at long last i have some sliders for my project and will have the rolling chassis done in a couple of weeks.......i am using triumph type shuttle valve forks with A65 tubes...the sliders i got came with a piece in the bottom that looks like a slender cone...the bolt that holds it goes through the bottom of the slider,,,how is this piece reassembled??? i see it has a slot and the drain plug on the side has a protuberance.....

Does the cone piece not have a hex on the bottom? You should be able to use a deep well socket to tighten it. The cone is to cut off the oil flow through the shuttle as the fork approaches bottom.

no hex....it's smooth but has a slot cut in the side of the base...i'm thinking the protuberance on the drain plug engages the slot but how?

What you have is the early type cone piece. It is held by the drain plug. The later type that you need have a hex and use a different bolt at the bottom. You also will need new drain bolts as they are shorter.

No, you need 2each of part 97-2090, 97-1062,97-2126,97-3893,97-3894. Nothing else will work.

Yup, problem is, the cone for the early non-shuttle valve forks is too fat and won't fit inside the hole in the shuttle valve. I suppose you could turn them down if you had access to a lathe, but in the end, I would just get the proper bits.

raf; It sounds like you have the bottem bits for the BSA rod damper system.

The tube would look like this one if it is BSA.

Check the length of the backing plate peg before you start ordering parts.

Raf...RPM is right, the ones you have are for the 68 damper rod forks.

One thing ive wondered about them is how exactly does the oil not leak out through the allen head bolt that hold the cone? Does it just rely for sealing on the assembly parts being a tight steel to steel fit since there is no oil seal shown in parts diagram?

this thread has parts book pics of 68 and latter shuttle valve forks

Ig, I think Raf has some pre-shuttle valve triumph legs. They used a much fatter restrictor pin (cone), but are otherwise pretty much the same as the shuttle valve forks.

If they are truly off a 68 Triumph, the backing plate will have minimal engagement with the peg on the slider. If you use the BSA spacing on the triple clamps that is. You have to put everything together to be sure, especially if you have the short Tri axle.

Triumph had the shuttle valve-type forks before '69, except they didn't have shuttle valves. They act kind of like the pre-damper rod BSA forks with pretty minimal rebound damping.
