Who's drinking what?

Who's drinking what? - 09/10/17 12:23 am

As a bit of a beer guy, I thought it may be fantastic to get other people's faves to try them! Here in Ontario Canada, were blessed with a pretty fantastic craft beer scene, so there's some great diversivity!!! However, I love enjoy hearing about what other people are drinking!!! I'm currently drinking a beer called First World Problems (the label is hilarious), and it's a Belgian IPA!!

So who's drinking what!?? beerchug

Boundary Road Brewery Arabica Dabra or Chocolate Moose. I like treat myself to a bottle of either about once a month. Pour it slowly and enjoy the smell as I sip it from a pint glass. So good!

We can get some good proper beers here now, Theakstons 'old peculiar', Adnams, Shepherd Neams, even Marsdons Pedigree.
Bloody triffic, i missed 'em. All the chemical crap that's the norm, it's like drinking iced gas water.

I'm kinda taking it easy these days. But I like good micro or craft brewed beer and ale. I like tequila too. Been drinking tequila & mexcal lately with various chili peppers or hot sauces among other ingredients.

the only two liquor stores within 30 miles no longer carry mezcal. so im forced to drink tequila instead.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/10/17 8:56 pm

I bought a 24-oz bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon the other day.

I use it to fill my "hornet traps"; they're glass bulbs with a sort of a "tunnel" entrance in the bottom, and when the beer gets stale, the yellow-jackets and hornets get in but they can't get out. "Pollinators" don't go to it, so the honeybees and bumblebees are safe, but the aggressive, dangerous stingers stay for life.

Very useful stuff, beer.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/10/17 10:50 pm

Lanis- that's a good use for beer! I am a bit of a sucker for Pabst as it's the best of the horse urine beers.... I've heard it described as unicorn urine instead!!

Richochet - that sounds very intriguing! What sort of combinations have you found that are worth writing down!? I don't do liquor such as Tequila but I cook with the stuff like crazy, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you've experimented with!

Peter- I love Belgians. The Donkers style is a particular favourite of mine! At the other end of the spectrum is Hoegaarden at the other end of that spectrum. Any sort of Trappist or abbey are usually outstanding. Got a brand new Rhodenbach Grand Cru sitting in my fridge that I may crack open later on this evening!

Beeza- being in Canada, it's difficult to get good tea!! Even though we're a colony! I lived in England every summer for the first 14 years of my life, and I was raised with the good stuff! I have found twinings here but it's different to how I remember it in England!

Nick and Mr Moulding.... all those beers sound like something I would love!!! I need to get back over to England ......

One thing we are blessed with here is local wine! So enjoying a bottle of red, and a stew!!!

been swilling Coors Banquet beer last few weeks...it's $5.99 a six pack each bottle has a little 'saying' in the cap..here's one "Quietly work. Let success speak up."
Posted By: Alexp

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/10/17 11:29 pm

I'm so angry that you Americans get beer that cheap. A decent 6 pack up here is $14.80, and the cheap stuff is still 10 bucks. Luckily, I'm only 15 minutes from the border, but you lot definitely have the right idea with private liquor stores. Ontario is the only province with a Liquor Control Board... I swear it's still bleedinprohibition up here!!

Wade, it's nice to see I'm not the only hop head on here! Here in Ontario we have benefitted from the IPA boom with some fantastic brews, from sessions to imperials.

Mike G - kudos to you! I can't drink Scotch, no matter how much I try. I need to pony up one day, with someone who has a few and try and spot some different flavours in it. I just can't get past the massive alcohol content!!!!

Alexp-If you like heavily hopped beers and ales you might like Islay style scotch. Has a dark smokey/peaty flavor. Or you might try a speyside or highland single malt...the emphasis here is on SINGLE MALT, not blended. I don't claim to be an expert by any means but I know what I like. I will also admit to being a heretic of sorts by sometimes adding a small bit of water or several ice cubes to "knock the rough edges off" .

