We need to figure out what is going on with the forum.
To much downtime lately and to much error messages.
Please reply and cut and paste the fault messages you get in the nearby future.

Thanks
Morgan

Morgan -

No fault message, but when I try to display the forum or try to post a reply, the system goes away and "sits" for about 2-3 minutes before completing. Used to take 2-3 seconds, so a factor of 50+ degraded in performance.

OK, I admit it, I'm addicted to brake fluid.

But I can stop any time I want.

No errors just very slow. My guess is the ISP is overloaded on this server or 2 many VM's if it's virtual.

Wow. I just did a trace route, and it is incredibly slow in the hops.

So for those complaining of a slow connection, you may have a T1 which connects you to the backbone, but if the backbone is slow, you are still going to be slow.

This seems to be the case right now.

It is coincident that Morgan is working on his website problems at the same time, this is happening. Makes it harder. More variables.

I've noticed the same thing as Skeet, seems to run OK very early in the AM (for me here on the West Coast), then abruptly slows way down.

You guys can all do this to check.

Every OS contains apps that check network connections. The two to use are ping and trace route, sometimes expressed as tracert. smile The time is expressed as MS.

For example a recent ping was this:

Ping has started ...

PING britbike.com (209.237.150.20): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 209.237.150.20: icmp_seq=0 ttl=242 time=231.492 ms
64 bytes from 209.237.150.20: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=813.904 ms

--- britbike.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 33% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 231.492/522.698/813.904 ms

Firstly these ms are high. Secondly a packet was dropped. Not good. Thirdly, I have noticed that the results are varying a lot today. Sometimes very snappy and sometimes very very slow.

It is fun to speculate on the reason why. Cyber attack> Prevention from cyber attack? Flooding? Two many videos from Japan.? We may never know. It took many months for it to be revealed in the news that China ( or just someone in China ) had conducted an attack which re-routed all information through China first. And then only a small story, hidden in the back pages.

One problem that is happening with our Website is that Morgan's host keeps changing the name, of the server which hosts the site. Thus they are doing internal housekeeping with their internal network, which makes things even harder for Morgan.

Here are the results of a tracert. The first few hops left out. Note the long MS's:

3 s8-0-2.hsa2.bos1.bbnplanet.net (4.24.246.41) 3392.46 ms 1087.09 ms 607.373 ms

Compare the above tracert resutls to these, in terms of the ms. This one was very snappy:

3 s8-0-2.hsa2.bos1.bbnplanet.net (4.24.246.41) 133.939 ms 119.091 ms 130.94 ms
4 ge-4-2.car2.boston1.level3.net (4.69.142.217) 143.184 ms 127.99 ms 122.527 ms
5 ae-2-5.bar2.boston1.level3.net (4.69.132.250) 135.373 ms 132.483 ms 124.42 ms
6 ae-8-8.ebr1.newyork1.level3.net (4.69.140.98) 134.021 ms 127.484 ms 133.563 ms
7 ae-10-10.ebr2.washington12.level3.net (4.69.148.50) 137.713 ms 128.993 ms 166.886 ms
8 ae-1-100.ebr1.washington12.level3.net (4.69.143.213) 157.26 ms 147.878 ms 147.572 ms
9 ae-6-6.ebr1.atlanta2.level3.net (4.69.148.105) 142.776 ms 150.921 ms 152.501 ms
10 ae-71-71.csw2.atlanta2.level3.net (4.69.148.246) 173.915 ms 153.679 ms 155.191 ms
11 ae-21-52.car1.atlanta1.level3.net (4.69.150.67) 156.107 ms 150.972 ms 150.44 ms
12 interland-i.car1.atlanta1.level3.net (4.78.208.106) 153.22 ms 151.696 ms 163.839 ms
13 209.237.128.94 (209.237.128.94) 150.874 ms 154.521 ms 153.675 ms
14 1996990.sites.myregisteredsite.com (209.237.150.20) 150.339 ms 149.681 ms 152.705 ms

And this ping which was very successful:
Ping has started ...

PING britbike.com (209.237.150.20): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 209.237.150.20: icmp_seq=0 ttl=242 time=1645.2 ms
64 bytes from 209.237.150.20: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=1250.42 ms
64 bytes from 209.237.150.20: icmp_seq=2 ttl=242 time=1114.18 ms

--- britbike.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 1114.18/1336.6/1645.2 ms

Yes the ms are high, but all packets sent and received. Now imagine how confused a database server can get when information is being lost. Like static on the telephone. Can ya hear me now? laughing

Which makes the whole concept of "cloud computing" at least when it comes to databases, extremely problematic, IMHO.

And as you can see, if the packets are dropped, or connection is interrupted, then one can end up with multiple posts of the same thing, because one does not know if it made it or not, and if you have not copied your post to your clipboard you will lose it.

I will delete them later. smile

It occurs to me, that it is sort of like tuning your carburetor. It does no good to just say it is slow. One needs to know/mark the throttle to know which circuit in the carb one is having a problem with.

Hi Morgan,

Don't know if it's any help but, here in GB, the BritBike Forum is normal/fast around 7am but really slow in the evening - say 6pm/7pm. Around the same time as I read this Forum, I also read the Triples On Line forum and the Real Classic Message board; neither of these are slow in the evening.

This evening, I also got one occurrence of:-

"We encountered a problem. The reason reported was

Database error only visible to forum administrators".

Finally, just as a matter of interest, could the speed problem be down to one or more of the adverts. - e.g. US eBay - having a slow response from their site? If it might, would a timeout on advert. site responses prevent them from slowing the Forum?

Hth.

Regards,

Logging in fast.
Yesterday (march 17th) after 14.30 CET it was a disaster to go to the forum. Site homepage was no problem. The parts underneath the buttons in the blue top bar were no problem, exept the forum.

Hi I have a webforum that is connected to MYSQL and it has been so slow or not working properly for weeks now.

Therefore I have disconected some features so it don't have to load to much.

Are you doing some server housekeeping or what is happening???

When can I expect the forum to work properly again?
Please advise

We will provide an update when your ticket status changes.
We appreciate your business. Thank you for being a Web.com customer.
Sincerely,

Interesting Wade's child. That is the same address for server admin, for both sites.

Anyone try e-mailing this guy? laughing

I see. Makes perfect sense once I reread Wade's post. I read it wrongly the first time. thought it was a different site.

March 19th 12.40 CET.
Logging in fast.
Yesterday (march 18th) after appr. 14.30 CET it was almost impossible to go to the forum.

I think during these last few days I see the same thing repeat itself every day.

Is 14.30 / 15.00 CET the time the America's wake up and start working or start logging in with a larger number of people than from Europe?

Hi Morgan,

Woo-hoo, fast as f... Friday evening in GB (as I said before, in the GB evening, it was slower than a D1 Bantam needing a decoke).

Resolved?

Regards,
