Has anyone recently received a dating certificate from BSAOCUK? If so, what was the turnaround time? Did it come from Steve Foden?

I assume he is still the contact for them? I sent a post requesting a certificate 6 weeks ago (October 14), but I have not received any reply. I double checked the e-mail address and it appears correct. No rush needed, but nary any response.

Hi Gary...

I'm also currently awaiting a dating certificate. Been waiting myself for a couple of weeks. We have to remember that he is a volunteer and I'd think with the recent bad weather we are having, he's probably quite busy.

Nice selection of BSAs you have!

LJ,
Thanks for the info. The last certificate I received took 6 months. I was hoping that was fluke, but maybe not. Not sure what the relationship is with the weather and the certificates is unless his real job is something like a snow plow driver or similar. Maybe he is a weatherman.

You also have a nice stable of bikes. Hard to own just one.

Thank you!

That's quite a 'thought provoking' comment, I had to sit and think about that...

Actually it was far easier to own just the one BSA, my A10, there was never much to do. Now I own a few I'm always kept busy and at times it is hard as I like them all to be running. The variation is nice though.

I applied for my last certificate in Sept 2010 and it arrived about 4 weeks later, the cheque was then cashed after another 4 weeks. The cretificate was signed by Steve Foden.

Dont forget the BSAOC guys are not doing this work for money, its purely a part time hobby. I guess they fit the work in at evenings & weekends.

Given the above and christmas post delays, I guess it could take a few more weeks to arrive frown

It would be a nice convenience if a copy of the factory production books were here in the US. I would liked to have electronically scanned the pages of the books while I was in the UK in September.

LJ.,
Did you receive your dating certificate?

Another month has passed and still "no joy" on receiving the dating certificate. It's been almost 3 months now without a response. I think I'm jinxed.

Bonkers,
Go to the BSAOC UK website

http://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/home.html

and hit on "Machine Regestering & Dating", then follow their instructions.

Gary, did you ever get your dating certificate?

There is a guy on eBay selling a neat '39 BSA 250, in his auction ad he says he sent off for the certificate from this Foder guy a year ago or so, never got it, never got a response to his emails. He is essentially calling this guy a thief, recommends nobody use the "service".

Does BSAOC know this is going on? Brian Pollit was a bit slow, but never heard any complaints about him or the service outside of that. I doubt that the Club wants a reputation for theft, if you're not getting results you should let them know!

Steve,

I sent another post to Mr. Foden on January 4. I received reply on January 12. In the reply was: "...it must have slipped through...". He asked for some additional information, of which I replied on January 13. Since then I have not received any contact, either by via e-mail, or snail mail.

I am very perplexed that they offer the service, but do not respond in what I consider a timely manner. (and yes I am aware it is all done voluntarily by unpaid OC representatives). The last one took 6 months to receive; this one, so far is at 3.5 months.

Hi Gary,

I'm sure you know more about this than me but I hope I can add something useful.

I had my bike's shipping records checked at the Science Museum. This was back in 2002 and maybe they dont offer this service anymore. I know you went recently and checked records and maybe it was the ones they hold. If not you should follow up with them. (Just tell me if I'm being a bit slow here and stating the blindingly obvious) I guess I depends on if you need a 'dating certificate' or are just seeking confirmation of details for your own information.

They confirmed frame and engine numbers and original destinations, build dates, despatch dates.

They were at one stage making records available to suitably qualified individuals. That may have stopped also??

HTH

Ray

The VMCC seem to give the best service, having paid librarians helps.

Yes, the VMCC is very good. I have had personal contact with Annice, their librarian. Very helpful.

Larry,
If you are referring to the BSAOCUK, Brian indicated years ago, when asked, that it did not matter.

Hi Gary,

Yes, Science Museum in London. The contact I had with them was through their Library.

PM me if you need further info.

Cheers

Here is a reply I received today regarding the Science Museum records. VMCC has their records now. I will say they replied quickly, within two days!

"Dear Randy C. Pigford

The Science Museum Library no longer operates a Motorcycle Enquiry Service and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The BSA Owners Club operates a machine dating service for a fee. Please see their website for details and a contact form:

Additionally, the Vintage Motor Cycle Club operates a dating service (fee payable) and now possess the records formerly held at the Science Museum. For machine register enquiries please contact their library:

Good one Randy!,

That's solved a couple of puzzles and everyone now knows the status of the Science Museum Archives and information service.
Looks like we all know where to go now.
