One State Ride 2018 - 07/25/18 3:43 pm

Looks like fall will be here soon enough, meaning it's time to plan for this years One State Mountain ride in Coudersport PA. I'm thinking the weekend of Sept 22nd might work for all? Let me know. Accomodations are here:

Details on this ride please?

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 07/28/18 12:02 pm

David:
It's a ride through the mountains of north central PA. Loosely organized and the route is always subject to change but the scenery and company is always first class! We stay at the Laurelwood Inn in Coudersport https://www.laurelwoodinnandsteakhouse.com/ they have a nice restaurant and bar right there. I usually arrive on Thursday and scout out the route, most others get there Friday. A nice dinner and beverage session Friday night, a nice ride Saturday followed by another nice evening with good friends and home on Sunday. The only thing I would like to see different is a fire pit at the Inn, but what can you do?
Always room for more riders, hope to see you there!

I'd like to join, but it depends on my work schedule, so no preference on dates since work is unknown.

Mike, unless I ride over I usually take two. Have been known to break down. Thus, a spare. For me or someone else. Would like to have the A10 by then but may not.

That's the plan. Take advantage of our retired state of life by spending a month or so on the road seeing the USA from the seat of a motorcycle.

We've ridden hundreds of thousands of miles together but it's all been east of the Mississippi (including the UK, Bermuda, and Canada) - we've never seen the American West from a bike.

I'm not even sure of the route yet ... we were originally going to try to see a Kirtland's Warbler (a little bird that only lives in the jackpine forests of central Michigan), but Jack A. reminded us that they won't be there in September, so we'll still go through Michigan but see other things.

Then the U.P., Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and then stop a few days with my cousin in Montana, who is superintendent of a National Park there, then down through Utah and then ask.

Lannis, as I recall, the Kirtland's Warbler southern migration begins toward the end of September. You may want to check a bit further... I think you'd probably have a pretty good chance to see a few in the Mio/Roscommon area all the way through September.

Admirable quest!

What a plan !
Me, envious?
No, not really for none of us ever know what is round the corner and that is why we did what we could while we could. And we have the memories of what we have done, where we been, the folks we have met along the way

Go do it Lannis, enjoy every mile for every mile goes in your memory bank

Maybe next year Bill! First time I was able to make this one and I'm glad I did. Good company, fantastic roads and the weather was cooperative. Not sure why, but I just didn't take that many pictures. I think I was enjoying myself too much to even care...

Wade rolled in after dark from NYC on Friday night in the rain....things looked a whole lot better for him, his bike, and his tool-kit in the light of Saturday morning:

[Linked Image]

Actually, the Jameson's was drunk the night before. The bottle made for a perfect water dispenser for a Honda with some dry cells in it's battery:

[Linked Image]

It was a bit fiddly and tedious, but it worked! Someone needs to let him know the fettling is best done on Friday nights....

[Linked Image]

I had never seen a live bait vending machine before, so I *had* to take a pic:

[Linked Image]

Bill trying to figure out why he can't get his dipstick to register any oil in the tank at a gas stop. It was fortunate that he decided to check it!

[Linked Image]

After an especially nice section of the ride (PA144/44(?)), a late lunch. Good thing too, because by this point in the day my hands and arse were getting a bit numb:

[Linked Image]

At the lunch stop 3/5 of the New England contingent. 1/5 of the remaining 2/5's was going too fast and blew about 30 miles past our destination, but it was all sorted in the end.

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 10/08/18 3:27 pm

Yes, but what was a method of you guys getting there with your old bikes, ride them or trailer them ?
I could use my little flying brick ( K75S ) to get there just riding, but with the Trident it would be a stretch specially without any luggage capacity on this bike.
I also should talk with my riding buddy Steve about this idea - it'd be much more pleasant to go together on our old Triumphs ( his "old" ride is 69 TR6 or 73 R75/5 )
)
Posted By: JubeePrince

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 10/08/18 4:01 pm

I trailered mine, but only b/c of time constraints. I was not able to leave until mid-morning on Friday and and had to be back Sunday afternoon. If I had a few extra days, I'd probably make it an overnight up and an overnight back.

