I am trying to remove/install a new set of fork seals. I have include a few pictures top view and botton view of my existing fork seals. My question is: what part do I need to remove to be able to get the old seals out and the new seals in. The bottom side (where threads are) contains what looks like some sort of conical piece of metal - does this need to be removed/driven out? in the picture it may look like some kind of inner metal piece. The top side (what looks to be a washer with slots in it). It was suggested in a previous post that this piece does not come out and that I should try using a punch from this side and drive the old seal out through the bottom. But the above mentioned metal piece on the threaded end of seal holder is in the way. I am going nuts !! My shop manual does not show any pictures at all for reference. And maybe I am being a. retentive or stupid but I don't want to tear up a new set of seals not knowing what in the heck I am doing. Any help would be much appreciated. First time posting pics - apologize if it doesn't work correclty - but the URL does link to pictures.

Thanks in advance...

If you look at the picture, the cone shaped item your talking about is # 24, the spacer. #23 is the seal. Remove #24 and drive the seal out from the top. Use a thin drift or screw driver through the slots in the seal holder for the tool. Catch the outer rim of the seal and drive it out through the threaded end. To re-install, use a deep wall socket the same diameter as the outer edge of the seal. Sorry for the large pic, but it is much easier to see. When all is well, and you are ready to re- install the seal holder on the lower fork leg, wrap a thin piece of butchers twine once around the bottom thread on the fork lower. This will seal the seal holder to the lower fork leg. Any thread sticking out, burn off with a lighter. Don't tug on it! Duh!

Glad you posted the pictures too. I am still trying to get mine apart. Any tricks to get the chrome sleeve off? Some have suggested heat. I have one damaged and one in great shape, and I don't want to ruin it if I can help it.
Thanks

The tool costs about 22 US. You own a BSA. You probably know someone who owns a BSA. You will be a hero!

Hey John,
Can I borrow your tool?
Just kidding. The damaged one no longer has the ring to get the tool to mount. I will probably buy that tool, and many others, in the coming months.

Bruce,

I know that I mentioned applying heat to the chrome seal holder a couple of posts back. I failed to add that I also stood the fork tube on end, took a block of wood and placed it on the leading edge of the chrome seal holder, and then gently tapped the chrome seal holder down the fork tube. This was like a last resort - but it actually worked well. Hope this helps !!
