It's called the cable guide in the parts book. It needs to come out to remove that alternator housing. I tried getting the studs out but they're not budging.

Is there a reason you need to take the alternator housing out?

I'd like to clean behind it. If I can find another one that would be good since it's chipped.

Mines chipped too, but serves its purose. Nobody will ever know if it is clean back there and the primary chain won't care. My 2 cents.

the alternator housing and chaincase are one casting, they dont come apart, no need to remove the cable guide, clean up the end though.
Watch out for a spacer stuck in the ds bearing seal, once you scrub it down , put it in the oven to get the bearing out.

Cases prior to 68 had no cast in alternator support. A removeable support was available in 67 time frame. Prior to that, it was just studs.

So there's no way to remove it?

Vernon , I cant tell from the pic , but if there is a hex at the base of that pipe it should simply unscrew . I've only seen that in the early engines though. I have had that alternator housing out of an engine once , I simply double nutted the studs and removed all three studs and wiggled the housing out . If I had to remove the pipe , and it wasnt threaded in , I would simply use some heat on the aluminum around it , propane should do the job but it might take some time , then with the aluminum expanding faster than the steel it should twist right outta there .