It's not the mechanical ability of my bike I'm worried about.....like I said when I posted the pics, it's about the numb arse and hands! laugh Luggage, too is an issue, but I've loaded it up before at half the distance (~125 mi)

Cheers,

Steve

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 10/08/18 7:33 pm

I've trailered out every time strictly because of time constraints as well. I'm sure my Norton with the Interstate tank and seat would make it an easy one day trip but the BSA is best suited to 50mph back road cruising and would add a few to the trip. I wouldn't really mind that but I'm usually under the gun to get firewood cut and stacked and a million other outdoor fall projects to get done before winter. I think the only ones who have ever ridden in on old iron are No Name Bill, Ben Strain and Bezza Bryan.

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 10/08/18 8:37 pm

That was 2013 Mike and what an adventure thumbsup

Me & Marie running the last miles with the clutch on the TR5T that Ben had loaned us hanging on by a thread & a tank on fumes. Dare not stop to get gas because I knew there would be no way it would start again.

[Linked Image]

Being used to English gas tanks holding 4.5 & more US gallons those tiny US gas tanks did cause me some grief! Lucky to get 75 maybe 80 miles before reserve.
What reserve?
To quote the late lamented Mr Ben " You need to be in sight of a gas station if you go on reserve"
Most the way through Coudersport heading for breakfast we were almost in sight of a gas station when it gave up and No Name Bill had to push to the nearby Sheetz.
Later in the day I nigh on ran the damn thing dry again but did get to a gas station this time.

Unpacking the bags back at Greenspring I found some kind person (Howard Inough?) had stashed an empty bottle for use if I did manage to run dry again.

Richrd rode his Norton from Nebraska the first time he came. I missed that year as I was in Wales or somewhere. Too bad as that was the year it snowed! I usually trailer because I usually bring two. Or three with Rob's on there.

Geeze........I've only missed two. My trip is about 560 miles one way. I've ridden it once on my 1967 B44VR, once with Floyd's Velorex chair attached to the same bike and once on a 2010 Honda. Total for the weekend runs around 1200-1400 miles.

At the time an almost 50 year old BSA 441 unit single........made the trip twice and you fellers have an extra cylinder and a lot more CC's and you're worried about doing less that 300 miles????????

Gone and I guess forgotten......Gordon in NC who's STILL proud to be one of the BSA unit single guys

As much as i like distance riding, this is not the time or place. The problem is unpredicable weather. Both times I,ve been there its been a cold trip home. This year I trailered and it hurt, but it also was much more comfortable.

The other time Ben and I road through snow down to i80.

I hear ya Richrd..........................you have over TWICE the distance I do and you're also traveling East to West. Out of the three times I've ridden, two times it was 26-30 degrees when I left ( before daylight) but I'm traveling South so it warms up as the day goes on. 500+ miles one way is a perfect distance for me and an easy do.........I'll be there next year one way or the other. I've trailer-ed to the ride more times than I've ridden........but my BEST trips have been on two wheels. On the B44 it was two lane country roads...spread out over two days...a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery. On the 2010 RS........it was mostly interstate and even though it's a lot quicker....... to borrow a quote Royal Oilfield used about another subject ( chase truck ride) "It's sucks the life out of you".

Gone and mostly forgotten........Gordon in NC

Damn!! My mind must still be in Nova Scotia after last weeks vacation for me to have forgotten that blush frown And to have forgotten Richrd's Norton as well. facepalm I remember one of his trips out on the Wee Strom though.

Look forward to our paths crossing again Wade.......you and I didn't get off to such a good start but I do consider you "one of the good guys" and your always a joy to be around.

Mike Gordon.......I forgive you my friend. You are the kind of person that makes this site what it is.....and you're a true asset to the hobby.

