Raf: Yeah it does seem tight, they never realy make it clear if that means total of 1/8 or 1/8 up AND down (1/4 total). Its a feel thing realy becasue there is a big diffrence between "free movement" of 1/8 and "the most you can MAKE it move 1/8"

Hard to expalin but those triplex chains even though they are as strong as sure whip around in the primary and would take huge latteral loads due to whipping about.

I go for around 1/8 up AND down with little pressure to acheive that movement , ie not forcing it just free movement

Hope you can understand what i mean

Ignoramus...thanks..got it.1/8 up from center and 1/8 down 1/4 total up and down from rest.....as some of you'uns might recall i cried several days ago about noise coming from primary cover so i tightened chain and it helped a lot but some whirring hollow-sounding tone is still there......

Mine is making a whole lot of racket now so I'm glad you covered this. Mine is definitely loose based on the measurements discussed.

Now why is it that my adjuster doesn't look anything like the one in the manual?? It's bloody hard to get at too!

Raf:
At the risk of getting jumped on, I found that a heavier oil in case shut up a lot of mechanical noise. I used ATF as an experiment (after discussion on board) and personal preferance couldnt stand it (as an engineer i "over-heard" every little metalic ping) which the ATF did not muffel.
I dumped the ATF after about 500miles and just shoved in some 20/50 casue it was what i had. MUCH quiter. Just need to clear the clutch after its been sitting a day or so ...no big deal, didnt need to clear clutch with ATF. Just couldnt stand the noise.

Mike:
AFAI all the A65 adjuster pads/shoes/ramps or what ever they are callled should be the same. If it is making that much noise make sure the chain hasnt cut trough the bonded lining. Some cheep after market ones combined with poorly finished chain (which has quite sharp edges) can do this. NOt saying its the problem cause obviuosly I havent seen it.

If your primary is way out of adjustment fix it NOW! The adjuster nut should be possible to get onto without removing header pipe (assuming std T bolt pipes) you can get it with a whitworth "goose neck" ring spaner working from underneath the pipe. It's a pig but possible.

It might pay to even pull the cover and have a dammm good look at the chain, if its been run dry or been out of adjustment a while it might ruin your summer. Check there are no cracked off rollers. If one is broken its all down hill from there.

The reason for the fairly small free play is becasue of the weight of the chain and the forces (stain) when a heavy chain whips about out of adjstment. Thats why older bikes used "simplex" (single pitch) chains which were much lighter. eg 1/2 x 5/16 was a comon one, less HP and RPM too obviuosly.

If you pull the cover can you post a pic of adjuster?

Good luck

Raf....try some 20/50 when you reassemble see what you think. U will need to clear the clutch after sitting though....no bigie IMO....will look at your tread about studs.

cant see how 20/50 would hurt since my 72 OIF T120 shares oil with motor and primary just fine

...actually I'm just an idiot sometimes....the chain adjuster was fine it just looked weird to me....once I wiped all the crud and oil off of it it made sense......I adjusted it today and now everything seems to be just fine in that department

Cheers!
Mike
