not everybody listens to music, but for those who do, everybody's tastes are different, curiously so.

the last few days i've been struck by two pieces of music that i cannot get out of my head. i drive a truck for 10 or 12 hours a day, can't get out, can't stop, can't do anything else. so the stuff i think about has a long time to work.

i don't see how these two pieces of music could be so different, and yet both have affected me strongly. so this is what i'm listening to, at the moment. what about you?

The guy I was working with today was listening to Wide Spread Panic. Pretty good and also Bob Weir .... He had a Greatful dead Tattoo as well so I guess it was to be expected. I did just pick up some vinyl at a thrift store any been playing those all week before I go to bed. Joe Cocker and CCR , Bessie Smith and Cream, Crosby Still and Nash plus many others all for a dollar a piece. They play pretty good too. Best score on used records I think I've ever had.

My taste in purely instrumental music leans toward King Crimson, Brian Eno, Miles Davis, Jeff Beck, and the occasional Bach organ toccata.
Last night was John Mayall and Peter Gabriel.
Jazzy blues, bluesy Jazz, Rocky blues, bluesy rock Jazzy rock, that kind of thing. Bach& Mozart. Every riff ever done by anyone was already done by Bach 300+ years ago. It's true.

Never had a strong passion for music but have always enjoyed the quieter side. Never got into Rock and the heavy stuff, lets put it this way the first concert I ever went to was a Peter Paul and Marry concert and the second one was The Beach Boys. Growing up in Honolulu back in the day (50's 60's) there was not a lot going on concert wise. Then one nigh 6 years ago being a big fan of Jay Leno I saw this 11 year old and things changed for me music wise. After looking around on You Tube I realized it wasn't just the music but it was her as a person that had such warmth and true joy in every thing she does. In this day and age where little Hana Montana is twerking in front of the world and the Kardashian's are looked up to like gods to the younger generation I had just about given up hope for humanity (not really) but close. She is now 16 and has been around the world from Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, I saw her in concert in Costa Rica and three other concerts on the west coast. To this day she is as sweet, humble and kind as she was at 10 and I have no fear she will go off the deep end. She has some great parents that have done a wonderful job bringing up all of their four kids. Her voice has just gotten better and better every year, just hope I'll be around when she is 30 so I can hear her then.

On Jay Leno

Just three years later in Detroit

Her solo voice is so pure but there is an added benefit when she performs duets, Andrea Bocelli, Sara Brightman, the Canadian The Three Tenors and Peter Hollens and others.

This was just last week from a PBS Special, not the best sound and video.

Last thing I had on the home stereo was an older record by the Waco Brothers. Kind of a punk/country/rock vibe. Noisy, raucous, punky and fun.

Traveling around Inlisten to the radio. East coast/north Jersey I like WFMU out of Jersey City? "Freeform" radio, lots of crazy rock, imaginative music, avant-garde, experimental stuff, and some good ol noise and sounds.

Around Baltimore I like WTMD out of Towson. Awesome new music and some later "classics".

I listen to podcasts, as well- streaming thru my phone. Ben Baughn's The Many Moods Of Ben Vaughn is a favorite.

...the problem with the music in Ytube etc is that is compressed. .mp3 etc files are not good enough to listen music; you have the lows and highs-very highs cut.
Even worst is that you are listening with your lap top or like that; all those do not have a dedicated sound card. The differences are notorious (big) (get the joke). I have a HIFI stereo amp and when I watch a motorcycle video or a movie I connect the laptop to the amp and then switch with the same video to the desktop that have a soundblaster card and the difference is big.
Even more difference if I put a CD in the stereo and compare the same song, tune, piece in Ytube.
Yes, is a democratization and a way to listen to music that could be under the radar or in styles that most do not know but then buy the record and the satisfaction will be bigger.
I still find embellishments in Beatles songs that I forgot or never heard before; all those you CANNOT hear/listen in Ytube. There are styles that really need to be listened real not compressed. Yes, a simple song accompanied by a guitar is just ok.

The last four things I listened to were Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell, the "Cars" Anthology, the Lewis Family 50th Anniversary album, and Annie Lennox "Shining Light". All on cassettes.

Old age and economics can be good things when they make you realize what's really important ....

I am listening to WDVR-the best little station in the nation! It's a local station that is all amateurs. They play every thing from Tin Pan Alley to forties and fifties country to bluegrass to oldies rock and roll. They claim to be the only station left in the northeast with bluegrass shows. They also put on a live barn dance show once a month that's a hoot. It's worth a listen.

I just got a German bootleg of Sgt Peppers- it's the original mono mix, with extras. The same outtakes and stuff from those same 4 track sessions, I do believe- the same ones that are featured in the 50th anniversary releases.
I plan to immerse myself in the mono 4 track mix, then eventually buy the anniversary version which was remixed in Stereo by Giles Martin in 2017. Watched at least one Sgt Peppers film- young bands doing Sgt Peppers tracks in the original studio on the original 4 track machine, and will also see as many other Sgt Pep docs as possible.

Sort of celebrating the record allover again. Must admit it was never my favorite Beatles album but it is definitely worth revisiting. Not sure I ever. did have the original mono mix, as ahasty stereo mix was tossed together almost as an after thought- so lots of people got that...

I'll tell you, checking out some of the youtube street musician videos, like the drywall-pail drummer and the Pipe Guy, there is incredible talent out that has never done anything but bring pleasure to folks, never made anything for the musician beyond a few quarters or pound coins in a hat ....

I was watching Linkin Park vids on youtube last night when my son in law came over, I mentioned that I had a couple Linkin Park cds but my boom box in the garage had died. He said be right back and 15 minutes later he brought back 400w stereo, tuner, 5 disc changer, 2 speakers and and subwoofer. It sounds almost as good as my Pioneer system I have in the house, certainly better than anything I've ever had in the garage.
Kevin,
You have a surprisingly eclectic taste in music.
Seems like most guys my age just like rock music from one genre or another.
I was trained as a cellist as a young man. My tastes are all over the place, too. I played guitar in soul, rhythm and blues and rock bands as a teenager and young adult, but my real love is Jazz.
I'm not very good at it, but I still play and mostly jazz. I'm diggin' Dave Brubeck at the moment and a lot of the Latin jazz stuff.
Not stuck in the past although I play music from the past. Most recently Jean Luc Ponty has come back down to earth after quite a few years chasing that elusive African connection to western music.
Check out Life Enigma by him. It's ten years old now, but it will knock your socks off.

