I have decided to give the ol' 68' Lightning a change of colour, Its going from 70' Blue to Candy Red (actually a Honda candy red)but it would be more period correct than the blue is.

Because of this I have decided to go for the 68' style decal but there are two.

Could anyone tell me which decals were designated for what country/region? I like the first image with the yellow BSA flag as it gives a bit of "lift" off the panel. However, I would like to know which one was designated for where.

Thanks in advance.

Allan, is this a trick question? Or are you thinking that both of the decals are designated for different regions of the U.S.?
I'm not familiar with the decal with the yellow BSA logo, so my guess is that that one is the "home market" decal.

I had heard in the past that the logos with the American flag were produced by one of the U.S. BSA distributors.

BTW, not to be un-patriotic, but I think the yellow BSA flag is more attractive - especially on a red background.

On a Spitfire, the yellow flag looks out of place with the bikes red and ivory colors and the transfers colors of red, blue, white and black.

I'm gunna stick them on my 1970 Lightning!

According to the BSA owners handbook the one with the BSA logo was fitted to side panels on the Royal Star 1968 also Thunderbolt 1968 and Lightning 1968 size 120mm - 80mm. The one with the national flags should have Spitfire on it instead of Lightning and was fitted to the Spitfire Mk.IV it does not give a year size 125mm - 90mm.

Hi Allan,

I agree with Photobob.

Contact the UK BSAOC and ask for a pair of number 054 transfers. They are the top ones shown in your posting and are Dry Fix transfers suitable for 1968 Lightning side panels.

Don, if gladly do that fit you. Just tell me which version you want. I think they are water slides but will have to confirm.

Mark, sorry its not a trick question. I didn't know what version was for the home market, or if they were different for east coast or west coast?

Wak, well spotted, they are from "classic transfers" I have used them before and find the actual decal to be really good quality. I found an image from domi racer which looks to be of an original with correct orientation of the flag, unfortunately domi racer are no more and I can't find the exact decal either. I'll email classic transfers with both pictures and see what they say.

Cheers Photobob and Ray, that's just the info I was after, I'm also glad since I prefer the yellow flag type. I'll get the through the Bsa OC, and will check my book later today.

Thanks again.

Sorry wak the Union Flag (not jack) on the top decal is the correct way, "Broad to the Mast True to the Last"
The broad top white cross should always be horizontal (broad)to the top of the mast. smirk

Personally, I blame the parents! Even the Yanks know which way their flag goes 'up'! bigt

Al, to 'answer' your question, the top decal, without a doubt grin

I always figured that the only place where the US flag transfer was utilized was in the US (obviously). Everywhere else got the the yellow BSA flag. A no brainer.

That was my initial thought, but we know all the other east/west coast changes that were made, I thought this might have been one of them OR that the US flag on UK bikes could have been some sort of "international friendship acknowledgement" thing. As the copies of the old catalogs don't show much up, and then the half decent photos in my twins resto books seem to be out of focus where the side cover is concerned or they chop the image short.

Another question is tanks, I have the 68-70 US peanut tank and a 69' firebird/B25 tank, I have a poster of a 68' thunderbolt outside the houses of parliament with the peanut tank on - weren't the UK bikes supposed to have the big 4 gallon tank?? I'm confused
help crazy

Don, I'll be ordering these today, let me know if you want any. The side covers are 4 each plus postage

Allan, I'm after 2 with the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack if they are water slides.

I always thought that the bikes names were a tribute to our countries allied efforts during WWII.

Unfortunately the Classic transfers and the BSAOC decal are both vinyl graphics (god only knows why they can't stick to one type, the 1970 decal is a water slide on the covers and vynal on the tank, the 68' is a water slide on the tank)

That would make perfect sense and to me shows the close relationship with BSA in the UK and the USA.

I checked the decal in the BSA handbook, the orientation of the UK flag is the same as the classic transfers item. Also with the BSAOC I have to send a cheque, this is such a lengthy process especially as the hot weather has spurred me into painting this bike. by the time a cheque clears we will be having a typical "British summer" again. "CT" has a sensible idea of being able to pay by card, albeit that the transfers are a little bit dearer in the first place.

Many thanks again for all your help

If they're vinyl I'll have to pass.
My faded waterslides with the BSA flag will have to do for now.

Thanks,

All the transfers from the VMCC that I've bought online have all been water-slides. smile

Gees,
Now I am agreeing with Dick.
Always get decals from VMCC as they only do 100% reproductions.
If the original was water slide or even varnish transfer, then that is what they make & sell.
