RE: 1964 BSA Lightning Rocket home market 4 gallon gas tank questions.

I have a four gallon home market tank and need some information on the color width/pattern separation to the chrome. I need to tell the chrome plater what is painted and what is chrome. The lightning clubman tank is the same specification.
I am also interested in the correct color for 1964. Was the home market gold like the clubman or mandarin red like the export models. Also did the 1964 home market model have steel side covers like the export model. I do know 1965 is different.

Thanks in advance.
Richard

The parts book references BSA paint code 176 Flamboyant Red with Chrome. The Gold color was only used on Lightning's & Lightning Clubman's (Also Cyclone's & Cyclone Clubman's), which were engines with the A65DC serial number code. A65D's would have been red.

Go to the thread with all of the pictures. On the first page, I have my Lightning Clubman, the tank was an NOS tank when I got my hands on it. I took many pictures and measurements before sending it off to be plated (NOS doesn't mean perfect :eek). My paint guy used the pictures and dimensions to get it back where it needed to be. wbajo or some name like that has also posted pictures of his 65 Cyclone in that thread. His tank looks very good.

I know the early 64's started life with steel side covers. I have never found a definite point that the change occurred, but I believe the switch to fiberglass occurred during 64 model year, probably late. If you frame has the tabs for the side cover brackets welded to the seat support tubes, you use steel, IMO.

I need to tell the chrome plater what is painted and what is chrome.

I was under the impression the whole tank is chromed and then paint applied on top of the chrome. beerchug

From what I have seen the tanks were not polished on the top and lower edges. This gives a good surface to paint on. What I am looking for is an approximate dimension on the top surface. I know it somewhere around 7 inches on the 2.4 gallon tanks, but not sure on the 4 gallon tanks.
Thanks,
Richard

on top of my 64 A65C it is 4.5 " from the center seam to the edge of the pinstripe that is at the back edge of the beading holder I,m not sure if this tank is original to the bike it was the one that came with the bike when I got it. fwiw the tank looks to be newer then the bike The bottom edge looks to be 1 1/8" all across the bottom hth you may want a coupla others checking measurement before you use these measurements beerchug

Thank you aprofit. Just the dimensions I needed. I suspected 8 inches total on the top, looks more like 9.
