There are some beautiful BSA's on eBay right now and are well worth looking at because you can ZOOM the pictures to check the details !!!
A 1957 Gold Star Scrambler just closed out at $15,000.00 and was a perfect example of its kind.
There is a 1962 RGS Replica that has EXCELLENT pictures that truly details what a quality restored bike should look like and is well worth looking at. The bid is at $10,100.00 at this time and is sure to climb alot higher before the bidding end.
There is also a 1966 Lightning Clubman worth looking at. There is doubts about it being a factory Lightning Clubman, but is still a nice bike to look at. The bid on it is presently at $4,500.00.
If you have extra time, and love the looks of quality Bsa motorcycles , these are well worth looking at before the bidding ends.

I think the seller has done very well with his description.
Makes you wonder what the chap that paid $8500 thought he was getting though.

I have seen someone who owned a 1969 Lightning get told by his mates that he had a Lightning Clubman.

That is not even close to being a Lightning Clubman. VIN is definitely way outta line.

That is the 2nd purported LC lately on fleaBay. Other one went to $8,500.00 and allegeldy sold. It too was not a real one, had a really wierd frame number, Like A50C153XX if I remember right. No way, IMO, did A50C frame nuimbers go that high.

Until someone proves otherwise, I will say it again, 1966 Lightning Clubman's are less common than proven Bigfoot remains........I will continue to call bullshyt on these alleged 66 LC's....but that is just me laughing

I notice that the guy was careful NOT to claim specifically that it was a genuine LC; HOWEVER, someone who wasn't careful and didn't know about them would definitely get the impression that it was an LC. I thought it was a pretty bike and would have given an Excellent Lightning price for it, since the mods were ones I would have made myself, but never the LC price ...!

I asked and he confirmed the frame and engine numbers are exactly the same. On a 1966 BSA, one year before the factory started matching frame and motor serial numbers. Rare indeed....

I would hate to see someone buy something that is not what they think it is.

A nice (and real, motor A65DC3148) 1965 BSA Clubman just went for $8500 on eBay last week.

Late 66 bikes were matching numbers, my 66 Spit has them.
Still it's certainly not a clubman.

Cheers

Well, it needs to be called. Look at what happened to "Hemi" Mopars, or Mustang GTs, or Pontiac Tempest "GTO"s, or Olds 4-4-2s .... There's more "Boss 302" Mustangs on the road today than Ford ever produced ... same as Chevelle "SS 396s" or "Hemi Cudas". It's easy to fake them unless someone calls BS on it, and people are "willing to believe" that they're getting something special at a good price.

I have a showroom picture, taken from a Danish book. Behind the Lightning Rocket, there is something clubmanish.

Sorry, that one was a fake as well. It had the implausible frame number I listed above, the rear drum/sprocket were wrong, and IMO, the worst offense, it had one of my link plates for the rear brake. Either one I sold or from my drawings. The one I drew up due to lack of information is much more elegant looking than the one BSA made. I have seen several link plates and had one in my hands that are genuine BSA, their link plates are crude in comparison. grin

A65DC is NOT a definitive indication of a Lightning Clubman. There are "lLightning's" built in 1965 in Oz with DC engine codes, there are 65 Lightning Rockets in the US with DC engine codes. I believe that the production of DC coded engines is definitely higher than accepted Lightning Clubman build. The accepted number is 190 in 1965 plus the 29 mythical ones in 66.

I have some suspicions the 190 number is high.

As already mentioned, during the model year, BSA went to matching numbers in 66. I used January 66 as rule of thumb, but Gary E has done some research and puts the date in the November/December1965 time frame. Not seen anything to contradict Gary's findings.

As others have mentioned the matching numbers started very early in the 1966 season. I am still struggling to find pics, or examples, of bikes without them.

As far as I am aware we don't have a definitive answer on this one yet. With the way the bikes were made and despatched there will not be just a S/N, ie before that and after that.

I have read several versions of what people think occurred but I would believe whatever Gary E here has to say on the matter.

You can guarantee Bacon and similar would have errors.

I think we all know the 1966 Clubmans are unlikely to be factory built. Rich B has to be the man that would know most of all.
That said I don't know if this eBay seller ever mentions it being a factory bike. Indeed he did mention in getting built about 10 years ago.

It was the reference to the auction that got my attention. I am sure someone did pay $8500 for that bike, alas I am not so sure that the buyer was aware of what comprises a true Clubmans.

For bikes that were produced over 40 years ago there are still some kooky ideas floating about.

The other thing that really gets me is some of the pics in the restoration guide books, why would the author choose to include pics of obvious bitsa's ?
Those particular pics only make muddy waters even murkier and possibly indicate the author's true knowledge of the subject.

A Clubman and a Victor GP in the same photo - it doesn't get much better than that.
