Here's an interesting review of the book from the Civentry Telegraph whose predecessor, the Coventry Evening Telegraph initially broke the news of Meriden's closure the workforce just prior to Poore's meeting with them.

Motorbooks International usually handle Veloce titles. If they're unhelpful then buy from www.amazon.co.uk or www.ebay.co.uk . Both have full availability, will post worldwide and accept Paypal.

Don't bother with amazon.com or eBay.com if they've missed the boat and not stocked up yet.

That said, it could be embargoed by the distributor pending their scheduled release date after magazine reviews etc ?

I received my copy today so I guess US Customs has released the book as mine was ordered on on Amazon Sept 15. I was impressed with the weight of the book (weighed out like a textbook) and the binding.

Have not read Shooting Star, but will put it on the list.

There has been a lot written about British Industry about the period from the end of the Second World War to 1974. While most agree that BSA's fall was on the shoulders of management, compelling cases have been made about the unwillingness of the City (UK's Wall Street) to invest in UK manufacturing and the emphasis away from educating a manufacturing based work force. The UK business was about to become a become service based. When you start reading about this period in the UK it has a lot of parallels with what we are going through in our auto industry.

1974 being significant because of the Arab oil Embargo of 1973-1974, where crude oil went from $10 a barrel to $50, and the stock market in the UK plunged. In the same period the coal unions in the UK went on strike crippling UK industry. If Norton wasn't hurt financially by the loss of Meriden and forming of the cooperative, the resulting three day work week, brought on by the lack of coal and the price of fuel oil, must have just about finished them off.

While I have been dismissed by some who believe emotions have waned among the people involved with the early days of the cooperative, there are those who are still unable, or unwilling, to talk about those times. If I have my facts right, I believe this is one reason there is so little information in John's book about the formation and early years of the cooperative. It was telling to some, who didn't show up at the 50th Bonneville Reunion.

I have had Mick Duckworth interviewing people on both sides of the Pond and it looks like he is ready to give us an article that will come as a surprise to many. He spent a week in Baltimore interviewing Bob Myers and reading through his extensive collection of information about his discussions with US dealers, Christopher Chataway, Minsister of Industry at the time, Dennis Poore, Leslie Huckfield, Dennis Johnson and other Triumph workers before the idea of a cooperative was even thought of. He has since met with several of the original workers and their representitives. He has promised to have the first article ready for the next magazine.

As many of you know we have been interviewing as many of the living Triumph workers for the past ten years as we can. I had the privilege of having Arthur Jakeman come buy our warehouse for a short visit this month. He has always been one of my hero's. You know, the talented quiet guy in the back room who actually does all the work. While his hands prevent him from turning wrenches, he is as sharp as a tack! Not bad for an octogenarian.

Excellent!! I heard Bob (and a number of others) speak at the B.E.M.C. at Butler's Orchard in 2008. Thirty to forty years have passed, and you could STILL hear the passion in their voices for their chosen profession/livelihood...

Got my copy of Rosamond's book yesterday too....gonna crack it open right after I finish Krakaeur's book about Pat Tillman...

Cheers,

Steve

If it helps, I , for one, am certainly not dimsissing your views at all which are always the most respected, informative and compelling !

That said, it is dissapointing others are not as fothrcoming as yourself, whether it be through distress- and John R did tell me he found writing about such times very emotionally hard indeed- or through simple disinterest. This leaves the way open for myth-makers and speculators to tailor facts to suit the story they wish to tell.

That is why John R's book is THE most important book on the co-op because it is a true first-hand account, unadulterated by journalists who may be tempted tailor the words of others to suit the story they wish to sell, sorry, tell...

The reason the referred-to early co-op negotiations are not set out in any detail was simply because John R was not witness to them and as such the first-hand nature and credibility of his account would have been compromised. If he'd been there , he'd give us the details. Fortunately, he was there for pretty much everything else - hence the critical importance of this history.

Classic Bike Guide, about a half-dozen years ago, related how Denis Johnson was going to write a book on the Co-Op formation but perhaps pre-empted/ spolit this by instead publishing his account over two-issues... I doubt the attraction to publishers of re-heated material although I wonder if Denis was warned of that beforehand ...

It may be emotionally trying for the authors but first-hand histories are so very important. They are not perfect but the best ones- as John R's is- are as near to it as we will ever get.

John Rosamond and John Nelson will both be at the Edward Turner Blue Plaque unveiling on Sunday 24th October giving speeches, Tony Benn is likely also be there too as are a good number of triumphs, daimlers and maybe an Ariel or two !

Anthony Wedgewood Benn !

Tig: I am sorry, but I have taken the option to remove your comments. We understand that Mr. Benn does not garner favor with everyone, but this is a forum about motorcycles, not politics.

Now please, don't get upset with me... as it has been deemed by a higher authority that we keep politics off the forum.

I under stand where you are coming from but primary source information is heavily biased. In a primary document you may or may not know the author's bias up front. With a researched piece written by a historian or journalist they are pretty forthcoming with their bias or point of view right up front. You can accept or dismiss the work right out of the gate. I haven't read the book but I will soon, so this has no bearing on John Rosamond's point of view and honesty with the reader concerning it.

The first of a series of articles about the period when the Triumph Bonnevile was saved from the scrape heap organize and written by Mick Duckworth has appeared the the latest issue of Vintage Bike the newsletter of the Triumph Inernational Owners Club. This is information which has never before been brought to the public covers the period from the point where Minister of Industry at the time, Christopher Chataway gave BSA, and Triumph in the bargain, to Dennis Poore and will take it through quite a bit later when Tony Benn shows up on the scene.

WOW!

i did a Google Search on Bob Myers,
after some commentary made [by certain gentlemen] in Wade's "A Fool And His Money" thread, and lookie what popped up! i missed this when it went down in 09 but it was sure worth the read now!
the above discussion is/was quite enlightening, i must say. grand social commentary at the very least, and a subject near to the heart as well, i might add.

M4E,
i had attempted to send you a PM (and so the *shout*) to point out some aspects of Wade's thread but you are way out in front of me on this, by a couple years or so.

the folks who frequent this site, and their
experience/info/knowledge never cease to amaze me.

THANKS guys!

Tom

Where is it possible to get a read of the 2009 article that was in Vintage Bike? I missed this thread at the time too.

I don't know if I was being unduly presumptive but as you kindly sent me the first part and I imagined the second would follow too ! I didn't mind but did subscribe to VB although I missed the Myers series in question.
