Does anyone know if there is a replaceable light bulb in the ammeter of a 69 Lightning and if so its part number?

A Gentleman does not concern himself with amps in the dark, purely a daytime occupation wink .

No bulb, you had to wait until you went under a streetlamp to see how badly your amps were disappearing.

I'd suggest removing a tiny spot on the headlight reflector right under the ammeter. :-)

Replace the ammeter with an ash-tray, that would be about as useful...............


You can drill a small hole in the ammeter and glue a 3mm white led in, put a 1k5 0.5w resistor in series with it and you will be able
to see at night as well as in the day, how totally useless those ammeters are.

The Lucas ammeter makes a nice plug in the hole of the headlight where a VOLTMETER should have been.

I put a voltage indicator idiot light as sold by Paul Goff on my B44R. It glows a different colour depending on the voltage. You could mount it between the gauges. Had there been a voltage gauge that fitted in the ammeter hole I would have bought that.

Unlike some that think its useless I find an ammeter useful. To answer your question, sometimes your indicator lights in the headlight shell will actually illuminate the ammeter. Perhaps adding a small 281 bulb inside the headlight shell. Just make sure the ammeter body is completely transparent so it can shine through. Lucas ammeter never had bulbs fitted in them. I thought about using a 281 bulb and holder in the shell but I have never got to it.

If you are going to drill a hole in your ammeter shell, fill the thing with oil.
Once oil dmped they work a lot better and are less likely to be reading sympathetic engine vibrations than amps.

At night when you would want an ammeter light is the worst time to have on. It's when your electrical system is already over taxed be other useless energy wasters like a headlight, taillight, brake light and gauge lights. when all these are in use your ammeter is already discharging to the point that you want to get home before your battery goes dead. I suggest adding a flash light to your helmet of forehead in case you are not wearing a helmet.

Can you not get the charging system to work on any of your BSAs?

The charging system on all the alternator triumphs, bsa's etc is fine. (RM19/21/23/24 etc with rectifier and zener) Not the ET stuff.
The ammeter that was fitted was just crap. Even auto manufacturers who used ammeters in cars stopped fitting
ammeters when they switched from dynamos to alternators. A voltmeter will indicate if the battery is being charged or not which is what is required.

As for filling it with oil, used engine oil would be best, then you wouldn't be able to see it.

The 6 V alternator systems were pretty bad too.

Hope he gets his ammeter lit up though.

Agreed, switching the windings like that was always going to be a problem.
But they were cheaper to produce than dynamos and regulator boxes, and easier to drive.

So pretty much I'm reading that a standard 12V Lucas stator cant power a small bulb in a headlight shell.....

My 1965 A50DC has a battery status monitor fitted where the steering lock should go. Works a treat. http://aoservices.co.uk/data/bsm.htm
