Hello
I have nearly finished my 1966 MK11 Spitfire and I was looking for the next project..... I came across a 1968 T120R with "matching numbers". I have a copy of the Gerad Kane book (Original Triumph Bonneville) and I have been through the identification section but I can't find a picture of a 1968 stamping. It has the numbers stamped on the raised pad (T120R above DU7713?). Looking at the casting parting lines I don't think the pad could have been ground down. The pad is dimpled i.e. has a cast appearance. The T120R and DU are thinner than the 5 numbers. The 5 numbers look larger, thicker and heavier than the T120R and DU. Is there a quick way of getting the numbers verified before parting with the cash? I'm a bit nervous as I know of someone in the trade who spent a lot of money restoring a 1961 Bonneville and it turned out to be a Trophy. He found out at a show just after he had accepted an offer on it..... Luckily he was offered a genuine frame and cases and all the parts were transferred into that but he still lost out financially.
Thanks, any advice would be gratefully received.

The T120 should be one stamp with quite thin digits, the R I think was still seperate for 68. The DU should also be one stamp and the same thin digits. The numbers should all be seperate stamps and are a diferent font. The 7 should have a curved tail. Not sure about the raised pad, I thought this came in in 69 along with the multiple Triumph stamps. You need to confirm this.

Thanks
The T120, R and DU are all quite thin compared to the numbers. The R doesn't look individually stamped, maybe it's just a neat job? The 3 has a tail on the end of the lower part, not sure about the 7. The 5 numbers appear to be triangular or angular in cross section, certainly not a font I have seen on modern number/letter punches. I asked SRM about the numbers as I had to enquire about getting some casing damage fixed. They said that they looked correct and they have seen raised pads without the Triumph logo, they said that this came in during 1969. The Gerard Kane book states that the Triumphs stampings came in during 1969 on engine number DU 86965.

I have an early 68 and there is no raised pad or logos.
The T120R is lightly stamped, the DU is heavier. The next three numbers are the same and not evenly spaced. The last two numbers are leaning down hill a bit.

1968 T120R
1972 T120RV
Any advice given is without a warranty expressed or implied.

Hello
I have just found a Classic Bike Review of a 1968 T120 and a T120R belonging to the same person. The T120R doesn't have a raised pad. I can't see the engine number on the T120 in the articles but the same T120 is featured in the Gerard Kane book and it has a raised pad. I can't make out the actual numbers but the groupings look the same as the bike I have put a deposit on i.e. T120 above possibly DU7..... I can't make out the rest of the numbers and according to the book the Triumph logos didn't come in until 1969 and engine number 86965. I guess there must have been a cross over with raised pads without logos. Can anyone confirm?

You are correct.

Sometime in midyear, they went to a raised pad without logos on the 1968 models.

I have two 68 Bonnies. The early vin # one does not have a raised pad and the later vin # has the raised pad w/o triumph logos.

The "T120R" And "DU" are lightly stamped (single stamp) and the numbers have a deeper stamp.

Can't tell you for sure about the numbers themselves, but I do know this bike is 602 hundred off from the 68 T120R I owned in the early 70s. T120R DU7111, but I can't really remember what the stampings looked like. Sorry I can't be of more help, but good luck with it!

Thanks gents.
I have been looking for a long time I just hope it's genuine.

Atlanta Bonnie, I have started another post containing some photos of the engine and frame numbers. Do they look the same as your bike?
The post is titled: 1968 T120R Do these numbers look correct?
Thanks again.
