Getting the Firebird Scrambler for the '14 I. Rally in May. I'm always impressed how much new paint improves the looks, in this case powder coating.

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

OUT OF THE BLAST CABINET

AFTER

While getting the frame ready for the new paint, I cleaned out a pile of chunky oil crud. Had to use a screwdriver to break it up as it was in hard balls. Been in the frame for years.

When I thought I was done, I got more of the crud out.

Hey Gary laughing ,
I like the new work bench in the second pic.... whistle

Is this one a '69?
Do you happen to have a muffler support bracket?
Any pics with a ruler or tape beside the sections of the part?
Brett

Lannis,

I hope to have it all done except for the tank/sidecovers painting by the end of January.

Brett,

It's a '68 (the one year high pipes on each side), so no bracket to measure for you. Oh, and the Mini Cooper is about the size of my shop work bench.

Those are pretty bikes too!

Got one of those pipes years ago, when I found my Hornet pipes...

Which side is the pipe? I need a good left side.

I need a bigger trailer. Only have room for three, so not sure yet which one will be the third machine I will bring.

Why do you need 3 bikes for a week long event?

Why do any of us ever even "need" ONE BSA for anything? "Need" is a word with no meaning in our vocabulary. bigt

The extras are for other club members to ride that couldn't bring theirs, or maybe just to park at the rally and show them off? whistle

Lannis has it right. Other riders, more bikes. I have one, maybe two members that are in need of a steed.

Or, maybe I'll just bring one of the Hornets or the Wasp and ride it high on the pipes through the campground at daylight.

If the trailer can haul three, I might as well bring three.

Substantiation for Gary here.

There may be some of you that may be able to attend the Int'l, who have never heard an original open pipe Hornet on song, snarlin' up the side of a hill, or maneuvering accross a race course.

If he manages to have access to an off-road course, field, or hill, to show off one of his marvelous restorations, if he will, you cannot understand how sweet these bikes sound!

Just winding out on a piece of pavement, just doesn't do these pipes any justice.
Nor wasting off-road rubber on pavement.

These machines are NOT open-piped untuned-length-and-size, how-loud-can-you-be-waste-your-money, piece-of-junk hardley ablesons.

I didn't want to sound patronising, was just curious.

It's a shame I won't be there to see them.

Looking forward to seeing this one built ,

Are you going to go through each stage and show the position of spacers ect, to help us more amateur types?

Do you have a picture of the bike as bought?

Cheers
Malc

I rescued this machine from Pennsylvania. It hadn't been run in 10 years. It actually didn't look too bad. Lots of rust, with some areas fairly deep. No muffler brackets, so the pipes were just hanging by the head.

Got it home, changed all the fluids, cleaned out the tank, rebuilt the carbs, cleaned the plugs and points, added a battery, added some fuel, and it started on the 3rd kick.

Been riding it ever since. Typical maintenance along the way like wiring repair, cable replacements, tires, etc. It got crashed in '07, so a complete front end rebuild was done. It's been a work in progress machine with little down time along the way so to keep it as a rider. A few images as rescued.

I think you should save the dirt you found in the frame. It may have some historical value to go along with those bricks from the old factory.

Well, 4 days later, and the Firebird is coming along nicely. When its +2 degrees outside and 4 inches of snow on the ground, what else is there to do but hang out in a nice warm shop with the TV on a football game, a cold beer in hand and get the Firebird ready for the I. Rally.

The rear end is mostly installed. Other than filing out the excess powder coating in the usual holes, all has gone without a hitch. I'll probably install the front end next to get the machine on its rubber.

Come on over and have a beer.

The Firebird is coming along nicely. I've been taking my time with it lately during the upcoming holiday season and in that I'm way ahead of schedule in getting it ready for the I. rally. NOS wire harness replaced the original that had repairs made to it over the years and, all of the smoke had leaked out. The new harness has all of the required Lucas smoke, but I added some more anyway. Check out the image below. New front sealed wheel bearings replaced the original grease'em style. Turned the front drum to get the hard spot/lump out. Did it with the rim and tire on it, so it saved a ton of time not having to dismount the tire, unlace the rim and reverse assembly. The bike is ready for the engine to be dropped in when I finish getting it all cleaned up and a few of its parts polished like the inner and timing covers. All of the wire ties are temporary. Proper John Bulls will be used.

Is that proper NOS Lucas smoke from back in the day, Gary....or is it the new environmentally friendly stuff with all the ozone removed? grin
