-68 Spitfire centre stand and rear shocks - 05/17/19 2:49 pm

Hi, I have a problem getting the bike on the centre stand without help. I'm not exactly Swartsenegger but this was not a problem in the "old days" smile I bought this bike about a year ago and has spent the winter and some money to make it as original as possible. The rear wheel sits a bit more than 2 inches off firm ground when on the centre stand. There are Hagon shocks at the rear and what I'm thinking now is that maybe they are shorter than the original ones?
And I would like to replace the rear shocks with original looking ones with the chromed upper shrouds. Anybody who has a source where I can get a pair?

Best regards Gunnar

Try hagons

Check your length against the book .

+1 for Hagon. BCS (site sponsor) can build them to your specs.

Regarding the side stand, I've always had good luck with the "press down / pull up" method, meaning you step down on the side stand lever rather than using your foot as a stop.. The downward pressure rotates the lever (and side stand) while you lift up on the bike (usually with a hand under the seat). The motion is lifting the bike up, not rocking it backwards.

I hope that makes sense.

The correct shock length is 340mm between centres (or 13.4”) if your using low profile tyres this will make it all the worse. Normal tyres and these things are a dream to go on the stand with the lug, even with the lug removed they are not too bad still.

NJB ultimates knock the hagons into a cocked hat for less money than hagons standard pair, each set built to rider weight etc, only downside is they don’t look quite stock. The top chrome shrouds were only bottom covers but fitted upside down, you could always buy a pair with exposed springs and buy the covers separately. You would need a tool to make this an easy job but can be done with two people without, providing one has the grip of a gorilla.

Thanks for the replys. The bike had modern low profile tyres when I got it but I changed to 4.00x18 K70 at the rear and 3.25x19 Avon Speedmaster front hoping that would help. I will measure the length of the shocks tomorrow.
Again, thanks for the feedback.

The speed masters are fairly low profile, the 3.25-19 K70 at the front would have been a better tyre. Or those sizes in Avon road riders. If your shocks are 12.9” then you have the wrong ones

Hi Allan, I could not make up my mind regarding the front tyre, K70 was an option but I ended up with speedmaster.
If the lenght of the shocks is correct I will order a K70 and see what happens.
Also the gap between the front mudguard and the tyre is too big to my liking so a higher profile K70 could make me satisfied :-)

The K70 will definitely help fill that gap. I bent the lower stays a little further on my 68’, it also helped to give more clearance around the rear brake arm (on the front brake) then with a bit of fiddling I managed to get the mudguard closer to the tyre. When I had the K70 fitted it looked the part as it was a real close fit.

The shocks measure approx 325 mm bolt centre to centre so they are a bit shorter than they should be.
Have ordered K70 front tyre and I have had a look at the NJB website.
But I will try the K70 first, it should help a little, and it is the "offroad" look of the front mudguard that pisses me off the most :-)

Do you have the shorter 4 tab front mudguard also (with the loop coming over for the front brace?)

Hi Allan, yes 4 tab mudguard.
I bought a Spitfire brand new in - 68 and I have a picture from back in the day showing how the front mudguard is supposed to look like. But I have a problem figuring out how to post a picture on this forum.

Hello Alan, K70 installed at front and I ended up with Girling replica shocks.
So now I can get the bike on the centre stand witout help.
Elongated the holes in the tab for the fork leg stays and bent the rear stays a bit more, so now the front mudguard "off road" look is gone and I'm happy.