Cheers,
Bill

a cellist? lol . . .

you asked for it, bill.

music is timeless, placeless, and in its most deepest sense, without culture or origin also.

where do we come from? what language does a cello speak?

i don't know. all i know is what moves me.

regarding jazz, a lot of that seems to be based very little on structure and tradition, and much more on an immediate expression of sound, without attention to rules or convention. that's something really fundamental, like writing poetry on demand, a capello. i can't do that.

if you can play the cello, then you know that the music you can make is something that is sufficient unto itself. i am unsophisticated in musical abilty, but i listen, and what i hear is often significant to me. i don't look for comprehension any more, just for experience.

does that make sense?
Posted By: kevin Re: what music are you listening to now? - 07/23/17 3:56 am
You'll find Jazz populated by the highest levels of musicians seeking to push the envelope. Therefore, by definition, it's not intended for the general listening population.
I've had some excellent experiences, for example, I got to see Miles Davis in one of his last concerts. "Seeing" Miles Davis is a bit of a inside joke to jazz aficionados. He spent the majority of the concert in the back facing the speakers while he blew his horn.
The level on which Miles Davis performed was extremely technical. It was very structured for what is usually a free for all in Jazz. Frank Zappa was the same. He wrote every note he performed down on paper as did everyone in his band and each performance was played "to the note."
One thing I do appreciate is those musicians that never take themselves too seriously. Being a bad ass or bad to the bone removes all the good that music can bring and takes it into the realm of social commentary or something else I'm not interested in.
Cheers,
Bill

...I always try to avoid these music threads because I am a musician and very involved with music so my likes and point of views are kind of different than the people that are not so involved or just turn on the radio. All that could be mistaken by a sense of superiority etc that I do not have really; is like a specialized mechanic speaking stuff in some comment here and me, only a rider cannot get it at all; like the tuning numbers, lobe center et all.
However, HT you mentioned about African connection to western music, jazz, soul and like those; so may be you can take a few minutes to check (if you already do not know him) Nico Kasanda, better known by Dr Nico. With L African fiesta he did it pretty modern Souka in the 70s. The contemporary use of the well known Pentatonics came to America (mainly to US) from Malí but Dr Nico mixed it pretty well.
Souka, then in America Soca or Zemba o Semba then in America (in Brazil) Samba
welll...... you asked.

Kevin,
It is amazing the range of your likes.

Just went through this whole thread for the first time, some stuff I turned right off, but Thank You All, for the new stuff I was just turned ON to.

Growing up, my Dad had 78RPM records like;
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQuxe6r9cu4

A little later, things like; www.youtube.com/watch?v=KStsPPgeka4

I've always Liked; www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7F7kF3T32U, but I had to look a long time to find a version that was somewhat close to the version's pace I grew up with, instead of all the racetrack versions ahead of this one.. Grrrrrr....

I do like westerns such as; www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zoTLwrm9QE, and www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ivUOnnstpg, they tell a story, unlike the endless versions of; www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS4LCoh0VGQ. Yeah, I know some folks like this stuff.......

Dad was gone in '70 { not dead }, so I grew up with SoCal radio rock 'n roll, KROQ, and Alternative KNAC, among others. KHJ, before they went western? Grew to like folks like; www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXXl_siUfeg, www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQUXuQ6Zd9w, www.youtube.com/watch?v=9muzyOd4Lh8, and of course all the floyd; www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD_SlOqvhPs, Kinks; www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp_QkUVZGPc, CCR, and so many others. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEZH0t5Yozw, www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKNOlDtZluU&list=PL94gOvpr5yt2L8rnLwzbV9PDWyxC4xD-N

Had three 33RPM record collections stolen....

Went into the air farce in '77, and found; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhrMLbEhjKI, www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g9Hs3rnd6s, and www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFltXDMQsQQ along with my future Wife.
Out of the service, and two years later married, built a family and edging towards retirement now.

Heard many types of music in the last 40 years; www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5rHrD9eja0, www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn2TChegK9U, www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG3PnQ3tgzY, www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyCEexG9xjw, www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR4XNqrqxrU, www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V_xRb0x9aw, www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qcpc1aRmrqg&list=PLVyehhUaGFdX7pSErat6BDlwxoAdzJzcD especially the "Hell" track! Even www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnqj31VPNoE

Recently, had to find MWH safety dance, and found they had SO much more! www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zUUtf7gOe8
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T3N6a24A9I
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLAQEssYNjA

While exploring elsewheres, I found; www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9YtJC-Kd8. So VERY much to see in this! Yeah, as was said earlier, youtube is MUCH more entertaining than TV!

Oh yeah, the Beatles, my favorite track of theirs, "Hey Bulldog". www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4vbJQ-MrKo.

Started listening to Dr. Demento in Jr. High, and tried to listen until I no longer could find his shows. California, Idaho, Ohio.... Wierd, funny, striking, politically incorrect, catchy, suggestive, he had them all. I am REALLY tired of the "Fish Heads" 'song'.........
Weird Al got his start there, I believe...
YouTube is providing such an amazing connection to the music world right at home on your computer. Hopefully you have headphones or a good discreet sound system to use. I have those but use my TV of all things to listen to music most of the time because it's sound system is pretty good and customizable.

As an aside, don't support any efforts to change the internet or you may have to pay for every song you listen to in the future.

I sometimes listen to private parties who post their performances on Youtube. The world is just chock full of great musicians and the majority of them never get any recognition whatsoever. That's because the really passionate ones are not in the least interested in money or fame; just music.

As an amateur musician myself, it would be easy to get discouraged in the face of so much talent, but I persevere.

I've recently added two brand new guitars to my quivver and most recently a Roland GR-1 Guitar synthesizer. First generation, they're up to GR-55 now and over 20 years old, but what an amazing instrument.
And I've added a stereo digital recording microphone and an audio mixer program for my computer. I'm mixing tunes now and laying bass, drum, piano, strings, rhythm guitar on my loop pedal and playing along to my own tracks.

I'm having so much fun, it should be illegal. I'm actually pretty good on the vibraphones....

Cheers,
Bill

michael hedges. for some strange reason his life and mine ran along eerily parallel tracks for some years. he drove his bmw off a cliff in 1996.

this is one of his earlier pieces. david crosby tells how he listened to hedges play this sitting in the door of his VW bus, and was astounded.

...hey Kevin, except you and a few more, what I see (always saw this) is that the people are stuck in the same music, depending on the ages and countries, but always the same music of when they were teenagers. That s what I said before about that people are not interested in music actually or any other kind of art or artistic "product"

By the way, do you own or have the opportunity to listen music in a HIFI stereo?. The difference is beyond what you can hear in youtube (due to the mp3 encoding and computer non specialized audio cards)
Just few hours ago I did a test with the same song my laptop switched to the HIFI and listening a record that I have comprised (as all are for downloading) then listened with the CD player in the HIFI stereo.

Country music before 1965, on line thursday evenings krts marfa public radio. "Honky Tonk Happy Hour" and "The rockabillly show".

But now, for me, it's Ralph Stanley, "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning". "Rank Stranger" is one of the great songs of America's musical legacy.

Sister Rosetta Tharp is essential Sunday listening too.

Tonight it will be Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, Ike Turner, Bobby "Blue" Bland, that kind of thing.

Speaking of Sunday church music, foreigners here might not be familiar with certain American church practices. In the 1880s in a southern Protestant congregational denomination called the Church of Christ, a split called the Joyful Noise Controversy developed.
The church was composed of hard Scots-Irish border people, all thoroughly convinced of their own righteousness.
One faction, the Christian Evangelical, cited a bible verse exhorting the people to "make a joyful noise",during worship.
The other faction, the Firm Foundation, said that musical instruments like the piano and organ were un-biblical and banned them.
The split persists to this day, in many southern towns you will see both the Christian church (Disciples of Christ) and the Church of Christ. They persist in their beliefs about music. The latter sect believes in vocal music only, the former uses instruments and voice.
Our American church music, descended over generations from Germany, the British Isles, and Africa, is really a world treasure.
Im still on my George Harrison kick- a couple days ago, (thursday actually- ha) a radio station here had TBT (ThrowBack Thursday) playing Beatles solo works all day long. One of the most striking cuts was George Harrrrison playing slide blues guitar along side Alvin Lee. Bluest Blues. A real bittersweet moment, to hear both Alvin Lee (dead) of Ten Years After fame and Mr Harrison (also dead), two great musicians, both former life staples for me in my youth, playing together

This girl rocks. She goofed about two minutes in. You could see it in her eyes and she smiled at the tabla player. Hey but when you have to hit 10,000 notes in a tune, you're bound to goof some.

