When you have exhausted your search, try taking a part to your local auto paint supplier, and let them take a shot with the color camera {photo spectrometer}. You may be pleasantly surprised with the result. You should be given every paint type match available, from enamel to base/clear/urethane.

Make sure the part is very clean and shiny, compound and polish to bring up the freshest pigments in the old paint.

I paint cars, and occasionally cycles, and have used color cameras with good success.

GFlash,

I'm not sure of the correct paint code for your red. I did something similar to what the previous poster suggested, only I went by my somewhat vague memory. Went to local NAPA dealer, picked out a red and bingo had what I wanted. Took the finished product to an old BSA dealer and the first thing he said was "I love that red". The bike is not intended for concours purposes but as a daily rider (just under 1,000 miles this season). Just make darn sure that it is coated inside with a top quality tank sealer compatable with fiberglass or you'll end out with a tank that will bubble or blister in a very short period of time, thanks to the new gasolines.

Best of luck.

The Mandarin Red (an orange red) on the Hornet tanks is not paint. It is a part of the original gel coat.

Skeet, your red tank and side covers look close to the '67 Cherokee Red, unless the camera is messing with us (red is a tough color to match with a camera). I like that red too.

Hallo,

I have a problem, I have no tank in mandarin red
where I can get the colour.

I although think the colour on the pitured tank is not mandarin red ( mandarin red is an orange).

Re: West coast Hornet restoration:

I'm sure that you have been asked this before, but does anyone have the paint formula for "Cherokee Red"? I am a bit confused as to how many different reds were used on the east and west coast Hornets ... Manadarin Red is the orange-red, Cherokee is the dark/ruby red. Did they offer the red-red (same red as the spitfire) on the east coast model as well?

Thanks

The cherokee red is covered in the great long Hornet thread. I know Gary and I each posted info on that. The mandarin red, I had some paint matched to an original tank but don't know if I kept any kind of formula details. I'll check and see.

Al,

Cherokee Red as used on the '67 Hornet (both east and west coast models - same tank) is also listed as the color on the '67 Spitfire.

As Leon said, there should be formula details (Cherokee Red) in the long Hornet thread. I have an image of the formula label on the can.
