are there any upgrade options for the 4 spring clutch? would it benefit from a better press. plate? 7 plate clutch?

There is the possibility of swapping out for a three spring clutch, however I have never done it and it requires some bucks. You will end up with a duplex chain and a more sturdy chainwheel. Never seen one, only heard of it. Alternatively, you can use the existing single strand primary chain and chainwheel and install a six and a half plate clutch such as I have. You get one more friction side and that provides for a easier pull or more grip. Your choice. It's easy to do. Just take a friction plate and remove the friction material from one side. Done deal. If you want a seven plate clutch you'll need to machine off the flange on the clutch hub to get a little more room for the extra plates. If you get a belt drive, read the installation instructions BEFORE you buy one. The MAP belt drive for pre units is very long and involved and requires modifications to your bike you may not want to do. There's one out of England that comes with a modified Suzuki six spring clutch that looks way trick and expensive. There may be more options but these are the ones I know of.

Hey Bill, Sickboi ....
this website is worth a look ...

http://www.triumph-spares.co.uk/

just follow the links to the clutch section, they market some pretty trick looking clutch upgrades. Am sticking with the 'singlex' chain on that p/u 500 I'm putting together and have bought a complete 7 plate clutch conversion from them (clutch basket, plates, pressure plate, springs etc)and will swap out the 4 spring clutch hub to a 3 i have lying around. Will let you know how it fits and will get a few photos.
cheers

are the single and dual row baskets different? could you put a 3 spring center in the single row basket? or what about a dual row basket with a single chain? i like the 7plate clutch and that nice press plate, but i cant find them for the pre unit.

Hi sickboi,
I've done it the other way round. I've got a 4 spring clutch in my T140 basket, so what you're proposing would work.

In the process of making this mod, I was shown a 3 spring hub which had been drilled to form a 6 spring hub. Obviously they'd had to remove and weld up the spider, so not sure how it was expected to be cushed.

Hey Sickboi .... he's got no photos of the p/u clutch basket on his site. Just got them listed as part numbers 57-1549 and 57-1549A ( the light weight anodised alloy version) ... these are for the single row chain as per std pre-unit ... or singlex as he referred to them.
I will be running his clutch kit with a later 3 spring clutch hub.
There is choice available, I believe its possible to fit the duplex clutch in a pre-unit and then theres belt drives .... dont think i'll bother going there!! lol .....
Hey Bob .... I'll be back in Macc in a week or so ... I'll send you a mail through this.
cheers

Yes the grip is ferocious, but you need it with NOS. Only use it for launching anyway......

Hey Steviep,
Send our regards to Free-o. If you see an ornery old bird name of Maggie Davies, that's the wife's aunty. Emigrated there when it was a tenner!