Now its an awesome tune ... Jimi hendrix and Lonnie Youngblood playing Georgia Blues !!! WOW !!!!

Since I got the GR-1, I almost never play just plain ole' guitar anymore. A lot of the music I play sounds great with sax, vibraphones, flute, piano, etc, etc.

I lay down tracks with rhyhthm guitar, bass, drums, then play along with above instruments. I also lay down background strings or vox (synthetic voices) which sounds awesome to me.

I'm almost ready to make a recording of about 8 tunes; A mix of originals, old standards, and arrangements. This gadget has opened up my music experience by an order of magnitude.

If I'd known it was this much fun I would have done this years ago. And it cost just under 200$. I recently spent 2500$ bucks on a new Les Paul that just sits there on the wall......I fitted my GR-1 pickup on a 500$ MIM Fender Jaguar and that's all I play now.

Cheers,
Bill

This unit has three hundred preset sounds on it with options to add more. The Roland GR series is now up to GR-55, with about five versions since the GR-1. I can't guess what the others have, but if I did, I'd say they probably made it more user friendly rather than adding a bunch more sounds.

You can spend up to about 8-900$ for a new unit.

I'm thinking of selling the Les Paul......played very little.

...as mentioned before I avoided to post clips here due to being a musician my criteria etc could be different, also that all these clips are compressed so you really cannot hear a musical piece this way; however I decided to put this one because have 100 years and I think that is one of the most important pieces showing a simple (yet beautiful) melody working in conjunction with noise with perfect results.
Also that most in this forum have English background or English language so you really be familiarized with these types of melodies.
All in acoustic environment. This is the most fiery version.
Would not be easy for you mostly but please give it an opportunity listening more than one time (and at least with phones but better with an amp) and may be (I hope) serves to open another type of musical path for many here.

John Kay, "Heretics and Privateers." He found his protest songs again. Also renewed my love for Missing Persons, a lot of Zappa musicians, there was some good music in the '80s (not much, but this qualifies.)
Tomorrow I have a stick with a lot of fast-tempo, mostly instrumental tunes loaded up for the ride to Barber: Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream, Al DiMeola, Dixie Dregs, Brand X, JS Bach (goes with the Beemer.)

...latin America is too extensive to think about that like the same thing all the way South. In fact there are really nothing in common except the language (at some point) and the Spanish conquerors.
So when you heard "latin jazz" "latin music"...well, more like Caribbean rhythms amalgam (except for bossa nova); even in a classic rock/pop a la Santana with his mixolydian solos is just Cuban, Mexican influences.
In this case this is other type of "latin" music; is from deepest Brazil and mainly you can imagine it like a Samba rhythm as a base but with a bit of indigenous (with that Spanish melting pot derivation some 500 years ago) and a bit of small town jungle vibe.

Here is the original recording of this single; however like all roots styles or genres, if you listen new recordings done with crappy digital keyboards, bad quality drums and horns, well, the final product is pretty poor.
Again, try to listen without losing the bass because is very important here.

I know that this can be very ugly for many here but I think that the point of Kevin Roberts is to fill that gap of us the music lovers.

1. go to the youtube video and copy the entire URL from the address bar (not any "share" text.)

2. go to the britbike reply window, select "use full editor,"

3. go to tbe media dropdown menu and select "youtube video"

4. paste the URL into the entry field, delete any duplicate text, and press enter.

5. save the new reply.

your computer or telephone or ipad or notebook may show your confirm choices as "done," or "ok," or "save," or whatever, but that's the procedure.

...hi Ricochetrider, well, after listening, I think there are tons of garage bands doing the same or similar stuff; even better, but without any success. The voice and lyrics are just not remarkable and without guts; the drums are less than basic; only two chords without anything. The only embellishment and is what works here, are the clapping hands and the distorted vibrato.

I'm a lucky guy with 1000's of albums/45's laying around and even a jukebox here and there if I want to hear a 3 minute single while brushing my teeth....But I had such a great time the other night when my daughter convinced me to go to the Gorillaz concert. So this is what I just listened to...

I like it. Listen to Lucky Penny, the out of phase guitar tone is awesome, I like the xylophone & pretty sure that's also a Farfisa. If you go deeper into you tube, theres an interview with Mr McPherson where he talks about the custom guitar he uses in Lucky Penny. The keyboard guy plays guitar and xylophone, and the other guitar player plays sax as well. I like the arty approach to the videos, and the overall vibe.

That music just feels good to me, and I would go see those guys in a heart beat- but we'll be out of the country in the next couple weeks when he comes up the East Coast! frown

...so I am listening this other tune; and like you say is better. Still a basic old type of song but good tone, better embellishments, better drum breaks; yes, the mood of the clips is nice. May be is because you are so accustomed to the big leagues and I am still into the "alley" scene. I played and worked in festivals with all these types of bands.
Man, indeed you have a great job; moving from country to country...that really fit me, but no luck to meet the right person to enter that field.
Well I actually only work from town to town, all country-to-country travel is strictly for fun. My work, which I am VERY lucky to enjoy quite a lot, is a good gig, if not exhausting and all consuming.
I look forward to a couple weeks in England on the cold & wet west coast, hanging out with friends, walking around, and taking photos. And drinking some English Ales while Im at it!

Getting a bit further into this guy's music, it does seem like he could on one hand be slotted into the faux rockabilly scene, but I think he has his heart in it, and there are elements of all manner of things in at least some of his work. If you listen to him talking about his guitar, you can see he has some depth of knowledge about other guitar players and their history within the realm of what he is doing.

I think there is some art to his approach, vaguely sort of in the same vein as Jack White. Nowhere near the same level of intensity, musically, but more in the way the videos look, set up, style, etc.

Yes, my being subjected to the "big leagues" does has its ups ad downs, but that's probably why I find this refreshing, because it's not going to fill a 20,000 seat arena, and the band still seems to care about what they are doing. Although, Guns N Roses seemed to have their hearts in it last night, for all that is worth. 20,000 rabid, avid fans going bananas in the joint sure helped the vibe. laughing Funny but I had truss spot gigs for Halsey (yuk), Faith Hill & Tim McGraw (YUK) and finally Guns N Roses, all the past week. So I had to slog thru piles of garbage to get to the good stuff! grin

I guess my point is that the Big Leagues aren't all that, IMO - but a guy like JD Mcpherson, while not terribly original, keeps it real.
Unlike GnR, Im pretty sure Mr McPherson does NOT use tele-prompters so he can remember the words to his songs! crazy

cheers brother!
have a great day.

That's why he had so much trouble finding drummers. Terry Bozio was the only one who could play "Black Page." Ruth Underwood is a goddess of percussion!
BTW: I figured out Zappa's guitar solos. He was a drummer before he picked up a guitar. His solos are filled with 13-stroke open rolls, played on guitar.

