Now then.

Guys. chaps. *Gordon* ....

This 'ere plan for 2014.... I have a little concern. I've noticed that the date for THIS year's TSMR has only just been set, and if the same applies NEXT year, as in the actual dates aren't known until, like, the new year, THAT will throw a big spanner in the works.

Thing is, me and the girls (I'm leaving THEM in NYC whilst *I* go playin' with bikes)and I'm pretty sure Kev too, can't wait until the new year to book vacation. We'll need to book time off THIS year, or there's no guarantee we'll get the dates we want? Plus we gotta sort out flights, and loads of other schmozzle, and flights are LOADS cheaper if booked WELL in advance!

So, I guess what I'm asking is, can the dates for next year be fixed later THIS year?

If not, I may have to switch to some other event where the dates are known earlier ... like Brits on the Hill ... or ... or ... whatever. I AM coming over. You can bet yo' lil' bippy on THAT.

Wot you reckon?

G.

Graham,
I think we have had this event on the same weeked for most every year. Gordon is the boss man on these kinds of decisions, but it certainly seems possible.

Graham, sorry for the slow reply. I didn't see this thread until Mr Mike answered you.

We can set a date this year for the 2014 ride if it will help.

We have two choices....May 16-18 or May 23-25

Would one of these work better for you?????

The reason we don't pick a date the year before is because there's a lot going on in the area and it can effect the ride. We wait until "they" announce their schedules and we set ours around them. BUT.....we'll work it out some way or the other for 2014....no worries.

Here's an example of what we can run into if we don't have a "plan"

Hikers Parade in Damascus, VA

Most of the time, we ride down this road....and have had to wait until it cleared some years. I try my best to avoid it nowadays. We'll have to backtrack a little this year to miss it. BUT...when your here I want you to see/stop at the "ridge" just out of town...so we'll deal with the parade if it works out we're on the same weekend as they are.

You know, I've never really minded dealing with the Damascus parade, for some reason. The college graduation thing, now that's a clutch-burning, battery-draining, engine-overheating pain and I'm glad we miss it, but the Damascus crowd is a bit of Americana, with fire engines and cheerleaders and policemen on horses ... I don't mind shutting off for a minute and then weaving out of town ....

OK, I admit it, I'm addicted to brake fluid.

But I can stop any time I want.

I hear ya Lannis.....things sort of changed when we lost the restaurant in Mountain City. I REALLY liked taking the group photo at the "ridge".

I think it's something I'd like Graham and Kev to see.

I can live with the parade....we've done it before and it really doesn't last that long.

Not real sure how I'll work it out this year....thinking about backtracking like we did last year and doing 421 backwards.

I'm going to need a ride leader again this year. Mr Mike's not feeling up to snuff. I've put out a couple of feelers and I'm sure somebody will step up.

Take care and we'll see ya in May.....Gordon

Okay....I wrote "We have two choices....May 16-18 or May 23-25"

But, there are several regulars on the ride that do not like us having the event on Memorial Day weekend. I figure it's because of the extra traffic on the roads that weekend.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo........that pretty much puts back to just one choice, May 16-18 2014.

Which is the weekend we've held the ride for several years now.

Hope this helps....let me know if there's anything else I can do to make it easier for you guys.

I Actually spoke to Graham t'other day... We had a nice conversation and sure are lookin' forward to this! Is is a part of getting older, that you plan things out in advance like this? blush Never done that before, typically things are more last minute than all this! laughing

Kev, hope you can make it, too my friend!

Is there a date for the BSA International Rally at Alex's Northern California Ranch of Motorcycle Largess yet? I've heard rumors of the 2014 TSMR happening first and then setting off for California...

I hadn't heard that one. I assume that would throw a monkey wrench into Graham and Kev's plan to be here on the date Gordon has set. It occurred to me (on the missing thread) that it would be possible to make it back in time for Blowing Rock. Hardships are in place for overcoming. Did you see my invitation to join us if you can stand a slower pace?

So the 2014 BSA Rally happens before the 3TMR??? I missed the invite Bill. I've been busy lately and with the Alan Gill BANHAMMER flying about...what was it?

Holy Moly http://www.bsaocnc.org/rally/IntlRally.htm

It starts May 2 and runs through May 9th and the TSMR is on...can you say Ironbutt Crosscountry rides? I knew you could.

http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=16

OK - So this is about 6000 miles of riding to get to the TSMR. ( *wow* *yikes* )
Well that is at least a set of tires....Michelins of course.

