I had a chrono speedo overhauled a few ago, and its gone wrong allready ? Ive whipped it apart , and noticed what could be the problem ? but unsure what is correct etc. Has anyone any info /drawings on these speedometers, tachos etc or recommend a first class repairer with good guarantees? cheers
one company I konow in the UK is Gaggs & son. Sorry, I don not know anything about the quality of their work. But I have seen them advertising in the Classic Bike magazine for many years. They seem to be in business for quite a long time. Best regards Phil
Triton Thrasher; link works fine. It reminds us that the Chronometric is basically magic and not mechanical. In the 1950s my father who is a very clever, fix anything type of chap, in his spare time used to fix speedos and tachs for the Les Blow Triumph, BSA and whatever shop in Victoria BC. As I recall they paid him $5 per unit which helped to defray the cost of changing models, normally Triumphs. He had a big box of broken units to find the various parts needed. No, it's mechanical, but very fiddly if you disturb the camshaft and bits.
Part of it runs at a constant speed, through an escapement and slipping clutch. Part of it runs at speed proportional to drive speed. Every 3/4 second or so, the needle pusher is put into gear with the varying speed mechanism for a set very short time. The pusher advances the needle to your new speed if you are accelerating. If you are slowing down, the needle is released to fall back on the pusher.
I atually gave up trying to get reliable drive through cable from the back wheel and now use a push-bike electronic speedo.