Heavy hitting stuff right there! Imelda May is awesome... but so are Jeff Buckley & Mavis Staples! Saw Imelda May a few. years back with her band and Jeff Beck doing the Tribute To Les Paul tour. It was pretty cool, to understate it a quite a bit.

I've been pondering this question for some time now. What music do I listen to, anyway? Truthfully, not my jazz or classical music collection or even my rock and blues collection....now 95% of the time I listen to my own music. What I listen to now is my own playing and my recordings of some jazz standards, some of my own originals, and some pre recorded jam tracks I play along to.
I play guitar, but only a small amount of what I play is actually guitar. I play through a synthesizer. I can play any one of 300 instruments. I lay down my own tracks in acoustic bass, rhythm guitar, piano, vibraphones to pre recorded drum tracks, mostly. Then I play along with those tracks with sax, flute, trumpet or any one of many solo instruments.
I have about an hour's worth of music committed to memory. Just a couple of weeks ago, I did something I have never done. I loaded up my equipment and drove over to a friend's house and played about a half hour's worth of my songs. Now, this woman is just flat gorgeous, bright, funny, and genuinely sweet. Think Kim Basinger, but prettier....
This was extremely difficult for me to do. I am NOT the performer type. More the composer/arranger type.
But that just goes along with my own drive to improve what I do. I'm persistently trying to improve every aspect of my music. So what I can do now will most certainly change in the near future as I learn how to do things better.
So, this recording is a work in progress. Please keep that in mind if you chose to listen to this.
This video was done mainly to visually describe the process of learning a new song(this was an extremely difficult song for me to wrap my head around) and the equipment and process necessary to record it. My equipment is definitely budget type. In the future I hope to acquire better recording equipment, but for now, this is what I have to work with.
Be sure to read the description on the youtube page, too.

Cheers,
Bill

good job!!

I would love to be at that level, but I have a 3 chord limit!

I do mess with some vintage recording stuff. All tubes...1950's Ampex and Magnecorder Reel to Reel, also have RCA 74/77 ribbon mics...All mono and one you get one go at it! Hope to get a solid 60 seconds, maybe someday....

Thanks,
Yeah, this one was a challenge for me. Gotta keep the challenges coming or you never improve....
Something like 20 distinctly different chords in this piece with sometimes four chords per measure. It was overwhelming at first, but now it rolls right out nice and easy.
All my analog stuff died years ago.....I dont' know how you can keep the stuff working unless you're good at soldering....

Been going through different recordings of the same thing, Bach Toccata in D Minor, BMV 565. I have a version played by E. Power Biggs on my riding-tunes stick, but I'm not happy with the way he plays it. The only other versions I have are on LP, will need to digitize.
Also need to find a copy of Die Valkure. It's only fitting for riding the Beemer.

Interesting how people’s interpretation and the visual pictures drawn by music can change over the years:

Here’s Julian Fucik’s great fanfare “Entry of the Gladiators”, written to represent the spectacle of gladiators entering a Roman area, there to struggle, fight, and to live or die ….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0CyOAO8y0

Or pity poor Jacques Offenbach, who wrote “The Infernal Gallop” representing Orpheus in a mad ride through Hell in his operetta  Orphée aux Enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) ….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okQRnHvw3is

You can jump to 1:10 if you’re impatient …..

I’ll bet the composers never planned on the association we have today with these … !

I've had a handful of small and clean components upstairs in the living room (amp, pre amp, FM receiver, CD player, & the taller Tannoy speakers) but I think I'm going to figure out what all my best stuff is and move it al into play, then sell off all the excess gear.

I got in on Blue Oyster Cult back in the early, so-called "Black & White" days when they had their 1st three albums out (all with B&W covers- hence "Black and White").
They were a 3 guitar striahgt-up rock band (from Long Island) that kicked serious butt.
Here's Cities On Flame live from back before they started getting real popular:

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/tn6Bsg32AI8

Live in NYC 12/31/73
Dominance & Submission:

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/Dr4Npg_SStY

Hot Raiis To Hell:

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/pc9PPy0jzc8

Here's another throw-back to my crazed youth:

Mountain, from the 1st live record, Mountain Live (The Road Goes Ever On)

Leslie West at maybe his very best, the band in their prime with the great Felix Pappalardi on bass, alternating lead vocals with Mr West - I just read Felix Pappalardi was shot & killed by wife Gail Collins- who did the artwork on Mountain's record covers!
Mountain was a great band! Man this takes me back... good times. I was 15 when this album was in heavy rotation on my turntable... you can bet I had it cranked up LOUD. ha ha

Long Red

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/FFZgDRqGb10

Crossroader

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/4vWOEsMjJ3s

I'll add this record to my list of favorite Live Albums:

in no particular order:

Rolling Stones: Get Yer Ya Yas Out- just awesome, Stones at their very best with Mick Taylor- just great form, some killer solos and breakdowns. The entire band is just great here. Highlight: Sympathy For The Devil

Mountain: Live (The Road Goes Ever On) A great live record from a really solid band in peak form.
Highlight: Long Red

Humble Pie: Rockin The Fillmore A stellar live set from Steve Marriott's blues based rock band that happened to have Peter Frampton in it for a while.
Highlights: I Don't Need No Doctor, Walk On Guilded Splinters

Lou Reed: Rock & Roll Animal An awesome live record from Lou Reed in his post Velvet Underground days in NYC... Guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter are stunningly good on this record of mostly V.U. songs.
Highlight: Sweet Jane, with its soaring Intro.
"Readers of Guitar World ranked the Hunter/Wagner solos on the 1973 live version of "Sweet Jane" 81st among the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of all time."

Not on my "faves" list but see also, the also-solid Lou Reed Live- a 2nd live, follow-up album that was actually the same concert as Rock & Roll Animal. Steve Hunter came out of Mitch Ryder's band early 70s band Detroit, and then went on to be in Alice Cooper's killer band in the mid 70s. In addition, Steve Hunter played another guitar thing you might be familiar with: the opening guitar track on Aerosmith's Train Kept A Rollin! Dick Wagner did the arrangements for Lou Reed's songs they adopted from Velvet Underground and went on with Steve Hunter, to also play in Alice Cooper's band, among other accomplishments in his career.

Just for fun:
Mitch Ryder's band, Detroit: the full album on youtube.

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/lwdbd8xU5p4

I swear there's another Live album on my "faves" list.... but can't recall what it is just now.... (hint: It's NOT Frampton Comes Alive)

i've been listening to this over and over. i can't figure out how someone can hold this in his head.

amazing. i just don't understand what music is or how it comes out.

i've read that people can visualize no more than five things in their head at a time. for me, it's more like three. if i go to the store to buy stuff, and there's more than three items, i come back with only three, because as soon as i memorize a fourth, i forget one i had memorized already.

but i can get around that by arranging things in groups of three, with each member of the group being another list of three things, and each of those members being another list . . . and so on. so i can remember nine things by memorizing only three things. or on a good day, twenty-seven.

i wonder if music is like that? where a complex multi-part composition is broken down into smaller and smaller groups, until the bits are small enough to manage, and then the entire thing is assembled piece by piece during playing without conscious thought? can any iof you musicians answer that? is it like poetry, or like finding your way home without thinking?

is it a language, or more like a painting?
Out in the shop, crankin' Procol Harum.

