I am assembling the tach rev counter drive on my t 140D 1979 and I am curious why there are no threads in the bottom of the drive to accomodate a threaded plug as illustrated in the parts manual. Does anyone know why my unit has no threads ? Were the original drives fitted with a pressed in plug ? If so does anyone have a picture and part number of the plug. without the plug the drive to the cable just falls out

It should have a thread, well at least the 2 T140Ds I have owned had threads. Heres a few pics of mine, including running a tap through the c/casing to freshen up the l/h thread







The plug in pic 3 has a thread in it

The T140 71-7011 tacho drive had a 71-2481 "Welch washer" and 71-7012 "thrust cap" ('77-'78) or 71-2481 "spacer" (71-2475 drive '73-'76) .

It would appear that the parts that I am missing from my assembly are the Thrust cap 71-7012 and the sealing washer 70-7351. These some how retain the drive for the cable. The drive from the crankcase to the tach housing is complete and operational. I am intersted to know how this thrust cap is held in the tach body. Any ideas ?

71-7143 Driving gear end plug
60-3355 O Ring.......
These are the part numbers listed for the 1979 T140, and the end plug should screw in. It may be you have an earlier tacho gearbox fitted showing just a plug and welch washer.

Heres my question...What is a welch washer. Is it just a form of circlip or what..

The thrust washer can be substituted by two pennys. The Welsh plug can be substituted by using a nickle.

On teh way to Mid-Ohio my T140 tach drive fell apart. I noticed the tach stopped working and then I noticed oil was drooling out of my Triumph. Oh woe is me! I figured rather than turn around I would ride to Mid-O and find expert help. I did. Fixed it on teh side of the camp road and until now I forgot about the fix.

I went looking for the proper parts, when I found them I told the vendor how I fixed my bike. He said they use two pennys and a nickle at the shop because it works better. The real parts went back in his bin.

The nut holding teh drive is reverse thresd.
