a LONG time.

Drive up....get there early Thursday or Friday and get some extra riding in with the boys.

This is going to be a strange May for me this year.....Pokey

Hi Gents-I am really looking forward to attending the ride this year! I have already contacted Melissa and made arrangements for a room. DPO, I plan on sharing a room with a friend of mine from down here in Florida. However, if he backs out your more than welcome to split the room with me for the weekend.
I plan on hauling my bike in the back of my pickup. Is there an area suitable for easing the bikes out of the trucks by ramp? From previous pictures it looks like parking will be at a premium. Is there a secured parking area close by that we can leave he trucks? Thanks for any advice.

Jerry

the parking lot has a steep entry on one side that some use to unload at. as to parking it is a little tight and not much of a place for overflow but it has not been unmanageable. also welcome to the ride.

By May I hope to have choices...

The Thunderbolt is gettin it's tailfeathers fixed. Seems the vibration has caused it to shake to pieces. The Firebird is almost sorted. The Lightning Rocket had a set back. Didn't exactly blow up as much as the compression went away. Mechanical chaos ensued (but at least the battery stayed charged!)

I'm planning on being there May 15-17th.

DPO- I would be interested in sharing a room and splitting expenses. Already contacted Melissa and have a reservation in. So far things are looking good, will have more info as the date gets closer.
Feel free to give me a PM.

Willie in helicopter school? Dang, I hope he's the Professor Director Emeritus of the school and not a student, he's been flying helicopters since Leonardo Da Vinci invented the things, what's he supposed to learn?

Army, what you gonna do with them?

We have had the privilege of spending time at the Tuscany hilltop town of Vinci, hometown of Leonardo together with it's castle museum that includes working models of his inventions.
Not only did he conceive the idea of the helicopter
http://www.leonardodavincisinventions.com/inventions-for-flight/leonardo-da-vinci-helicopter/
but also the parachute
http://www.da-vinci-inventions.com/parachute.aspx

An interesting visit for those heading to 2016 BSA International
https://goo.gl/maps/9aJNK

And so many other places in that same area - Florence, Fiesole, Lucca, Pisa, San Miniato, Volterra, San Gimignano etc etc plus small fortified hilltop villages eg Montecarlo

PS
Lannis, if Willie was Emeritus he would be retired and thus able to partake of the TSMR

Blessed are the curious for they shall have adventures

Possibly, but a lot of times "Emeritus" means "I'm still one and still qualified but I don't have to follow any rules because I'm not really getting paid, But I'm Still The Boss!".

He might just be showing those youngsters how it's done ....

I just sent Melissa a note via her website telling her Bob and I will be there again this year. I noticed a link from the site showing the various attractions and activities in the area listed by date. Would you believe, not ONE mention of leaky Brit bikes and the wild men that ride them??

I'll take a wild stab in the dark, or as it is more widely known, a S.W.A.G.
(Sophisticated Wild Ass Guess)
-to assume
the TSMR and crew would fall more solidly under the heading of
*activity*
and not so much under the heading of
*attraction*?

Come to think of it, *activity* might be something of a stretch too!

Mr Mike....by this time each year I would have already ridden the loop at least once, ordered our food for Saturday's dinner on the grounds and made our reservations for Friday night's dinner. (always a month in advance after I got burnt once by not doing so) BUT.....for me, it's not going to happen, I'm out and wish you guys and gals the best. There's a slight chance I might be able to make Wendy's campground before the ride....but I'm starting a new project in the next couple of weeks and I'm going to be tied up 24/7 until it's completed. If I do make the camp ground....it will be on my way home one afternoon after work. The project is for GE at their facilty in Ashe County. (Jefferson/West Jefferson)

I'll be thinking about you all and keep my fingers crossed the weather is the BEST it's ever been.

Take care.....Pokey (aka Gordon in NC) ex TSMR co-host

Hey Mr Mike.... laughing....you need to tell those people they need to get out more!!!!!!

Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'll show up on a bike at the BIBR rally and Mike G's OSMR.

The only other event I'm looking at this year is Brits On The Hill. I really would love to make that one too.

You guys will be in my thoughts this year. 14 years in a row is hard to forget.....all those miles and smiles.

After this year....it'll just be you and Lannis who have attended all of them. bigt

Take care, Pokey (aka Gordon the mother hen)

Look Out! it looks like Sweet M's email is being controlled by aliens or a cruiser type bike group.

I know you will know better than to open any attachments you might get from her.

Doing it at Ben's place has been mentioned. He's on a hill too as it happens. My place is also an option but it seems to be too far away for most.

Awwwwwww.....there's plenty of time for another thread....we're just talking and those TSMR people will understand wink

It seems like the event's date fell on or around one of the other events I attended but I don't remember. I'll keep an eye out for any word on if it'll happen and like I said...I've wanted to attend that one for a long time....so I'll do my best to try and be there.

Not sure what I'll be riding this year.....the B44 needs a freshen up but the engine bits are still at the shop. Not sure if the B50 is up to a long ride and it's not set up to haul all the junk I drag along.....but one way or another I need to get some two wheel time in.

Take care......Pokey

Richrd.....weren't you the one who taught me that NEBRASKA is just one BIG flat topped hill????? laughing

You know.....that is something to think about. Instead of (or along with) an event that happens in the same place each year...an event that moves around the country. I'd LOVE to see where Mike G's from......Richrd too. If you think about it we could pretty much cover North to South the whole East coast. Starting at the Carter's Brothers to Mike G's. Then cross the Mississippi to Richrds backyard one year. It's already sorta been done with gettogethers at Tim's, Lannis', Mr Ben's and Wade's.