Kevin,
I'm pretty sure you just described musical "arrangements". Not that I know exactly, but I imagine that arrangements for songs or pieces of music are "built" in exactly the as you described: broken into segments, guitar, bass, drums, keys; strings or orchestral bits; vocals, etc. then put together according to the artist's vision of how they want the piece to sound. The Bowie piece is a good example of a complex arrangement for the song and all its parts.
It all begins with a demo of the basic song structure and grows from there.

that makes, sense, but how can you possibly put it together to play? it's the mind that has to regenerate the whole piece.

i once listened to a woman play moussgorsky's pictures at an exhibition at a masters recital, on piano, the way it was supposed to be before ravel messed with it. no musical score, just in her head. i can't do anything like that.

i don't know, but i'll bet it's the same as learning the isle of man, or the nurburgring:

Kevin,
that person who can do this with music is probably wondering how anyone can possibly take an entire motorcycle apart and put it back together! Folks is good at what they're good at, and we all stick to what we know, man.

I was fortunate enough to see the Allman Bros a few times back when- 1st concert in 1971 less than a month after Duane's death, then in the late 90s and again in early 2000s. Last summer, Gregg Allman played in Hershey and I sat beside the stage looking on, all thru his short (45 mins, maybe 1 hour long) set.
Always great, always a good time. The Allman Brothers Band came out to play every time. Played for like 2.5 to 3 Hous with no breaks. What a life.

What I really loved about Ronson was his ability to tune in mid solo. He'd notice a string out of tune and do a bluegrass string bend with the tuning peg to get it right, all part of the solo. When I saw Bowie he had Frampton or Andian Belew. Only got to see Ronson with Ian Hunter.

Mick Ronson probably has greater recognition now than when he was alive, a unique style. I do occasionally wonder what instrumental versions of Ziggy Stardust (the single) and Jean Genie would sound like.

I listen to "Heroes" more now than forty years ago, Robert Fripp was good, but Ronson would have been better.

The lad from 'ull did well.

PS Don't get the wrong idea. I haven't watched an episode of the X files in years. I'm not a UFO nutter. I did get interested in the idea a bit when the US government released three fighter jet gun camera videos this year with these things in the cross-hairs. I've been looking into it, but frankly, there isn't much there. A lot of kooks with their tin foil hats on too tight.

they say that when asked to do a soundtrack, they just went into their music library and asked, how about these?

Quick question to settle an argument between two people who are not musicians.

Does the word "musician" cover singers or is it only for people who play instruments?

We were listening to some Elvis music (like him or not, the guy had a voice and could make it do what he wanted), and one person said that Elvis was a really good musician. Someone else said that no, he didn't really play an instrument (was the guitar real or just a prop for him?) and wasn't a musician.

Lannis,
Just my opinion but it seems the word musician implies playing music i.e. on an instrument. Singer, songwriter, performer, composer, artist... many words describe people who sing and perform their own and other peoples' songs, compositions, pieces etc... When I hear the word "musician", I imagine one who plays music.

Maybe that's just me.

On my late-night (early morning?) forays to & from Washington, DC, I listen to a Towson, MD radio station the call letters of which are WTMD. One song in rotation there that has gotten my attention lately is JD Wilkes' song "Walk Between The Raindrops". JD is, apparently, the lead singer of The Legendary Shack Shakers. Kind of Tom Waits-ish (except shorter) with an almost Duke Robillard- ish guitar solo.... I LIKES it.

myo͞oˈziSHən/Submit
noun
a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented.

Further definitions include entertainer, which is someone who may sing, play an instrument or really just anything for the amusement of others.

Being a stage or recording musician is possible without being an entertainer.

Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight.

It takes a lot for me just to post a youtube video, or even play my instruments in front of someone.

I'll leave that for the entertainers for the most part.

Cheers,
Bill

PS Frank Zappa was a composer first, really extraordinary person. You should check out one of his first performances on the Ed Sullivan show in the early 60's via youtube. He was really strange even then.
I think he might even be seen as a musical philosopher without too much of a stretch.

That Lou Reed Rock And Roll Animal record, and the subsequent "Lou Reed Live" record are both really great live albums, both recorded at the same show. Between the 2 records, we get that entire concert! That band with Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter was nothing less than amazing. Both went on to also play in an Alice Cooper band, Dick Wagner was really tied in to Alice Cooper for some time beef and after Lou Reed. Steve Hunter had spent time playing with Mitch Ryder prior to Lou Reed.

Here's a great INTERVIEW ARTICLE with both guitarists.

Today has been a day of old style rock.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SJUdmKQblo
went to a tribufest here on friday night. A local AC-DC and UK GNR

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSPI2vVc80o

Since an early age I've always instinctively hated this kind of music and I was right. They were both apparently very good at mimicking their respective bands so it wasn't a lack of technical skills. No they were both excellent musically (in fact the Tenerife band were better IMHO) Both were for my tender ears absolutely dreadful

I knew -I think- 1 AC-DC track and about 3 GNR. ones (possibly but I cannot remember) I thought on the whole, AC-DC were quite insulting. chanting "If you like rock and roll I salute you" (or something like that) for 5 minutes was their attempt at meaningful lyrics..hmmm okkkay

the 'famous' track(s) of GNR were ok I am happy to admit, but the rest of their repertoire pure shite :-)

This was my first real exposure to this kind of 'rock' and it will definitely be the last, despite how much I love my GF!

To sum up: 'not my cup of tea'

...the other day I bought (other person did this favor) the McCartney last one as a present for my mother that is a Beatles fan.
Listening a few times on a HIFI stereo; I think that the mix is not correct overall, specially on the second track. There s no "air" and in first listening, the sound is kind of muddy. This is very strange with the big leagues studios.
I do not have the UK edition but doubt that the master would be different...
-May be this could be his last record so is a bit disappointed regarding composition, only the last track has different parts and changes.
Not so good embellishments or arranges.
Please understand that the record is good but is one done by a great and seasoned musician hence my position.
The songs are good and couple are very good but there s no any gem. He plays most instruments so no doubt that the problem is with the mix.
The lyrics are more risky than others that he has.

Recently attended a show titled: "A Night With Janis Joplin". For die-hard JJ fans ( yours truly).....I was blown away. The guard on the way in said: "It's a great show.....but really loud!"
To which I replied: "with my present state of hearing, the louder the better!" He was not joking, my ears rang for days....but I didn't care. It was just super hearing "Piece of My Heart, Summertime, Ball & Chain, et al" performed
live by an outstanding cast. The reason for the quote above is that I realize her sound was not for everyone. If we all liked the same stuff what a boring world it would be. I found a UTube recording of Janis & Big Brother (before she was really known) doing "Ball & Chain" at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. I think it's a fitting measure for determining whether you might be a JJ fan or not....if it doesn't speak to you, then it doesn't, no harm in that. But if it DOES, then your reaction will be much the same as that of "Mama Cass" who is shown in the audience at the end clearly saying one word: "WOW!!"

when i heard this song a few months back here in Hamburg on Rock Station Radio, i was not sure if it is Led Zeppelin in early days or not...!
Yesterday they played live here in town, and i thought about it to see them live. The concert was sold out and was as good as expected.
Wonder if they are going through the roof in the states?
They are shooting stars here in the radio stations. Robert Plant was interviewed and he said he hate them (for being younger as he is). No, he was kidding. I guess they will have a future with their music.
I like it.
Posted By: Lannis Re: what music are you listening to now? - 11/01/18 7:01 pm
I like it too ... like one of the commenters said, if you have a voice like that (as if Robert Plant and Geddy Lee were your daddies) you almost HAVE to sing Zeppelin covers.

