I read somewhere that the veglia speedo on the later 1978+ T140 Triumphs lies on the left drive side of the bike (and not on the right as usual on a disk/drum setup).

I've been trying to find some photos of this, but there are scant examples on google images.

I was wondering what precautions were made to stop the speedo cable hitting the drive chain, in particular the route of the cable given the speedo is on the drive side?

It is on all Triumphs with a rear disc brake, from the T160 (Smiths speedo/drive) onwards.

On my T160's (one of which I've owned from brand-new), the cable is tied to the swinging arm tube about where it bends towards the pivot then it's tied to the drive-side frame tube where that curves under the engine, so the cable is between the two chain runs and the curve between the ties allows for swinging arm movement.

The cable curves around the front of the engine - I don't try to make it follow the lower frame tube curve because that's too tight for the cable - tied to the the front downtube (one on a oif) to stop it touching the exhausts, 'round the headstock and up to the speedo.

Hth.

Regards,

Correct me if I'm wrong I'm pretty sure I've seen a rear spoked T140 wheel and the speedo was on the right side.

It's on the later cast ally rims I believe the speed was on the left/drive side.

Could I get a photo of your drive side speedo in particular of the speedo cable route via the swing arm? Would be much appreciated.

No, it wasn't. Up to the '79 season, the T140/TR7 drive gearbox was on the right side.

The change of location to the left (drive) side did not take place until the Veglia drive gearboxes were introduced, this occurred during the '79 model season.
The change to the speedo drive gearbox also required a different rear hub assembly.

(Veglia instruments were, however, fitted to some batches of '78 season machines).

But which November?
According to the Triumph date codes/numbers, there would have been '79 season "PA" prefix T140s built in Nov. '78 and a second lot of PA prefix bikes built in Nov. '79 as the "1979 build season" lasted nearly a year and a half, HA11001-PA24608 (should have ended at XA24790 ("XB24609 to 24790 XB date code used in error, should be XA").

Presumably, your T140 is one of the early (Nov. '78) built PA models?

Erm so anyone have a photo of the LHS/Drive side veglia and it's cable routing? Would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the difference is cast alloy rim - LHS drive side veglia speedo drive, spoked rim RHS disc brake side speedo drive.

No, definitely two different spoked rear wheel hub assemblies used on the T140/TR7, one to suit the Smiths RH speedo drive gearbox (early) and another for the Veglia drive (late).

Are the veglia type drives still available? I want to adapt one to a girder front wheel off an M20 BSA which runs a nearside drive. Very hard to come by as they turn in the opposite direction from standard ones.
