Hello,

I am restoring a 850 Commando from 1973 at the moment and I am wondering whether the pinstripes on tank and side panels are original. I saw pictures in the brochures and manuals with black painting without pinstripes ("ever popular traditional black livery").

http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Brochures/1970/74NortonBrochure.pdf

So my question is: Have they been sold with and without pinstripes at tank and side panels?

Regards,
Ralf

So you need to be looking at the 1973 brochure.

So, do your Commando's stripes the match the brochure pinstripes?

Are you under the impression that the black Roadster above the caption in the '74 brochure has no pinstripes? If so, then I think you need to take a closer look?

850 models normally had the pinstripes as they are shown in both '73 and '74 brochures. Note that the Interstate models had no panel stripes.

Thanks,

Yes you may be right, there could be some pinstripes on the tank. So you think, that all black Commando's had the pinstripes ?

Ralf

The tank (and panel) stripes are undoubtedly there, although somewhat difficult to see on the tank in that photo without some photo enhancement, and yes, the standard black 850 Roadster and Interstate colour schemes always had the gold pinstriping as shown in the brochures as far as I know.

Yes, I can see the stripes. The interstate tanks mostly have the stripes. But I was wondering, because you see the roadster often without stripes. The yellow and red-orange versions were always without stripes anyway. So I question whether all black roadster have really been delivered with stripes. I think the brochure mustn't have been a warranty for that.

Edit: Especially the fibreglass tanks which are much common in this time seem to be often without stripes.

Ralf

I think you are misleading yourself slightly, as certain 750 Roadster model colours had tanks without stripes, also the 750 models had no side panel stripes, however even the black 750 models had the single "D" tank stripe.

Thanks,

I think you are right. I suppose the fibreglass tanks are such often to be seen without stripes, because they often have to be repainted.
Nice stripes at the girl as well ...

By the time the first 850 models were introduced in early 1973, the fibreglass tanks were being phased out due to new safety legislation. If you check the specifications in the 1973 brochure, it lists the capacities of the steel tanks for the 850 Roadster and Interstate, only the Hi-Rider still appears to have a fibreglass tank.

Hi,

I have golden pinstripes on my Triumph. That looks really good as the Triumph has a two tone painting. But Triumph had always a more extensive paint scheme on their bikes. Norton - especially the Commando - is known with a simple single-color design. And I think a single-color painting without pinstripes is the best look for a commando - even in black. On the other hand it is nice to have the original look. I am also considering to take another color, but I like black for the Commando. At the moment I am tending to black with golden decals and without pinstripes.

Regards,
Ralf

You have done an excellent job, Ralf, it looks good.

Did it go OK?

Yes, it runs fine and smooth. It has got a top end rebuid as well. But today I recognized a small crack at left exhaust thread. One of the PO's had repaired the threads. Is it something to worry about ? At the moment it makes no trouble.

Thanks,
Ralf

It's rather difficult to tell from the photo?
However, the exhaust thread looks as if it's been repaired with an insert, so provided the insert is tight in the head and doesn't start to become loose, then I wouldn't worry too much. Just check that the crack doesn't spread any further.

Thanks - that's what I already decided to do. As long as it runs good without any problem I will do nothing. For the moment I want to ride it after all the work. And the weather gets warmer now in Germany.

@Alan: The timing has been corrected. But I don't want to renew the pipes. They are still good.