You can tell that they're young, though .... the rhythm sometimes "leans back" a little, a fraction of a beat behind where it should be, instead of driving inexorably forward like LZ.

They'll get there, though!! Great musicians already ...

Saw Janis Joplin (the real thing) at Fillmore West in, I think, 1968. Pretty amazing live show. And for sure, my ears rang when I came out.

Linker48x, I'm envious....

In '68 I was in Uncle Sam's Navy, one of my great regrets will always be that I never saw Janis live, ESPECIALLY at the Fillmore & at that time.
As for ringing ears: well worth the experience & the memories, don'tcha think.....?!!

Rory Gallagher is good...still remember listening to him in Taste and then later...his Irish Tour album was terrific.

This is something totally different, but has a Motorcycle theme [sort of], great song, you never want it to finish.

One to rip into: Their album 'The Shape of Punk to Come' is an underground classic.

I'm moving into a new house. Still deciding on the first tune I'll play.
It's either "Sweet Jane" from Rock 'n' Roll Animal, or maybe "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll" from The Hoople.
Either way, the neighbors will know that I've arrived.
Rock n Roll Animal is an all time classic. Hunter, Wagner and John defined Lou and his songwriting like never before or since [although he went on to make some great albums]. Personally Heroin and Rock n Roll are my faves. Although Waiting for my Man [from the same set if not album] is a pretty good tune as well.

Here's one for next year, the Album "True North" is not out until February 2019, but I love this guys music, I have some of his other stuff....

Michael Chapman "It's too Late"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvaYkPCs_rY
[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/zqNTltOGh5c

Miles Davis. I was lucky to see him in concert. "See him" is a bit figurative since he typically would face the speakers at the back of the stage.
He died the year later.

Title is "So What?" one of his most famous tunes.

My late riding buddy's widow gave me a copy of his .mp3 USB stick, it had over 5,000 songs on it from VERY different artists. I have the stick plugged into my truck radio, set to "random play".

This morning, a golden oldie I haven't heard in MANY years:

"I Can Feel Him in the Morning"

Grand Funk Railroad, "Survival" LP, Capitol Records, 1971

Brought back a flood of teenage & dirt bike memories. I especially like Don Brewer's drumming...

Ok - I got to sing (1st Tenor) this a couple of days ago with the Atlanta Schola Cantorum.
How lucky I am I cannot tell.

fantasia drives me nuts, because disney took the rite of spring and re-ordered the parts to fit his animation. i can't listen to his version without getting confused.

supposedly disney went to stravinsky and said, "we're going to use the rite of spring in my movie. here's $5000. if you won't take it, we'll use your music anyway and not pay you."

weirdo [***] from a late night radio broadcast. Cool bass line, floating, ethereal synth textures, whacko lyrics. Overall score: cool as a one-off and the mood was right at 130AM on a rainy drive home from a gig.
Described in "comments" as "the haunted seaside carnival-on-a-pier aesthetic"

cons: Songs seem similar.
pros: Possibly not for everyone. Damon Albam (Blur, Gorillaz) seems to be everywhere right now.
YMMV

This is an opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's celebrated and significant early body of work played live, including songs from albums The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and A Saucerful Of Secrets."

glass is 82 years old. but listen to this.

the whole thing

the thing that fascinates me about glass's music is that his work is never hurried. it may have a hugely rapid tempo, but there's always a measured awareness of the sufficiency of time. on the rare occasions when he does hurry, it's because he is making a point.
Posted By: kevin Re: what music are you listening to now? - 03/18/19 10:35 pm

i can't get glass out of my head.

his music is abstract, like mozart but without the need for conventional structure or avoidance of repetition. it's the kind of thing that could be thought of as a good film score, but it would keep dominating the presentation.

i first encountered glass many years ago when he cut the score for the motion picture koyaanasquatsi. i watched it in a small cinema in arizona with a bunch of hopis.

...hi Kevin; Glass has some great things no doubt

hello Tom, I checked your buddies clip; the video is well done; some things reminds me The Beatles but the songs is too predictable and lacks power.

The other band; I forgot about them. What transform for better their songs is the MIX; great sound engineer and the drums with that particular sound is fantastic; so you transform a simple rhythm in a great deep fat sound. The other sub sounds in the mix help a lot too.
Also no doubt that there are plenty of production (read money) behind.

Hi Gavin, great song of the Congos; did not know about it.

Right now I am listening this absolutely fantastic song.
Check the guitar riff after the firsts sentences. Check the other guitar parts and the lyrics.
But most important, check the song structure.
This is modern rock so is not for every body. The thing with this song and many for F Black is that seems simple but not and no matter the structure still remains "similar" to a conventional song.
This upload is not good quality.

...hi Tom, I listened both, first one reminds me some bands from the early 80s.

The other one is ok but the last guitar part is very good; also the recording is just perfect; organic fat sound and we are listening in low (MP3) quality.

This also have a very good and different guitar arranges.

Because..

Dr Feelgood, Wilko is just plain mad, but brilliant in equal measure. I have long been a fan
Wilko Johnson is left handed. He learned to play a lefty guitar left-handed, but then felt he was mediocre, so he re-learned to play a normal guitar right-handed.

Wilko had lessons from Mick Green, who was renowned for playing simultaneous rhythm and lead in Johnny Kidd and the Pirates and then the revived Pirates. Wilko’s own style was unique in his Feelgoods days although he must have been copied a few times by now.

Watch how his right hand does plain strumming with bare fingers, while fretting and muting strings with his dominant left hand.

I finally broke the seal on my Hendrix reissue LP. Are you Experienced: first album I ever bought, first album played in my new house.
Hard to believe that it took them only a week to produce this album with 1967 tech. All of 8 tracks, with Kramer and Hendrix both working the console.

After that it was Gentle Giant and some Bach organ works. What can I say, I like weird time and key changes.

I've loved this song since I can remember. Seeing them do it live at the most notable music fest in history would have been epic !
I saw them [Canned Heat] in the early '80's a couple of times at Broadford.....a 3 day concert out of Melbourne run by the HA. They played from around 12 midnight till almost sunup. They had guys from aussie bands join them on stage and do cameo's. Epic stuff.

I realise that not all original members were there, but it was still a great line up and terrific show. They even ended up putting out a CD of the concert, which I have.
Canned Heat was one of my favorite bans as a kid- as soon as I heard them on the Woodstock record, I was locked. They did quite a bot of work with John Lee Hooker, all of which is great.

yeah Koan I like Prog Rock - not so trendy these days I know, but there are still great bands out there bucking the trend like Porcupine Tree, Crippled Black Phoenix, Still Corners, Black Mountain etc plus we have some great older bands like Yes, King Crimson, Hawkwind and Pink Floyd to name a few.

Posted By: koan58 Re: what music are you listening to now? - 06/15/19 3:40 am
Nice one t150. We actually had Hawkwind hosting (2010) the first festival on the 1970 site since that original. As a Hawkfest, it was a 700 peeps psychedelic dream. The only festival held on the same land. Twas almost religious, if it weren't for the drink and drugs.