A mind should never rest.....Pokey

No...mind! Mind! Wonderful idea. I was actually thinking of suggesting it. Moving the event around, that is. I'm like Tim in that respect. Not having a plan I mean. I want somebody else to plan the where and the when. If we have it here at my place I would have to do a little planning but I can live with that. Just need to get some people to agree to do it. Could just post my address and a date and see who shows up I guess. Is anybody else reading this?

Well it is only two weeks until the 15th British Invasion at the Blowing Rock Inn help

Hopefully Mother Nature will have all the rain out of her system by then and it will be nothing but a beautiful weekend for us!

We do still have rooms available, you will have to call because I have blocked them out on the internet so only you special "biker" people can stay with us.

And just FYI, I making sure all of the local cats are being kept at home that weekend! That poor cat - I just want to call the local animal shelter to go save him.

Ray and I are counting the days!

P.S.
Sorry about the crazy email you may have received from me, someone hacked my business email account!

Rest assured that no cats have been harmed, befuddled, or otherwise alarmed in the production of any any recent photographs, stories, or tall tales.

The Shop Cat at Baxter's, for example, is a very self-possessed, independent cat who will go along with a joke but did NOT give me the impression that he would take any nonsense from anyone, especially someone that he could whip with one paw tied behind his flank ....

Back at the 10th TSMR and the ride to Henry's emporium at Kingsport TN, I was very uncertain about Henry's watchcat.
That cat had a look in his eye!

Henrys cat was a "Doberman" of a watchcat. I once put my face up against the store glass at night afterhours for a peep at the brit bikes and that cat leaped at my face, rebounded off the glass and scared the heck outta me.

OK guys and gals I went for a pre route ride and here is what I found. the first section of the park way is in good shape, 221 off the mountain is having some patch work done BUT could use a repave on a lot of it but is still OK. The goat path is in great shape from the work that was done 2 years ago. the NC side of 321 is OK but is getting worse and the TN side is in great shape. 421 has taking another beating this winter so watch out for some bad places, not as bad on the way over but worse coming back to mountain city. the lunch stop is taking care of along talking to the other gas stops. 58 is in OK shape but you will still need to watch out for gravel in some places, same as always there. now to the love it hate it parkway, 20 miles south there is a detour off of it and back on at 421 (deep gap) it is VERY well marked so there SHOULD be no trouble and on a side note for the directionally challenged where we first get on at laurel springs it has a large detour sign IF you turn NORTH. remember the parkway is ALWAYS SOUTH. another warning do not speed on the parkway, it is federal park land so has its own rules and they hit you hard. in chatting to our inn keeper it is also a mandatory appearance in asheville so NO just mailing in a fine. last but not least there will be NO shuttle to supper friday night, the exon beer store is closed so it is a drive to food lion. the southern comfort has mixed revues but there a few other places to get some breakfast within walking distance and the saturday night BB Q is still on. see yall on the 15th.

That's the way it was for the first 4 years or so while they were building that stone bridge over 421 ... I'm surprised to hear that they're at it again, that bridge looked like it would last forever .... !

The "walk to breakfast" is an old tradition; the Waffle House in Boone is OK but it's just not the same, so we'll make sure we know where the breakfast places in Blowing Rock are, and we'll give them a shot .... !

we also had a detour just a few years ago so it sure looks like us tax payers are taking it in the shorts on this stone covered money pit. maybe the contract should have a performance/time warranty.

I was there last year. Rode as the last bike in the whole parade.

I have a family reunion this year....the divorce (if I missed it) would cost more than I can afford at this point in my life.

Ok - the ducks are lining up. Just got one trip to drop...that's a pretty good sized duck which may be hard to move.

The Thunderbolt has rebuilt tail feathers and a re-welded driving light mount so I can ride once again to the TSMR.

Somehow it always works out.

Who am I staying with?

Can't imagine SG/BG feeling "pressure"! Not after riding that A65 across country and back and up and down ... !

Really looking forward to seeing everyone. Installing a luggage rack and a voltmeter on the Norton and ready to go soon ....

Cool. Been really busy. Thanks. 404-791-0704.

I may have to drive through the night to make it there...

Nope! The trip dropped. I'll be there Friday AM. I think I'm camping my way to the TSMR. Monday at TWO. Tuesday at Ironhorse. Wednesday at Blueridge Motorcycle campground. Thursday ? Windy's. Are people at Windy's before the TSMR?

Anybody interested?

I've convinced the Fabulous Fay to ride with me, although it doesn't include an offer of camping all week. I think our 20 days of camping in the UK on the A10 in 2008 is still filling her camping quota.

If you can pull off having her come on the trip, you get the Macho Man of the Year award for sure ....

Well I begged but she is not coming. Sounds like it's just me. I'm not giving up though but she has a good out on Saturday.

Plan B:

Monday - Ironhorse NC.
Tuesday - Blueridge Motorcycle Campground.
Wednesday - Switchback.

NOTE: Turn the sound off.....if you're viewing it in photobucket it's messed up...and I sorta freaked out and forgot I was behind the camera....this was our third attempt (yep that's 3 TVs) and we FINALLY got the kids to hit it at the same time. laughing

Yep....Thanksgiving at the Gray's...get through eating dinner, then drag something out of the house and shoot it!!! laughing