I am not a Scotch drinker as a result of poor judgment as a teenager. I do like my whiskey though. Just finished a bottle of Redemption Rye, Very nice. Last night, I started a bottle of Jameson's Black Barrel. Also very nice. I have an unopened bottle of Dad's Hat Rye Whiskey that I will be taking to the East Coast Moto Giro in a couple of weeks. Even nicer!

I did have "Give Peat a Chance" stout from Oro Brewing in Mesa AZ couple of weeks ago. Very simply, best stout I have had yet. An amazing beer

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/11/17 10:55 pm

I have a friend who's a Scotch guy and he recommended Islay as well. I should just take the plunge and go for it!!

Tonight it's a great IPA called Boneshaker! It's a bit stronger (7.1), but it's nice because I only need 3 a night, and I'm a happy chappy. I must ask though, does anyone else notice they drank much more before they bought a motorcycle? I have a friend who's convinced his Norton cured him of being an alcoholic. As he said, I found a way better buzz, which I can't enjoy when I drink. Instead of detox programs, we just need to throw recovering alcoholics on beautiful old brit bikes!!!

i cut a two-liter soda jug in two around the equator and invert the top half to make a one-way funnel trap. mountain dew soda is irresistible to yellowjackets. in bad years i've taken a pint of drowned insects a day out of two traps on my kitchen porch, for a week or more.

i don't mind honeybees. i'll gladly take fifty honeybee stings for one from a yellowjacket.

well maybe twenty-five. depends on where they sting me. the underside of my pecker has proven to be a bad spot.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/12/17 12:27 am

the best sting story i ever heard was from a seventh day adventist beekeeper friend of mine. forgive me if i'm repeating myself. you have to understand that seventh day adventists are so clean in every way that they squeak when they turn their head. charlie wore a spotless white bee suit, never cussed, and never mentioned anything off-color in all the years i knew him.

at breakfast one day he explained to me how he was once caught short in a bee yard, and went to the bushes with his toilet paper. he hid from his people, but not from his bees. unbeknownst to him, one of his six legged employees lit on the paper he had laid on the ground while his attention was elsewhere. describing this to me, charlie the seventh day adventist looked me in the eye and said,

". . . and when i picked that paper up, that bee stung me right on the pucker-string of my asshole . . . "

i was dumfounded, and didn't quite recover my composure until after he had left.

my own story is similar, but without the drama.

although the girls have hit me three times now.

I like a nice hard cider, especially in the winter time but I've never been able to develop a taste for Southern Comfort. Hits me like a ton of bricks and gives me horrible hangovers. I call it Sudden Discomfort.

In but a few moments time I'll be firing up the FORTY INCHER, and then we're off to Belgium, for the MTO Rally held in Oosetende... grin

Where I shall be quaffing all sorts of wonderful Ale, Belgium being known for beer and all... wink

BUT, I discovered at the BSAOC International in Holland t'other week, I'm partial to a drop of Captain Morgan's Rum, I also love me Brandy, been known to have Vodka, and Southern Comfort. Not in the same glass y'all understand, I don't drink till I fall down, or indeed have a problem with it. If I do fall down, it's due to me being tired and worn out... bigt

Right that's me lot, time to fire the bike up, and off to yet ANOTHER weekend of fun, later dudes... beerchug