When I read what I wrote, it seemed confusing, so what was intended is that was a Hawkwind gathering on the original festival (1970) site at Afton, the one and only time it has been used since, just happened to be Hawkwind's 40th anniversary as well.
The irony was that Hawkwind weren't invited to play at the festival, instead they played for free just outside the gate, as their protest against profiteering in music.
So it was lovely that 40 years later they took it as their own. Fortunately, only Hawkfreaks and locals knew about it, so it was a beautiful and peaceful gathering, no commerce or [***].
It wasn't a festival, just the nicest easy group of chilled ones. Even Lemmy made a guest appearance because of the occasion, guess what he sang with them.

Wow ! Where was that Steve ?
I was living in Colorado Springs at that time Jon, but I think the concert was probably Denver... Springs didn't support that level stuff at the time. Bud, we're talking truly fuzzy times... for them to have left an impression is really quite a testament.

That's pretty cool ! I've been to Colorado Springs/Fort Carson and it has no doubt grown exponentially since then. So, that means that they found their way to the U.S. and that makes me wonder why I have never heard of them. Weird !

Influential avante garde? a big F You to the record label? unlistenable? pure noise for noise' sake? self indulgent garbage? the sweetest sounds ever made?

Call it what you will but it stands today as strong and weird as ever. If the entire point of art is to evoke a reaction or emotion, Metal Machine Music has succeeded as art- if not as "music".

A treat from my wife.
On Monday of this week we went two miles down the road to Metlife Stadium (still called Giants Stadium locally) for a Rolling Stones concert.
Fantastic music and Mick Jagger is such a great showman.
I worked it out afterwards.
I last saw them live 53 or 54 years ago in the local town hall where I lived in England when they were just starting out.
The ticket then cost about $2.
This weeks tickets cost a lot more!

Hard to believe that they could get that balance of sound just sitting around that room full of furniture.

Also, what happens when the lead singer takes a really deep breath?

When i was putting in 10 to 14 hours behind the wheel it was
In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson of course and
Todd Rudgrens Utopia.
When Cassets were in I had both Soft machines Tripple Echo & Zappers Shut Up & Play Your Guitar in the van as well.

Now days on a long drive I am more into audio books but you can't do that is you are working & have to be in & out all of the time.

Unfortunately I hung around with musios a when young so can not tollerate badly recorded music full of over produced instruments fighting each other and drowing out the vocalist who has to scream rather than sing.
Thus 99% of the rock music recorded after 1990 ( & 50% before then ) never shall enter these ears.

Country is out cause I can't drive while crying & blues tends to make one tap their feet , not good behind the wheel.

That reminds me of when I was a teenager, when I got in bed at night I would stack 3 or 4 LPs on the record player (Stones, Guess Who, Who, etc) but this was always the last album on the stack, and it's the one I went to sleep by.

I fell asleep in my chair just now listening to it ... That fadeout of "I'm getting closer to my home" with the violins is the ultimate lullaby for me ...

Just did over 1,800 miles from central Texas to northern Alabama, then back by way of south Louisiana, to pick up a bunch of ultralight airplane parts (used in Alabama, new in Louisiana). All by myself, so the music selection was 100% mine, and I could crank it up as high as I wanted.

I have noticed lately since I added several thousand more .mp3 tunes from my late friend's ipod, that I was DEFINITELY missing out on the lower half of the alphabetical order. Maybe a corrupt file table, or the stereo couldn't read that high, but by golly, I wanted to hear a bunch of stuff I hadn't heard in quite a while. So, before hitting the road, I edited my thumb drive and cut everything above the letter "S" (I have hard copies on my laptop & backup drive).

My main reason was to get at:

Sweet Comfort Band
The Kinks
The Moody Blues
The Who

Almost half the trip (1-1/2 days) was nothing but the Moody Blues.

Great trip.

[Linked Image from pic20.picturetrail.com]

Main reason for the trip was those long wing spars laying on the left side of the trailer. Most of the rest (in the truck bed) including an engine and a ton of structural tubes were freebies!

Just watched the Woodstock 50th anniversary on netflix .... Very interesting... The original woodstock movie was all about the music . This one is about everything before and during the event including interviews with people who were there.... Worth a watch for sure ... It makes you realize why Woodstock became the cultural defining event that it was. Some of it was luck and a whole lot of good people . The towns folks and the attendees as well as those who were part of the show....

Hahaha...….weatherboard joint.

It could be called something else, I called it a clapboard because it looks like the thing they use when shooting movie scenes....eg "Gone with the Wind", Scene 4, Take 3", then they bang it closed [no idea why, maybe a 'silence on set' prompt?].

I remember when I was about 10 my oldest brother and a cousin of the same age bought the new 'Stones "Ruby Tuesday" record (45).

I was consigned to giving up my bed for my cousin to sleep in, so I was sleeping on the couch next to the record player. They set the player to repeat and it played ALL NIGHT LONG.

In the morning, they asked me if I could sing it, and I said "no" (but I could, and still can - in my head)

years ago i would sit in my living room and build frames for my beehives listening to laurie anderson. my jig only made ten at a time, although later ones i built made thirty. i never managed to get up to 100 frames per hour, but i could do 90. her music always reminds me of freshly-sawn white pine, melted beeswax, and the roar of our air compressor in the kitchen in the next room.

spectacular performance artist, musician, and poet.

even though i never managed 100 frames in an hour, i did manage to acquire enough skill to measure, skin, and stuff museum-mounts of mice in 12 minutes. i suppose that skill is rarer than making frames.

"I thought that i was the only person who owns a hawwkwind album"

i built my first Beesa to the sounds of "X in search of Space."
Still have the giant gate fold super psychedelic Live album.
As a wannabe bass player i always liked Lemmy, Hawkwind wasnt the same without him.
Compared to some of the stuff from that era it has lasted the test of time fairly well, may even have been years ahead.

never saw them live , but i once fed Simon, one of their lighting roadies, a full Scottish breakfast with Stornoway Black Pudding.
John Lyddon / rotten of the Sex pistols has commented on how the Hawkwind sound was influential to their sound. Weird eh!

I'm listening to a couple things, first- I got onto these compilations of early (1950s, maybe 60s and earlier) "country" music from of all places, Africa. Apparently some mining company imported heavily edited western films featuring singing cowboys from the 30s? 40? into mining camps in South Africa, as a respite from brutal conditions there. The music apparently caught on, perhaps unsurprisingly. The record label Olvido Rcords has all these cool, historical recordings of various artists and lots of stuff to listen to on their website. It's interesting, acoustic fingerpicking, with all manner of instrumentation. Sounds almost classical at times. It's very cool, and sort of brings some of the more modern Afropop and African guitar sounds full circle.

Check it out :Olvido Records Website

OK back to the "real" world... Driving home yesterday, The radio station I had on was revisiting the year 2003. They played these 3 songs back to back and man it made for some great drive time!

