That's where the hole for the steering lock was on early bikes. I think the hole was used through '65, then was indented until maybe around '68 when it went away completely. I don't have firm years available but I think the indent may be correct for your '66.

My 66 Spitfire has the indentation. I can't measure its size because it's in a display at the Hagerty Insurance office building in Traverse City for the month.

There are two Spares manuals for 1966, early and late versions. The late version is almost identical to the 1967 model year manual. This is probably why there is some confusion regarding parts for the '66.

There doesn't seem to be anything straightforward with the 66 spitfire.
Maybe a database detailing when the changes were made, should be created.

Gary,do you know when the later book was introduced ?
The bracket in the later parts book doesn't have the indent and has the full rubber cups for the clocks .

Mine was shipped in May 66 ,I have just bought some metal guage holders and want to know if they are right for it ?.
