Is their a more complete workshop manual than is in The Goldstar Book by BMS?
When re-assembling how do you determine what thickness of cylinder base shim to use?

The Table of Contents and a photo of the most comprehensive DBD workshop manual I'm aware of is in post #498270. Unfortunately, it's not on Amazon.com so the only way to have one is to assemble it yourself. Short of that, BritBike Forum serves an on-line alternative of sorts.

Anybody: I have tried using search function to locate this post number that magnetoman references, but I cannot get there from here.

How does one find that posting?

I typed the posting # into search and it came up but the table of contents of the DVD doesn't appear to have a comprensive workshop manual on the DBD.

There are so many holes in the engine assembly info. in BMS's The Goldstar Book I'm very reluctant to tear my engine down without knowing fastener torque values, how to determine the thickness of the cylinder base shim to use, how to replace valve seats and, exactly, what type to use, where to get them, proper final valve seat contact width etc., so I can get everything back together correctly.

Listed in The Goldstar Buyer's Companion book under Sources of Additional Information, Classic and Mototcycle Mechanics magazine, there are four articles on Goldstar Engine Rebuild that might be nice to have. I wonder if they would contain the basic info. needed to disassemble and re-assemble the engine.

My history and interest dictates that I will, at least, take my good running DBD engine apart and put it back together as I have on every Porsche 4 cyl. 4-cam engine I have gotten my hands on even though they ran well too. I will not get a good night's sleep until I check out the internals of this awesome little engine. After all it is 54 years old, I know very little of its history and I want to know it's set up they way it's supposed to be. I keep waking up with un-answered questions.

What the photo in that post shows is the ~500-page manual I assembled for myself from every source I could lay my hands on over the past 20 years.

The thickness of the manual shows that a lot of information is available. Unfortunately, it isn't available in any one spot.

Thank you very much for clarifying that.

I don't know what's the problem, because searching for that post no. didn't work for me either. But, here's a direct link to it:

So, Ron, I'm beginning to get a slight grip on who's who on this forum and who knows what.

You have compiled all of this information on BSAs (really nearly everything there is) and make it available on the DVDs I can order from the website. Is that correct?

Hmm, there are two points in your post that I'm uncertain of. Well, only one if you're referring to my post, since I'm pretty certain my name isn't Ron.

I thought your use of 'DVD' in your earlier post was just a typo, and that you had meant to type DBD. In any case, there isn't a DVD of that DBD shop manual. It exists only in paper form in that three-ring binder shown in the photograph, so there is no way to order it. Sorry.

p.s. there's no realistic way for me to have it copied since section separators and grease stains are intermixed with the content, some of which is from copyrighted magazines and books.

Sorry about the Ron thing. I guess my grip in the website is not very good after all.

Other than doing all of the countless hours of work you did compiling your notebook how can one get all of the information, i.e. fastener torque values and cylinder base shim selection (.010", .020", .030" .040' or .064") required to put the engine back together correctly?

A change in the cylinder base shim would make a substantial difference in valve clearance I would think.

Zoe, these engines were handbuilt by the top BSA workers not using a manual, you do need a manual but you also need to understand the techniques ued in the day to assemble a precision engine using non-precision parts. Look up blueprinting an engine on google and start to see whats involved.

Buy the Haynes manual and use the information with a critical eye. Haynes are good but do have errors and can be too generic when they cover multiple makes and models. Use this information along with your parts manual, owners guide, other sources and this forum. Most of the questions you have been asking are answered in the Haynes manual.

There are many, many photographs in my and other members' restoration threads in the "members' bike project section".

Zoe: The BMS book has on page 49 (at least my version) a piston chart that gives some examples of comp ratios. While only the BB engines have examples I would think the change would work for the later types.

For the BB34 a 1/32" shim dropped a 7.5 ratio to 7.2 while a 1/16" shim dropped a 9.0 to 8.4. The BB32 was a bit more dramatic with a 1/32" dropping an 8.0 to 7.5 and a 9.0 to 8.75 (?).

However given the various barrel heights listed on another thread I would use the data on the Pearson website that gives liquid volumes for the combustion chambers to be used to calculate the compression ratios.