Drive By Truckers are a VERY cool band that's been around a while. If you've not got onto them, you better get with the program, friend. Listen to the soaring guitars on Decoration Day.
but first, some reading to bring you up to speed

Does anyone sit down and listen to anything, preferably from an analog source, or is the whole world YouTube videos? I guess they're free, but you get what you pay for.
Today I listened to some Jeff Beck and some Jan Hammer while sorting my studio. Hard to believe how many IEC power cables and 1/4" patch cables I've collected over the years.
Right now I'm copying some old audio files from a SCSI drive in order to use them on a more modern Mac. Still amazed that an old full-height SCSI drive even works, it's about 35 years old. They just don't make hard drives like they used to.
David, yes, out in the shop (detached 2-car). Some years ago I moved my 1988-vintage Tecnics stereo out of the house so that I could pump up the volume, CDs, vinyl, and FM.

Many acoustic guitar players do this when they play live using a direct box. One can buy plastic plugs for this. It does reduce feedback through the vocal microphone.
You haven't lived until you try to run sound for an acoustic band when no one uses a direct box. All those Martin dreadnoughts waving their sound holes around in a small club on a humid night with every mic howling.

I happen to have a Denon amp and a Thorens TD 26MKII turntable also running through some Bose speakers in the house and some old 12 in. pioneers out in my shop.

This is analog world in my old space. MCI JH110c 4-track, 1/2", Revox PR99 2-track high speed with DBX noise reduction, Thorens TD180 turntable.
I'm still organizing in my new space. Ramsa WRDA7 console. Monitors are Tannoy tops and an old AR2 connected woofer only as a sub. Powered with an Ashly MOSFET, and a QSC bridged mono amp respectively. The turntable now lives in my living room.

The deaths of most people in Show Business don’t usually get to me. Hell death doesn’t usually make me too emotional until it’s somebody REAL close. Call me jaded or whatever. After so many people in my life have died, I’ve come to view it as the same as birth. Just one of the three parts of living: birth, life, & death, in which birth and death are interchangeable and life is what you make it.

John Prine tho. His first album came out in 1970 or so. I’ve felt all along as though I’ve known him- having friends in Nashville, I’ve gotten to hear stories lately- recently, of his hanging out in town, of his being right in there as an active and socially engaging and totally accessible member of the local music scene and their community.

John Prine has some special stuff going on without a doubt. Yet remained humble and acted as if even he wasn’t 100% sure where his words came from or how he even managed to get them all together to form songs. I’ve been listening to his songs, to interviews, and reading articles about him. Fortunately I got to see him perform definitely on 2 occasions, decades apart- and I FEEL like I saw him a third time in there somewhere between the 2. Although maybe it’s just because he’s always been in my head? Been a significant part of my life’s music? The most recent time I saw him perform was just 2 years ago. Maybe 1/3 or more of his performance was songs from that first record! They still had the exact same impact as they did when I first heard them, when I was 16. I laughed, I cried, my heart soared! I rejoiced in wonder at how a set of songs could have that kind of lasting impact. That touches you the same after all these years, after hearing them hundreds and hundreds of times.

No other musician’s work does that to me- with the possible exception of Jackson Browne whose first few records came straight at me in a more deeply personal way. John Prine’s songs are far more accessible to everybody because his folksy way of writing is so naturally.... all inclusive? Straightforward? Down-home-y? The magic of John Prine’s songwriting is that his words cut across all barriers of time and aging and place. They are written in such a way that your great grandmother can relate to them as easily as your 14 year old son would. Some songwriters write from within; their songs, as a result, can only be felt by those who’ve experienced similar things. John Prine’s songs come to us, through him, from the entire universe, seemingly from all human existence.

I feel like I’ve lost a brother. We have lost an American Treasure. This ARTICLE is great and seems so typical of the guy I thought I knew all these years, all these DECADES, all my life.

John Prine: turns out he is exactly the guy you always wanted to believe he was.
Sweet.
Humble.
Loving.
An accidental genius.
I hope he Rests In Peace, where ever he is now.

Turns out the last recording of John Prine wasn’t too long ago. An old cult soul singer named Swamp Dogg- who I gotta admit never having heard of- covered Sam Stone back in the 70s. He and John Prine became friends, and apparently seemed to have reconnected in recent years. John Prine made a guest appearance on this pretty recent record as the two performers sing a duet, in the eerily prescient Let Me Go Round Again.

John Prine sings a song from his own last record- live:
The Lonesome Friends Of Science. He had a life-long gift. He never lost it.
An amazing wordsmith, with musical accompaniment.

Cheers, y’all safe safe and well, OK, please?
An old fav...

Have to actually go to www.youtube.com and search for song. Copy url(www.youtube.com) and select media, youtube video and paste the url in middle. I had same problem and figured it out. The key was going to website instead of just google search.

Open you tube, select a video. Copy the "youtube.com/whatever-video-you-have-up" URL in your computer's url bar/space/whateveryacallit and paste it into the "media/youtube" link provider mechanism here in full editor version.

Forget all the "sharing" options shown below the video on the you tube page.

Just like you can't say that there is any "Best Looking Woman", because there are so many types of women, or you can't say there's a "Best Looking Motorcycle", so that it wouldn't be reasonable to say that Gloria Grahame is "better looking" than Susan Anton .... and because there are so many types of motorcycles, it doesn't make sense to say that an MV Agusta is "better looking" than a Crocker ....

you can't really say that there's a "Best Guitar Solo", because there's everyone from Segovia to Thorogood, playing so many different styles.

But for this genre of guitar, I think that the bold statement attached to this one is probably right. Certainly MY favorite ...

I just saw that the Raconteurs (Think Jack White) did a redo of the famous "Blank Generation". There is a pretty good mini documentary on youtube if interested. Raconteurs did a really good job, but, I think the Hell version(s) are way better and considering it was 1976ish it has some serious staying power....IMO

Malcolm McLaren was impressed and nick'd the whole vibe/look from Hell and started, well you know what English band....right?

Richard Hell

Raconteurs

And now for something completely different...

A singing friend who also happens to ride bicycles and I have been getting out for social distanced rides -- and there is an old Railroad tunnel in the middle of nowhere on our route -- about a 900 foot of tunnel. Nine seconds of natural reverb is hard to pass up for choral singers. We go to the center and set up the zoom digital recorder with a Dead Cat Cover* and in between the other riders, passing airplanes and crow or two, we get recordings. They are not perfect but they have had an effect on people who are stuck indoors. Here is one of those recordings from what we call The Tunnel Tunes Project. When I can get a Bass and an Alto to join us I'll post an updated version.

Peace.

Crossing the Bar - Soprano and Tenor

Music by C.H.H. Parry words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

*yes Richard - Dead Catz do have a purpose! Keeping the breeze off the mics.
That's beautiful Bill.

Gordon
Been revisiting the first Gomez album lately, from back in1998. So great, a sort of minimalist effort, but to great effect. These guys made this almost acoustic record, very rhythmic, almost a bit of a "groove thing" going on at times. The band was awarded the Mercury Music Prize for this debut release, called Bring It On. One positive review said that they "cover a lot of ground, convincingly" on the debut record. There's a lot of great tonality & rhythm and a solid, thoughtful vibe here. To my ears they do some pretty simplistic things under a new light (well new in 1998 anyway) and, to this day, however many times later- it makes for great listening.

Rie's Wagon s is probably the most "electric" of all the cuts on the record. Certainly the most scathing guitar track. This whole record might be best in a pair of really nice headphones. It'd be a great way to catch all the nuance.

WIKI: Bring It On
