Hastings recommends 45 for their rings.

They also recommend 220 to 280 grit surface finish for all three of their rings types:
a. grey cast iron (because we are using our rings in an air cooled engine ( where it is impossible to get cylinder perfectly round and distortion from mounting hardware is typical, I would use 220),
b. ductile iron and
c. steel rings
(both ductile iron and steel are coated with special coatings to make them compatable with the cast iron cylinder like chrome).

While on the site for Hastings rings, is it possible to make up a ring set for a piston from thier stock items and the careful use of a stone/dremel for the end gaps?

I have written to them and enquired thier minimum order, I might import a few sets for A10's etc and *bay them .