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/15/17 5:48 am

OK I need to ask, What is a hipster? I
I drink Pabst. I drank it along with Blatz, Old Style, Miller and when in the U.P., Stroh's
This started in the mid 70s.
At this same time beer can collecting was a popular activity, so I would try other beers from around the country.
Allen Bond took Heileman Brewing (Old Style and Special Export) with a buyout. The Company was just broken up and sold piecemeal.
The Business Section of the Milwaukee journal ran a story and interview with an official of the Pabst Brewing. They had stated how the company was doing.
In the story the official stated that the stock was trading at a value that was less than the company was worth.
A short time later Paul Kalmanovits Started a leveraged buy out of the company. The real Pabst brewery was soon shuttered and striped.
So for awhile most of the beers I started with were no longer available.
Fast forward to today.
The beers are back, but in this area they are brewed at the Miller Brewery on State st. in Milwaukee.
Many micro breweries have opened in Wisconsin in the last decade. I enjoy some of them. I will take a trip to try them, especially if they are connected to a restaurant.
While these beers offer new tastes and can become complex with how the flavor can change while drinking them, when I want to just have a simple beer that I do enjoy at home, Pabst works.
I will help friends and they ask what kind of beer do I want. When I say Pabst, they will say "oh come have a good beer". I tell them it is what I like, it's just a little nicer that a 30 pack is $16. So it is a win both ways.

I also like a good taste of Jameson (having one now in fact.) Tullamore Dew is quite good as well.
As for beer, I usually buy Yuengling Black & Tan, a good, reasonably priced dark beer. When I'm out it depends on the bar. The closest hole in the wall has Newcastle for $3. At my favorite dart bar I drink Shiner Bock. Sundays out for the dart draw at Nashvegas they have Yuengling Porter, a bit heavier than Black & Tan. They also have a local brew on tap. Yeeha Dunkel is a very tasty German-style dark beer.
Loves me some Guinness too!

So is Strohs still around? I drank quite a bit of it when I lived in Tennessee in the early 80s.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/15/17 4:57 pm

I would like a Guinness too, if it had any taste to it......

Sorry, but IMO, most over rated beer on this planet. I avoided the amazing stouts that are available simply because of Guinness.

Oro Brewing in Mesa AZ makes a stout that is simply amazing. Great Basin Outlaw Milk Stout is pretty over the top too in the taste department too.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/15/17 6:28 pm

Re: Who's drinking what? - 09/16/17 12:30 am

Ed,

A lot of people have told me the same thing about Guinness......but to my taste buds, no matter how it is served, poured, etc., it come off dry, bland, and no real taste. There are some other craft brews that I hear nothing but praise and I find bland at best.

And I know there are some beers I find very good, are not well received by other people. Brew Kettle White Rajah comes to mind. I find White Rajah to be an amazing beer.....other people have very unflattering comments about the taste.

I do find the difference in people's taste in beer to be interesting.....

For whatever that is worth

I had a German style brown ale this week from a micro-brew in the works. It was exceptional. Got a couple of more to try.

Guy I work with and 2 of his friends are brewing beer with the plan to open a micro brewery. I have been the recipient of beer from their efforts for an opinion. These guys keep getting better and better results. I was blown away with the German brown. They have a single malt, single hop IPA that was impressive in V1.0, waiting for V2.0 to ferment.

They entered their first competition this summer with their porter and stout and got top 5 finishes with both. I have examples of the latest version which Justin says is better than the version that got awards. Looking forward to trying them.

The other day my local radio station was suggesting a Liberty Belle cocktail in honor of the 335th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia. 2 ounces of Bourbon, 1 ounce of Peach Schnapps (I used Peach Brandy), a dash of Apricot Brandy and a dash of Campari. Mix with ice, stir for 25 seconds and strain into a Martini glass. It was actually quite good. The bitterness of the Campari offset the sweetness of the brandy.
What drink would be appropriate in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation?

I don't know if it appropriate for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther stirring things up a bit......but I am having a bit of Buffalo Trace.

Prost Martin, you upset the apple cart!

We are in Cornwall, situated in Mousehole. Drinking many great local Cornish traditional cask ales, and also found a really great vodka made entirely from cow's milk, Black Cow Vodka!

Much to my surprise, one day while standing line the line at the local Ace Hardware, I spotted bottles of soda, one called Red Birch Beer. I snapped up a couple of quarts of it.
Sure enough, it was the same stuff I used to get when I lived in upstate New York in the early 70's. I never saw it outside of the East coast of the US.