Well that would be true but I spect not many could pull it off. Our plan has been for young Mr. Strain to tow a trailer out. Share driving time so he could ride some. Obvious benefit is in case of breakdown. What? 40-50-60-y-o British bikes break down? Potential making up of time/interstate blasting if necessary. Haven't spoken with any who have shown interest lately but I am fairly certain a small group will come together. The thing being in May will hamper some no doubt. MikeG from up in N.H. can, I hope, overcome that disadvantage. He being unretired unlike Ben and me. Mr Snowbeard mentioned joining with some group, meeting somewhere near Colorado. Why not ours? Being early May a southern route seems practical. I'm thinking old highways when possible. Anybody interested just needs to pick a place to meet. From the East it could be my place or Ben's. Any where else the ubiquity of cell phones can get us together. See you at Blowing Rock...

Boys????????? I asked Graham if that date would work for him. There are several reasons why that date was picked and I did it early because I was asked to.

Looking that far ahead....as far as the TSMR goes is a tough call.

Looks like you have 7 days to get back.....we could move the TSMR to the next weekend...Memorial Day weekend if nobody has a problem with it....but Graham asked for the date to be cast in stone so he could make plans...and I can't do that if we keep changing plans. I REALLY doesn't matter to me....I'm not going to the west coast.

Hope it works out for everybody............Gordon

Matters not to me Gordon. There are things I can do to ride a bike to the west coast that are not available to most other riders. And seven days back to the east coast is plenty of time. My first IBA ride was JAX to SDO which I did in 44 hours and 36 minutes.

For me its just a matter of if the stars align to get the time off.

Hey guys.

Still plenty of time to make plans this end, so If y'all want to knock it back a week, or two or three, you go right ahead!

What I asked, was for the dates to be confirmed this year, rather than early next year, so's we can book vacation, flights etc ....

I guess that as long as we know by, say OCTOBER, we'll be fine! I'm watching this thread, so knock yourselves out and find a date that suits folks better?

Cheers!

Yeah man...that's why I'm sayin southern rte. Yer working on a BSA aren't you? Join us in, say, Miami? Miami Okla.

Gordon, it's up to you. I know you try to consider everybody's issues but at some point you make the day and we adapt. And I agree that 7 days is enough to get back. The problem will be more with time off for some won't it?

Bill....I wouldn't have a problem with moving it to the next weekend. There just was a time when I was asked to not have it on memorial day weekend. We would miss "trail days" and that's a plus in my book. Let me ask Ms M when she gets back to see it that's a problem (I had told her we were doing the other date).

If we did move it ahead, that would give everybody 14 days for return and regroup. But then again....I'm not sure how long Graham and Kev plan on being here???????????

We'll keep talking it up and ask again at this years ride. I'd say that at least 90% of the people involved will be there this year....we can work it out to try to fit as many people's schedule as possible.

Nothing worth doing is easy......Gordon

Me, G & [possibly?] K attending TSMR in 2014, and I'm ramrodding the logistics betwixt here & there... for us 2 or 3.
The BSA International is a whole 'nother matter, not of interest to me personally, I assume not to them either?

As far as I know, Graham has about 10 days to 2 weeks on U.S. soil?

Tom, I had that impression too. But we'll work with you guys to make it easier on all three of you. Just let me know what will work and we'll work it out.

2 weeks really isn't much time when your talking about a country that is over 3000 miles wide. Okay, unless your talking about Semper (aka Bill) or Richrd (aka no ass) those fellows aren't human. laughing

I'll make sure you stay in the loop....pun intended...and as far as I'm concerned you pick which weekend will work best with yall's (doncha just love that word?) plans.

Gordon....who the only Owners Club he belongs to is the TRIUMPH OWNERS CLUB!!!!!!! what's up with that?????

OK Not sure if decisions have been made on the date for 2014 but it might be best on the 16th - 18th weekend for some. That some being Shaun. As he only wants to take off 3 weeks give or take a few days. If it happens memorial day then he will be out cause thats too many weeks to stay in our fine country. 1 week to get to CA - 1 for the BSA rally and 1 to get to the TSMR. Then a day or two to get back on the big pigeon home. Already pushing his limit but doable I think. So if that suits everyone else I vote for the weekend of the 16th.... (Tell me if my calculations are off please.)

Wade, nothing's cast in stone and I can schedule it when all the UK fellows want it. We'll work around whatever helps things go as smooth as possible.

The weekend of the 16th and 18th works with everything else I have to consider.

Take care...The Skipper (aka Gordon)
