Can anyone tell me if this is the correct clutch basket for my 71 firebird scrambler engine? The basket I pulled out of my engine does not look like the image in my parts book.

No that is an early basket, goes with the early 4 spring clutch. If this was in it, lines up and works ok, it just represents an earlier model part being used. Does it have the 4 spring centre? As it to is a little different. I run a 4 spring centre to get more spring pressure with a hotted engine, but its modified and used with a later style basket.

Hey thanks for the reply Mark, No it still runs a 3 spring pressure plate. Do you happen to know how early as I have a 67 parts book that doesn't show the one pictured either.

With the set up the way it is the clutch sprocket (basket) wont come off till you pull the clutch hub.

I have a spare clutch sprocket that is the correct part but wonder is there any benefit to running the earlier sprocket?

My 65 book shows the 4 spring and my 66 book has the 3 spring.

So is there any harm in using the earlier basket or should I switch to the later basket of which I have 2 to chose from. Wondering why in the hell its in there in the first place if there is no benefit.

Was this engine running? I had both types of clutches and I found that the early basket would not fit with the three-bolt hub. The early basket has a raised area in the center, and the four-bolt hub is narrower front-to-back, presumably to accomodate that raised area. Perhaps some modification was done on your hub to make it work.

Yes the bike was running but the timing side bush end play meassured .0055 so it was time for a rebuild.
Ihave the 3 and 4 bolt hub at home and will compare them when I get home in the morning as Im at work now. Thinking I will go back with the basket thats supposed to be in there.

Ellephino! All I know is that the basket pictured above came out with 6 clutch plates. And before I tore her down the clutch worked flawlessly. But none the less Im going to put back in what is supposed to be in there. Thanks for the reply's all.

Now I have to figure out why there is an earlier crank in this engine! Anyone know if there were any other changes other than the trimmed down crank?