As for this event/ride.......it is my absolute favorite. It really couldn't get any better. As for some of the lame excuses folks use to NOT make it......it's pretty much the same time of year EVERY year and in the same place. Making other plans is your fault. BUT........that said, keeping it on the smaller side does have it's benefits.

Losing Mr Ben left a BIG hole.........but I see this event as a way to honor him.

I think perhaps your only other trip was on the Wee Strom, the year Floyd was there and Fudge Girl got scared by the spider in my truck.

Now we're getting it sorted. I "think" as far as vintage.....I hold the record. But this is if I remember correctly that Semper trailer-ed last year.

I'm MORE than willing to give that honor up though........I think I can speak for Mike Gordon when I say EVERYONE is welcome. You will not regret it.

Adam........you'll be motel camping (very nice, clean, and very reasonable rates) so you really don't need a lot of gear. To quote another of my heroes Dick Harris, "If you do your work at home you don't need to carry a bunch of tools and spares" unfortunately for me I've never been a mechanic so I have to carry a BUNCH of tools and spares. Sounds like fun, you and a buddy riding vintage in.......consider it. Got to sorta like living on the edge and be ready for anything that could happen......but with a buddy along at least you'd have company. MOST trailer......so you'll not catch any grief if you decide to go that way.

Proud to still be one of the BSA unit single guys.......Gordon in NC

I think I'm guilty of a false assumption Rich. I wasn't there that year as I said. Gordon still leads the distance on vintage category...

So...on the subject of excuse planning...interesting you should bring up, Wade, the plentiful potential events next year. I mentioned to Sharry that the Superior ride is scheduled for the same time as the Coudersport one and she said "Oh, that's too bad. One of your vacations is interfering with another one". I sense a little sarcasm there...

You want to talk about weather, that'll be something to talk about on the north shore of Lake Superior around this time of year .... ! And better get out the Scott Of The Antarctic gear if you're thinking about camping in it!

It was my first time successfully making this trip. I can attest to the fact that your name came up more than once during the weekend.

Richrd did a fine job representing for the Beeza singles crew!

So it's all planned for a next year, we will truck our 2 Triumphs to the motel and go from there.
Probably showing Thursday, not Friday to make it little longer.
If life won't interfere certainly.

As long as we're on the subject, I've been thinking about moving the date up a week or two, to say the first or second weekend of Sept, rather than risking the sometimes dicey weather that can occur later in the month. Are there any other big events going on around then?

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 10/11/18 1:15 pm

Might not be a bad idea, Mike. The TSMR is ALWAYS the first weekend in May after Mother's Day, so maybe something similar in September?

First or second weekend after Labor Day? Second might be better as it's a short week after Labor Day. It would probably help for those trying to go but need longer-range planning options.....

Yeah Lannis...I mentioned that when I was first invited but apparently there are conflicts for some. Tom and Shaun? Mike, if you move it to earlier in September then my problem doesn't exactly go away. It becomes a different one. How long can I be away from home? Like I have said before, I'll try to make it whenever you have it.

Well, you're the guy who makes ALL the events, all the Internationals, all the memorial rides ... maybe there's a limit somewhere and they start crashing into each other; you may have found it.

As we say, it's a "First World Problem" ... !

Is anyone talking about this event for 2019? Has a time line been established?

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 05/02/19 2:56 pm

I usually schedule it on or about the last weekend in September. I might move it up a week or so this year as we often get some cool wet weather. The weekend of the 21st is what I'm thinking, but I like to wait till we get a bit closer and get some consensus from others as to what weekend works best. No matter what, it will happen! Come on down and enjoy the ride and good company.

Re: One State Ride 2018 - 05/02/19 8:42 pm

Would be coming down with my pal Adam M. However, it's very much weather dependent. The earlier in September the better.

New year needs a new thread.
Otherwise I’ll miss out.

Thanks in advance.
