Dig----------yeah that starting motor is great.[el mirage] But.........i need one like yours as i have noone to help me,
The one you have, and i believe you are right about it staying centered.
Did you see the other one[that was doc z`s]Why would you want the motors to the rollers hooked up separately? I still think i can make one like yours work, and for one person, i will just attach a small ramp up to the rollers for better accesibility.
I am looking around for rollers. the thing will stay under the bike till you turn it off won't it????
I can see where it might launch you out of the garage if you weren't careful>

Bob, yes, mine has a small ramp but its not shown.
Some V8 engines have them geared high torque starter motors.
As soon as i have bike started i select neutral as well as use front brake when starting.

yes-------I have a high torque starter on my 32 ford coupe. It will start that coupe, when that car won't start any otherway[gets a mind of its own]
Did you have any ideas why they would use two motors? You don't need it set up that way.

Somebody further up was talking about tapering the rollers towards the middle? I know it is counter intuitive, but they should be tapered towards the edge (larger dia in the centre). Honest! It is what stops toothed belts coming off apparently flat pulleys - they have a crown in the middle.

Bob,

Having two motors also puzzled me for a while confused . I think the reason is to lessen possibility of tire slip in the case of smooth racing tires on high compression racing engines that are hard to turn over.

One motor may work fine with a lower compression street bike with treaded tires.

my 2c

P.S. Now realize I am all wet on this one. Tried to delete post but couldn't so have to take my lumps I suppose blush

If you go to Doz Intl. they show a variety of starters. Some with single motors for starting speedway bikes. Phil's has two and they are independent of each other but boy do they work!! I think a single motor would have no problem starting high comp. motors.

TGA in England do a snazzy starter with tapered (to the center) rollers. The taper is to keep the wheel in the center of the rollers. The taper towards the edge is a recipe for disaster. But the price is 2000 Stg. Not sure what the current excahnge rate is but its over my head.

Anyone here remember run and bump starts? Well the rollers are the same thing only you are stationary. Spinn the back wheel and bump. No slippage.

I'll throw this up here. Its a Danish friend's nitro Godden firing up on home made rollers.

Pavement has a higher coefficient of friction than do steel rollers. In this regard, have noticed that some rollers do have a high coefficient of friction coating on them to help correct this problem. Not sure how long this lasts though...

The rollers on Phil's starter are smooth. I had no problem firing a 14:1 comp. Weslake. DocZ do rollers coated with some kind of coarse coating. Looked like sand in a fiberglass resin coating. I've seen rollers with non slip floor tape stuck on but wasn't really worth a damn.

Single motor yes, but both rollers driven if you look at it and smooth as well. You don't need any taper as its already built into the Tyre

Heres TGA's offering. I like the rollers and alloy frame but I don't like the price. $2804.35 at todays exchange rate! Sorry about the quality of the photo.

Hi Guys..!

Big Singles often will NOT start with those single starter motor jobs. That is why the twin starter motors exist. The whimpier twins start OK... not great but OK on the single units. BOTH rollers need to be driven or traction is an issue for sure. N.N's tire unit works good, lots of guys "back in the day" used mini bikes or small trail bikes to start their Dirt Track Bikes. Especially since my pal had a TD1-B for a Dirt Track bike... a real pain to get started sometimes...

$2800.00.....thats not a good thing for a rider like me.now that link you gave me, noisey norton. thats a bike starter to behold. it don't show you alot . but may work perfect.I now have some ideas. if you think of anything else please let me know N.N.
i have to build one that i can zip the bike up on, hit a remote button on the wall, and takeoff.it don't have to be pretty, but thats the way i do things.
brit b.............the delete button won't let me wipe out anything, either. Another problem. although things are looking up a tad her lately.on the ole bbf.

Bob, Try doczintl.com That should get you there. Rollers aren't rocket science. I'm looking at a piece of tubing in work that would make a fantastic set.

The TGA starter is a doozy. They had some various shots of it a while back. But thats all they now show. They also do a hand held remote for the starter. It couldn't be to hard to rig up a remote for any starter.

NOISEY NORTON....No they'er not rocket science, Ijust tend to use rocket science when i build something. And that ain't a good thing anymore, once i start a project i put my "all" into it.The tubing has to have bearings running true in both ends,is the biggest hurdle i can see on this deal.I am getting calls now on where to get the things i need. So i will come up with a starter. ...thank noisey norton
