I have just purchased a Triumph 3ta bathtub model and according to the registration documents it was first registered to Somerset county constabulary in the UK, at the moment the paint colour is all black but according to Roy Baconís book the colour for this model is shell blue, does anyone know if these bikes were painted black in the factory specifically for the police or were they all shell blue?

I have never seen a black one (except my own but it is not original). They were grey silver in '57 and otherwise shell blue. 5TA's were amaranth(sp) which is a maroon.

Entirely possible the coppers had a factory lot sprayed black. Take the tank off and scratch some paint off inside the tunnel. That should reveal all.

Kelvin,

If you haven't already, have you considered going to the Somerset County contabulary station (HQ) and researched their archives, etc.? I would think that the department would have pictures of their force throughout their history and may be able to shed some light on the subject? Also, maybe contacting some retired police officers from that department who rode the motorcycles?

Thanks every one for your input it is most helpful, sorry I have not answered before but I have been working away.

Tinman, I am looking for parts too although I am nearly ready to have the frame powder coated then I can start putting things back together.