Excellent stuff.

Cheers,
Bill

Any of you Ohio guys remember Royal Castle? Many years ago I worked there and we made Birch Beer. Tasted like root beer. Last night I was sipping Bulleit Rye on my deck.

A couple of months ago I wrote that I was drinking tea.

Seems that the shyte that hit me half a year ago has mostly taken away my taste & liking for alkyholic beverages frown
Except that for some reason the occasional half pint of Guiness is enjoyable

Tonight I am still drinking tea

I do hope this affliction is not permanent

Sam Adams "Winter Lager".

Re: Who's drinking what? - 11/07/17 6:10 pm

I love the Sam Adams seasonal beers! They can be hard to find here sometimes, but when they appear, they vanish pretty quickly!!

Later on today, I will be enjoying some very interesting Scottish Heather Ales, so will be sure to put them up.

Has anyone else on here got the ap called Untappd? It's a fantastic beer ap that allows you to check in what you've had, add friends etc...

I tried the Budweiser "repeal special" amber a week ago. Not too bad, hoppy like a Sam Adams. 6% alcohol.
Too expensive the try again unless I really want to get drunk.

I got time for one more Tullimore DEW before bed.

Re: Who's drinking what? - 11/10/17 6:09 pm

Well, well, where to begin..
Beers: Depending on my surroundings, company, and thirst, I rarely turn anything away. I enjoy the IPA's and various pumpkin-like things for a brief period of the year. Most of these offered by friends and gratefully quaffed by me. My brother offers me a Corsendonk Ale and I've hurt him rushing it out of his hand. However, my usual personal investment in beer is Guinness Extra Stout, sure to please year-round.
Spirits: My dad was a Scotch man through and through, but not a rich man and he died before all this single malt craze made it all a bit silly. So he drank Ballantines, Cutty Sark, and whatever offered, all blends no doubt. I did not develop a taste for it as a young man but do enjoy Scotch now. I've enjoyed many single malts and somehow have become quite a collector without even trying as I get a lot as gifts. Not all that fond of the terribly peaty types, I served my friend a glass of Talisker and he said it tasted like the Sears Tire Store where he once worked smelled. My own investment in Scotch usual stops with Famous Grouse. I still keep a bottle of Ballantines around in honor of dad. I enjoy Irish, Bushmills, Redbreast, and Tullamore DEW especially among them. Thanks to Ed Dunham of this Forum I've become fond of a Maker's Mark Manhattan now and then. Also thanks to Ed there is a bottle of Dad's Hat Rye on hand. "As Comfortable As Dad's Old Hat."
Lastly, befitting the season and with a nod to my long enlistment in the Coast Guard, I have been enjoying Dark and Stormys. Make them with a tumbler of ice, an ounce or two of black rum (Black Seal), a bit of lime juice, top it off with Crabbie's Ginger Beer (the alcoholic type). They go down too easy.

Martin Luther drank beer made at home, as was most beer back then. But he was a binge alcoholic- sadly, he would go months without excess drinking and then..
He said and wrote things when drunk that he was ashamed of, and felt terribly guilty about it.
We all have our struggles.

Had a couple of incredible beers last night, but the one I can't stop thinking about was a cask conditioned cider called Garage d'or Pareidoila. Truly unbelievable. Also had the Bellwoods Jelly King sour.

I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pa. A shot and a beer was all a bartender had to know how to make. Right now it's PBR out of the can and Bourbon out of the bottle. Why dirty a glass?

Tonight I'm sipping a Jim Beam Black bourbon. However, when I drink beer (which is often) my favorite is Bell's Two Hearted Ale when I can get it. When I can't, it's Goose Island IPA.

Been enjoying a wee dram of Bushmills Black lately, and a can of Guinness draft when it is time for a Beer. I only drink Guinness on days that start with a T. ... Like Tuesday, Thursday, Today, Tomorrow, Thaturday and Thunday!
