Could anyone shed some light on when and under what circumstances fully valenced fenders/mudguards were used? Were they an option? UK only or were bikes fitted with them exported to the US? Was there a point after which they were no longer used?
I have a 1963 A65 and it has valanced mudguards but I think they ended in 1964-5 for the front mudguard when the A65 Rocket came out it had chrome mudguards, looking at photos in a book the rear valanced ones continued until 1966, I cannot find any photos with valanced mudguards after 1966. The 1966 Thunderbolt A65T/R for export to the USA had a rear valanced mudguard. as did the export A65L/R twin carb Lightning. The Cyclone models did not have valanced mudguards for export in 1965.
Can't be specific to the A65 but in general terms the valanced guards were used on older bikes and went out of fashion in the 60's, they changed first on US destined bikes and then on UK market in addition Sports bikes went first followed by more run of the mill bikes.
